    I looked in my greenhouse for my veitchiana but couldn't see it, so I checked my plant list. To my surprise not only do I not have it, in fact I've never grown it! This is an oversight I need to rectify next year, when your experiment will undoubtedly come in very useful.

      They are very popular amongst growers however they can be very temperamental when it comes to temperature variations. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Thanks Mick that’s an interesting experiment. I grow my Veitchiana in small bark sphagnum and perlite. Last re pot I put it in a clay pot to try and keep it cooler. The roots are now attached to the inside of the pot and are extensive but alas no flowers this year so not sure what is going on with it. The plant looks healthy enough and has leaf growth so maybe has to do with temperature variations this year. Your plants always look so lovely and healthy. Will look forward to seeing the results.

      Thanks Angela I personally think the weather this year may have had an impact on blooms because of daily variations in temperatures. Yes the clay pot is another good idea but my friend who gave them extra light had a splendid display, so we are all learning.

      @@MicksMasdevalliaorchids I would really give the Massies a try if only I could find plants of it here in Jamaica. Lol. I presently grow a wide variety of Vandaceous orchids, the vanda teretes, arandas, mokaras etc. I also have dendrobiums of many kinds, oncidiums, cymbidiums, epidendrums and a small amount of cattleya. I have been sharing some of them on my channel. I haven't mastered any though, but I'm having fun doing it. (smile)

    This will be a great experiment to follow even though I don't have a Veitchiana. I only have two Massies, one is doing well and in spike but the other has always struggled and we are about to go into our summer so that is going to put more pressure on it. Thanks for doing these videos. I'll check out your Carnivorous plant channel as well, I grow Sundews and Venous fly traps to catch any fungus gnats in my grow space.

    Not Massies but I bought a couple of small Catasetums and most people seem to grow these in spaghnum. Im a classic overwaterer so this set off alarm bells for me. Ive taken to spraying a small stream of water on the spaghnum just around the top edge and allow the spaghnum to move the water around. So far so good, Ive got new growths on both plants.

    Experiments like this are what really advance the hobby! I pot mine in seedling grade Kiwi Bark (like Orchiata but processed differently) and #2 perlite. The amount that we water can alter the results significantly. Not sure how to incorporate that into the experiment.

    Do you have a Masdevallia barlaeana in amongst your collection at all please? I have one of these... Its my only massie but I'm really struggling with it 😢. I believe this is a species so probably not the wisest of first choice as an introduction to them lol but I just can't get it to put down decent roots!
    They're very shallow and so it's wobbly in its pot no matter what I do! If you do have one, could you pleeeeease do a spotlight video on its care and general tips as I'm beginning to despair with it lol. I'm actually experimenting myself now and have just repotted into coco husk as everything else has failed me 😢. It's been soaked and rinsed to get rid of the tannins and salts prior to using but I'm not sure if this will work either!
    I've had it since Feb this year and although I'm getting new growths, leaves look healthy etc, the main roots in the pot just aren't good so unless this one just creeps along without decent roots, I don't know what I'm doing wrong 😢. Any advice would be really appreciated please. Many thanks 😊

      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  3 роки тому +1

      Maxine I do have barlaeana but similar to yours very shallow roots. I have potted it in long fibre sphagnum moss in a clear pot so I can see root growth and it’s currently getting additional day light, the sphagnum moss will draw the roots once established I’ll repot in my preferred mix. Hope this helps a little.

      @@MicksMasdevalliaorchids Thank you Mick. That's great info 😊. I've tried pure moss but for me it just didn't work 😢. I'm thinking perhaps light is something that could be increased for mine though as I've heard they can take more than we think. I'm just really disappointed in the roots with this one as I've had it for 9 months now and it should be in a pot stuffed full of them lol. I'm reluctant to repot the poor thing again so I'll stick with the husk for a few months (we can compare notes as an experiment lol) but will definitely give it more light. Thank you very much for your help 😊. I hope I don't have to come back to say my experiment has killed it 😢. I'd like to report massive new roots lol.

    Brilliant video Mick. I have to say your M. veitchiana divisions are amazing, beautiful healthy sized plants and if they were mine I would not change a thing your doing. But you have set the old brain cogs working again with regard to it being a terrestrial. Mine grow but they do not excel like yours have so the time has now come to do something about it. I will be watching their progress. Are you also going to chart whether they start to go backwards since the change as that will be interesting too. I am interested in the peat moss mix, in as much as I dont know what it is, have you bought peat and chopped sphagnum to go into it. Or have you used the mix that can be used for the carnivorous plants. Last week I ordered a bag of chopped fir bark off EBay ready to use, it is the stuff they use for reptiles etc and needs no washing. I have been on the Orchid database this afternoon and seen that it also likes a mix of chopped fir bark mixed with varying amounts of chopped sphagnum, perlite and charcoal. Last year I bought another new one, not for any particular reason other than it was for a very reasonable price and a good sized plant and it came in a mesh pot with chopped sphagnum and perlite. I, like you, dont like growing them in moss as I get them too wet as well but I made a conscious effort not to let it stay too wet and, I have to say, the roots have grown like weeds in that as well.I do want to try one in the peat moss mix as well if you can let me know the make up of it. A brilliant idea for a video, something different to focus on and lose ourselves in in our greenhouses. Stay safe.

      Lynn I will certainly be showing regular updates on any changes to growth or lack of and really did it to satisfy myself because I’ve never grown it as a terrestrial. I mixed peat moss, perlite, small amount of bark and sphagnum moss to give it ago, however when other growers told me what they use I had to give them ago, to be honest mine only had 3 spikes this year so a pretty poor show. I think we all grow within our comfort zone so now and again (I might be mad) trying new methods might pay off because veitchiana is a true beauty and fairly easy to grow but very temperamental with different temperatures seems to slow down. I suppose the carnivorous plant mix with additional bark, sphagnum and perlite would work just as well, it might even come with perlite already added. After this I might be known as the Nutty Professor 😂 Happy growing and stay safe.

      @@MicksMasdevalliaorchids It will be really good to see what happens with this. I dont understand what the peat moss is, can you explain it for me please. A search of the internet just brings up peat and that is not very easy to get hold of. What were the ingredients for your version of it. I am now going to try the fir bark mix as well just out of curiosity. Like you I had flowers but only ones and twos. Mind you I have never seen a multi flowering veitchiana. I think big is beautiful but that doesn’t mean it is always floriferous. Plus unless you try them all how do you know which is best to use.

    • @MicksMasdevalliaorchids
      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  3 роки тому

      Lynn I mixed it all together, I used Irish peat moss from a garden centre the product name was Forkers, I then added perlite to allow good drainage, some chopped up Sphagnum moss and a small amount of bark and that’s the nearest you’ll get for a terrestrial orchid mix, hope this helps a bit.

    • @MicksMasdevalliaorchids
      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting, I’ve never tried any form of grit but after seeing the results of the five different growing media’s and to which all have bloomed this year I would say yes so long as it’s fast draining and moisture retaining it should be ok.

    • @kenjiro2676
      @kenjiro2676 3 роки тому

      @@MicksMasdevalliaorchids the grit drains very well and the finer coarseness will hold on to moisture, I may try it once I get my hands in a M. veitchiana, are they picky about water? I read they, like the Dracula orchids, like relatively pure water.
