"DANG!" I knew Fred was going to lay down some industry inside info. So the Liberty copies are the best sounding versions of the old Blue Note pressings. That's helpful info since those copies are reasonably easy to find and usually affordable. "Fingers crossed for PT. 3" 👽🖖"Na-nu"
Great interviews. Loving it. I collect Blue Note records, been collecting for about 10--15 years. It might sound crazy, but I was first drawn to collecting Blue Note records because of the sleeves, not the music! I'm a graphic designer, and always admired the Reid Miles' sleeve designs. Through buying for design sakes, I ended up falling in love with the music! What I have noticed, is that there is a lot of snobbery among Blue Note collectors. It's kind of disheartening. But it happens I guess, in whatever fad, like cycling today. My god the cycling snobbery is outrageous. lol

Another good one. Recently finish reading biography on Ellington by Terry Teachout. My take away was Ellington was complicated guy who was misunderstood. Like the a Libertys. Godfather of Jazz?
I agree with everything he says.... The difference between pressings is nonsense and superficial, the musicians, pictures, and the music is what matters... Its all hype and publicity selling this 1st pressing hype... i challenge any audiophile to discern blindfolded the dif between 1 2nd thrd pressings.... As for Ellington, I think part of it is an age thing.... I do think Ellington is very modern , and invents modernity.... But the fact that most of his work predates the LP era, there are no collectible 1st pressings, and classic albums from the 30s 40 n early 50s, that makes much of his werk, collated and less desirable to collectors... Great stuff Ken!!! You sound great , nice series!!! The Music is what matters.... Cheers!!!

Every pressing sounds different, every cartridge, amp, turntable and pair of speakers sound different. Everything you place your amp or turntable on will change its sound. Stereo Review's Julian Hirsh in the 50s believed everything is the same, all pressings, all gear. All he cared about were measurements. Life is not black and white. Life and music and yes pressings have different colors, shadings, just as sunlight is different on the east coast to the wast cost. Julian Hirsh is dead, his magazine is dead, and his theories on the slagheap of history where they belong.

Great interviews, Ken. I know you likely didn't get a chance to ask Fred, but I'd be interested in what he thinks about stereo vs mono Blue Notes-especially the mono Liberty & UA re-issues. Also, I know Fred interviewed Rudy when compiling the book (I think the punch images in the book were taken during his visit)-man, I'd love to hear some of those stories!
Bass Kulcha Fred doesn’t really address sound quality, that’s not really his thing. I wasn’t aware that he had interviewed Rudy! Maybe I’ll do a follow up interview at some point.

He told me once that he felt the only clear SQ difference was between stereo and mono pressings, but it was in passing and I wish I'd followed up to make sure I understood correctly. (I was surprised because I know he generally doesn't have a dog in that fight...)
Disney Pixar have unveiled the first trailer for their new animated movie ‘Soul’, which tells the story of Joe Gardner, a middle-school band teacher whose true passion is playing jazz, and who sets out on a journey to follow his dreams. The movie is set in the modern day jazz clubs of New York City starring Jamie Foxx as the lead along with Tina Fey and Questlove from the band The Roots. The film score is being put together by British producer Atticus Ross with jazz contributions from the Grammy-nominated New Orleans pianist Jon Batiste. *Dec. 14, 1959, is to the day the 60th anniversary of "Time Out"* "Time Out" wasn't 39-year-old Brubeck's first album nor was he an unknown at the time of its release. After a handful of moderately successful releases throughout the first half of the decade, mostly targeted toward college students. Uncomfortable with his fame, Brubeck felt he was only receiving the adoration due to his skin color. His appearance -- that of a middle-class, well-groomed white male -- provided him with a wider appeal to the predominantly white mainstream than leading African American jazz artists like Miles Davis or Duke Ellington. Brubeck refused to use race as a safety net, however; he never stopped working with both white and black musicians for the duration of his career, despite industry pushback. For me, Mr. Brubeck made some groundbreaking albums and some more to the pop side of Jazz and they are less my taste in Jazz. I will leave a short post about the album tomorrow Dec.14, 2019. I have a copy of the album also his pop Jazz album "Gone with the Wind" and a best-of album I am not collecting all Dave's music.
Great, but what does that have to do with the video? Based on the store sales and current reissues, Brubeck is nowhere near the hot commodity of Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Mingus, and frankly, he' doesn't deserve to be.

Vinyl formulation doesnt change the sound and as long as the stampers are the same the label design doesnt matter.

Very true about vinyl composition. My 1950-1960 LP's are thick and stiff. The 1970-1990 LP's are thin and flexible.
I was looking for someone to mention my favorites BN albums - the HERBIE NICHOLS piano trios. Great composer. still revered years after his death.
