That bass must be playing itself. No one can just wave their hands around and make those unbelievable rhythms, melodies, and pure funk grooves. I never saw his right hand hit any strings. Some magician stuff right there. Imagine if he actually touched the guitar...
I wanted to correct you by saying it's "in the world", but then I realized, even though that's the correct way to say it, we're not "in" the world, but "on" it after all.
JD Blair is his name. I once saw the Wooten family band in a small club in Boston and apparently he also manned the drums for Shania Twain back in the day. During that show he hilariously admitted that the view from the back was much more appealing on her tour.
@@jonnya3425 for what it's worth, you're correct that JD Blair was the drummer on this track originally, but on this performance it's Roanoke-based drummer Kelly Gravely. You can hear Victor call his name out at 10:42
The drummer is my friend Kelly gravely from Roanoke Va I’m a bass player and I’ve jammed with Kelly in a few bands when I came here from Chicago great guy great player Victor is his cousin fact one day he’ll introduce me to him can’t wait for that day.
That's one thing I admire about him. In every video of him his hands move way to less for the amount of sounds coming from that bass. Every movement he does is needed, no nonsense fiddling around in there.
Here's perfect proof that massively thick strings and 5 / 6 string aren't really necessary . Victor uses a 4 string with a 40 - 95 gauge set . Yet he gets amazing tone . If you know how utilize the fretboard a 4 string is more than enough .
the thin strings really help ... im trying to get mine down to that clearance which looks like an eyelash thick ...buzzing ... straighten neck ..level frets ...still buzzing ..sometimes the buzzing is just the strings rattling as they are too floppy so im going up a little to 40-105 ... fingers crossed but that means thicker strings ...grrr also dunno bout you but when i was buying my bass the assistant was surprised at the lightness of my right hand technique which speaks volumes to the anchor chain fans also also ..i have a few 5 strings and a 6 string TRB ...sometimes you need an actual proper bass with the correct 4 strings ...but im leaning towards getting a more technically oriented on as i currently play an american elite jazz which is wonderful but im wondering if i can get the action lower by shimming the neck a teeny bit and therein lies the problem ... vics bass has his expertise in the set up and cost twice what mine did ...that and its him playing it lol
I love the way he names his songs. The title is almost speaking directly to the player trying to learn the tune. I managed to learn the different parts quite quickly (they are pretty easy to remember) but fitting them all inside of a groove AND while playing percussion had me telling myself "you cant hold no groove" P.s. What Victor is doing before he starts playing, with his foot gently tapping on the strings is getting in the pocket, as the lyrics suggest: "you can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket". I found that finding the groove before playing helps while learning and beyond
Like watching Van Gogh paint. When you share your passion, you give to everyone. Allow the gifts of others to be a source of joy for yourself & you will feel closer to your fellow man.
If Tommy Emmanuel and Jaco had a love child…. A complete mastery of the instrument blended with making it not only a rhythm source, but the lead element of the piece of music.
What I like is how unique, and original Victor Wooten's approach to the Electric Bass is, and Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, James Jamerson, Abraham Laboriel, Chuck Rainey, Jaco Pastorius, Verdine White, Ron Carter: among many others, while playing the same instrument, each one has a distinct signature sound.
If only I could have had Victor play with Michael Hedges. Individually, they play parts of at least 4 other persons, simultaneously. I was so fortunate to see Michael Hedges perform at MTSU back in the 90s when I lived in Nashville. I also got to see VW perform with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones at the 1998 Montreal Jazz Festival. The Wooten Bros played out in Nashville....I would think/hooe they still do. Do whatever you can to catch any performance of them!
He’s got the funk and he has the feel to his playing. You can’t find much people like that now a days. He’s crazy! I love his playing so much and on top of his personality you can’t get a better bassist than him.
He's NOT a bass player! He's... a ... Victor player! He IS the instrument! Hard to explain how I see him... Another level? No another world, or dimension... But he's more than a bass player. He doesn't need other instruments on the stage to make things happen. Only bass and drum! He sometimes plays all by himself. Alone! People go see him live , just himself and a bass guitar! And even without an instrument! Just when he speaks, he's somehow amazing. Also... he's a brilliant, generous teacher, a respected speaker, a down to earth, nice human being, Our planer desperately needs more people like him... more than ever!
Nice how he's deal out on this cut all the extra bases dude got it going on with Larry Graham's voice thanks Victor knows what time it was with Larry thanks yup I am a old head that came up with Larry
This guy aways have something for you even as this was older it still sounds good as I am checking this out Dec 19th about 2.30 am in the morning 2023 thanks
I could be wrong but I seem to recall the drummer had not heard the song before and was literally just jamming along and picking up the musical cues Victor was giving him
Hey UA-cam, when it's a video on holding the grove, interrupting the grove with your ads every two minutes is a sin, in my opinion.
😂
UA-cam is unusable without premium, which is sad.

90's Wooten is definitely the best Wooten, the Bass Days 1998 were awesome
2001 is amazing
when someone tell me "bass is boring" or "bass is easier than guitar" i simply show them this video ;)
😅 only mortals think bass is boring.
@@DOCTORBAZZ so you mean that we are Immortal? Wow :))

Just discovered Victor Wooten today... life changing
Yeah after watching this I realized that I really cannot hold a groove
but it's a double negative. you can hold every groove.
I guess you ain't got no pocket then
Not without deep pockets backing you
We all strive to be what victor Wooten is, great bass player, humble, and a groove god
Look at the monkey playing for a snack

I wasn't expecting to learn that the drummer is a Roanoke local! I've lived there for over a decade--nice to hear (no pun intended)!

Victor looks like the kind of dude that gets the party started. I love his whole vibe.

Yeah… he seemed to do alright on 4, now didn’t he?
No one ever said you needed more than that, but you gotta love that low B
Not necessary for what Victor does. Is necessary in other circumstances. John Myung wouldn't be able to do most of his bass lines on a 4 string.
I don’t know why, but I LOVE that looping vocal section in the middle.
At 2:11 when you realize he's not using a loop pedal and is playing both parts at once... it's crazy.
