Not really imo. “Dystopian” is such a buzzword now lmao. Plants, especially trees don’t just do whatever you want. This is just a way to have trees that specifically accentuate a certain area. As long as like a 3rd of the trees aren’t pool noodles covered in bark it’s a non issue. It’s not like this is a new thing, humans have been doing stuff like this since humans started caring about how things look.

Do any of you even read??? These fake trees with real bark are specifically designed to help parasitic plants that grow on real trees in the wild. If you don't like it, then go hate on ALL of gardening and stop eating anything plant-based, because any kind of plant-growing requires strategies like this.
Dystopian my ass. The only thing dystopian around here is the educational level of all these submoronic adults. People like you should submit themselves to the Huntington as a Missing Link exhibit.

It would be worse to have actual rotting logs erected in an exhibit. Rotting logs rot and fall, injuring and killing people. This is a safe way to exhibit epiphytic plants in a busy botanical garden. Plus, cork bark is a renewable resource (and if you're worried about cork bark, one of the top consumers of the material is the film industry, which uses the ground bark as flammable shrapnel in explosions for movies. Now that's wasteful!)

People are missing the point. This is not to take the place of a real tree rather its to make a home for certain plants and making the base look like a real tree in order to blend in. Many real trees would not like plants and moss growing on them. This solves that problem.

It’s a botanical garden… it’s indoors. Trees require a lot of space for roots so botanical gardens usually don’t have many actual trees. It’s just impossible to do that in an indoor space. More trees outside is definitely a good thing but we still have to consider the space they take up you can’t just plant a tree anywhere.

Thats a LOT of plastic (the results are great looking, ofc); surely you could use natural loofahs (presuming they grow nearby enough); would be cheap, solid enough to carry the outside bark etc. and not a pile of plastic.
Also they'll have a more natural shape to them than lining up your various cylinders as well as having the option to "shave" (or cut) down areas as needed, for the look youre aiming for. You could also look into using natural fillers that could mean, essentially, if you slipped (or smashed) out the metal parts (which you could use again), you could compost ALL of the rest of the fake tree, when it eventually breaks (then it can breakdown too).
As far as i know (I'm in Ireland), loofah trees grow quick and well, and although de-seeding can take time and effort, I'd imagine if you were already ensuring a dry interior, and the loofahs are going in dried, then I'd wager you could get away with not being too perfect with your de-seeding, and you wont have to worry about your tree internally sprouting more trees?!
I'd expect a local producer would do a deal with you for wonky etc. loofah sponges, or ones less "processed", at a cheap price, because (if?) you will (partially, for weight if nothing else) de-seed them yourselves etc?!

    • @beeech1080

Recycling plastic is a good thing. It’s actually being used instead of sitting in the dump. But tbh it’s really weird and kinda sad that we want to replicate nature instead of just embracing it.

    • @gillianboate
      @gillianboate 4 місяці тому

Fully agreed that existing plastic should be recycled, but unless they're scouting around swimming pools daily looking for discarded pool noodles, my guess is they're buying the noodles new.
I'd expect that would be using way more resources than it takes to grow loofahs!
I re-listened to the video there to check, and they dont mention that the pool noodles they use are recycled, and their visable labels suggests to me they're brand new, bought to make the plastic trees (even if the manufacturer uses some recycled materials, it still seems unnecessary here) :(
Also agree that real trees are the way to go, but I can understand how it's possible (and necessary given they're pretty immovable) for applications like film making, that fake (light enough to be safely transported) trees could have a purpose; I just think they could, and should, make them out of compostable materials.
I would say they could definitely make a bamboo frame as light, and as strong, as the thin wires they use now. They could pack it with loofahs instead of pool noodles (which cut so easily they could use those instead of the filler too), and then use their bark(already bidegradeable) and coconut husk fibres (same), with a plant based resin, to seal and glue it all together, so it will look as seamless as the result they are getting now; but that way it doesn't have to be destined for a landfill when it eventually breaks beyond repair etc.
Another reply that I can't seem to see anymore said this:
      Maddie B.
Natural loofahs decay and rot over time and would not be secure. This will be a moist environment long term. This is also being created as a hygienic and safe platform for orchids and other aerial plants to anchor on to be seen better.
I'm not sure why this person thinks loofahs are moist enough to rot any faster than the coconut husk and regular bark they already use; a quick google tells me that loofahs last as long, if not longer, than both of those things, anyway!
And I'd expect loofahs are not unhygienic (definitely not more than bark) but also, they'd all be sealed inside the tree like the noodles are, anyway!
Also also, there are natural materials available which are hygroscopic, so can absorb moisture to prolong the life of the tree. They could literally set the tree trunk over a tub of salt, and it would have an internal humidifier that would work for the whole tree as I'd say the loofahs would allow internal circulation better than pool noodles would!
I would LOVE to see a video like "how we make an all -natural fake tree" rather than "here's how we use loads of plastic to make this natural looking tree" :(
