The Coolest Truck Battery Upgrade You Never Knew About! (Bolt In Supercapacitor!)

  • Sometimes you come across crazy ideas that make you scratch your head... sometimes they are just too weird to work and other times they DO work and really well at that. This is one of those times. I have no idea why diesel trucks especially don't come with this combination from the factory already. My 2007 Duramax LBZ was always slow to crank relative to a normal gas powered truck...especially when it was really cold sometimes it sounds like it wont even spin over... but not anymore!

      Completely agree- would love to see this configuration from the factory. This technology definitely seems to have an advantage over a conventional battery - especially for those of us in colder climates that deal with the sluggish startups after sitting overnight in the single digits. Love the content and the way you guys deliver it, thanks for sharing what you guys do!

    This is something that never crossed my mind, but makes a lot of sense looking at it now. A capacitor (or bank of capacitors) suits the application better than a battery- seeing as a capacitor has a much better ability to discharge.. and that characteristic is already being used on a ton of equipment from board level stuff all the way up to capacitor start compressors and fans.

  • @iknklst
    @iknklst 2 роки тому +22

    The best part of using a capacitor to start, especially starting any larger motor is that you don;t put the strain of both amperage and voltage draw on your regular batteries. If you maintain your charging system they will last significantly longer.
    When you're replacing four Group 31 batteries every fifth year instead of every third year in a commercial vehicle you're saving a lot of money,
    The Newell would benefit from that upgrade.

    Pretty cool. I added an aux battery (Optima) to my '15 Silverado 1500 5.3 with a Cole Hersee 48530 isolation solenoid so I could run the main power to several loads separately like a subwoofer and inverter. It also parallels the batteries in case the main is discharged through a switch. The truck charges the main first, and then will parallel charge the aux. When the truck is shut down, will automatically isolate the two. This looks great for having some extra cranking amps for the diesel.

The issue I'm having is the heated seats turn off after 30 seconds, if I push the brake pedal the AWD light on the switch flickers and it acts weird. It does have the adjustable pedals. I've been using a d3400 and an sb500 for 3 years + in my stereo car, The Cap Will Loose voltage over time if you don't run the vehicle or keep a tender on it. its slow but it happens. if you don't have the two isolated from one another it will drag down the battery voltage, eventually harming your float voltage. FYI if you did not already know. Also if memory serves me, that cap can dump up to 10K amps, and that d3400 is 1000cca and 3300 max

    I just got this video today and I just want to say I see you noticed how much faster your vehicle starts using a capacitive battery than a lead acid or AGM. You may now already know that capacitors have a lower internal resistance than lead acid. Lower internal resistance means current moves much freely and faster with a punch. Capacitors can charge just as fast but to be on the safe side keep using the provided led lamp, this slows down the charge to a safe rate of charge. I'm new to your channel and I support you for trying new ideas. As for car/truck audio, bass notes requires large amounts of power to be delivered fast(capacitors can do just that).

    • @Stapleton42
      @Stapleton42  10 місяців тому

      My truck did start a tick faster. It is also very very good at jumpstarting other vehicles. I paired it with a power master 225 alternator and it is a beast. Only issue is occasionally the terminals would wiggle a bit loose and crank slightly slower.. but I have fixed that

    • @craigboedeker4368

      with the capacitors do you have to worry about unhooking the capacitor (battery), will it shock you like a traditional capacitor or can you just unhook your battery cables and be fine?@@Stapleton42

    • @zak3033
      @zak3033 8 місяців тому +1

      @@Scott_Buchanan so from what I know the Duramax and Allison bolt right onto the Suburban 2500 frames of the equivalent generations. The rear axles are smaller on the suburbans so most people swap in the donor truck rear axle and front diffs as well. And like most swaps the tedious part is getting all of the necessary wiring and computers swapped into the suburban which includes the gauge cluster and 4x4 controls if you swap to the truck transfer case (no autotrac). All of the DIY guys mention having to do a body lift but I see no mention of that when I actually read through the two professional shops’ postings. I think it is doable without the body lift unless you want the full HD front body pieces and core support. I’ve found quite a few DIY forum posts if you want to do it yourself or Duraburb and Duramax Specialties are two shops that do the conversions full time. Hope this helps!

    Did your truck originally come with an AMG battery? I would like to get a AMG battery but I know you can’t put an AMG battery underneath the hood if you have a older car or if your car doesn’t already come with one.

      I’m not sure. You should have a real battery with the capacitor in a street driven application

    I'm super intrigued! What are the part numbers ? I went on their site and see the battery, but not the capacitor setup ?
    I guess I should call them.

    I've heard of the new solid state batteries which will eventually replace lithium ones. Perhaps this is what they were talking about using super capacitors to replace any lead core battery. By the way, wishing Logan and you a very Merry Christmas. Cheers!

    also do a thing called the big 3 0 gauge wire from batt ground to frame, batt ground to body of car, and batt ground to engine and delete the old grounds xs power batts are amazing!!! i use all that for stereo systems and such you can also upgrade from pos batt to alternator for better charging aswell!

    That was pretty interesting, guess I know what I'll do for batteries whenever I decide to buy a diesel truck. Shoot, I might just buy an XS Power battery for my Durango. The Rolls definitely need a set of white letter KO2's on it, maybe a roof basket and some custom tube bumpers too lol.

    Dammit i keep not getting notifications from ya guys then come across your vids 6 days after the fact. I have the same truck but a gasser and i dig how you painted the gmc and chrome around the grill. And that spacer between the bumber and grill. Looks so much better to me. Bout to go to the paint store now. What did you use? Plastidip?

    Is there a way to use a capacitor as the only battery? Or it has to be a dual battery set up? Pretty cool how fast it turns it over.

    • @javaman2883
      @javaman2883 Рік тому

      The problem with that is the capacitors don't have the capacity to run those always on loads in the car, the car computer goes into sleep mode not off completely, security system is still on, etc. So if you leave your car parked for a week, then you can't start it.
