Cross-tabulation (CROSSTAB) of Multiple Response Findings in SPSS

  • One survey strategy is to give survey takers a list of items and ask them to identify their “most important” response, which can have only one answer. Then we follow up with a question that presents them with the same list, but this time asks them to “check all that apply”. But using this powerful strategy can create problems for us later. Some people may check one response, or none, or all of the responses. We want to plan ahead for how to treat these multiple response items in SPSS.
    We learn how to create a response set that we can cross tabulate with another (yes or no) item. We illustrate the concept using a survey from the fictitious Passagassawakeag River Watershed Alliance, as they ask respondents about their most important use of a river, then ask a “check all that apply” question.
