Its actually trying to kill it. It looks like play because it isn't sure about the ball, but the body language of the ears back and the front hooves in a stomping motion is the same thing I saw a moose doing with a dog.
Look up the story of a man who was arrested for driving his riding mower back and forth over his wife. He was locked up for a long time until someone decided to check the blood for DNA, turns out she was killed by a Moose. She went for a walk and a moose stomped her to death.

It would run back to its mother if it was scared. It's pretty obvious that it's all play because it's completely relaxed everytime it looks up at its mom.

Must be nice to have trees in your backyard. Where I live a developer cut them all down. They also got rewarded by the city with an environmental award for developing the land. Now, instead of a tree line in my backyard, I get to watch construction vehicles digging in the dirt and see the houses on the next block over.
@@taekwondotime That's why we bought a house with a stream behind it. The tree line is protected due to it being undevelopable. The same thing happened to my friends parents. Beautiful scenic woods view gone over night for more subdivisions. So sad :(

This is great! Thanks much for sharing, folks! I'm from northern New England(mostly Maine and Vermont)and an outdoorsman so I've come across moose TONS of times. Once when I was at this campground in Maine called Khatadin Iron Works and after setting up camp I was chilling on the tailgate of my Blazer when I felt the whole truck shake and a massive bull moose came right up to me, smelled me for a couple seconds and licked my leg and then loped away. At that same place on my way in(it's a dirt logging road with swamps on both sides)in the same Blazer going prob way too fast I had another moose jump right out in front of me and run in front of the truck and he ran in front of us down the road right in the middle of it like a boss. I have tons of stories like that with moose. They love me for some reason.

A bit of both, maybe...edited to add, a lot of baby animal play (and some adult top) is hunting practice.
Definitely a bit of both. Very cautious and treating the ball as a potential danger, but playing nonetheless
