Lilo & Stitch casting controversy is NOT comparable to The Little Mermaid

  • I could go on for even longer, but this breaks down why the casting for Nani in the live-action Lilo & Stitch is putrid & the casting for Ariel in the live-action Little Mermaid is perfection...& anybody who thinks that's a double standard truly needs to seek cultural context or therapy.

It really bothered me when they casted Nani because even in lilo and stitch there’s deleted scenes that dealt with the struggle of indigenous Hawaiians and the tourist that go and treat them like an attraction. That’s the backstory to why Lilo takes pictures of the tourists. Because she’s processing as a little girl the way that they treat he given she’s a native Hawaiian with indigenous roots. To recast Nani as someone without that nuanced background basically erases the whole point of the story especially when her being indigenous is partially a reason why social services is so on top of her too! Keep in mind she was already having a hard time with them BEFORE stitch even showed up.
Also I love Halle I’ve always loved her ethereal voice ever since I came across her and Chloe’s cover of pretty hurts by Beyoncé.

The girl who was casted as Nani is in fact native Hawaiian sistah. Who the heck you? You one Hawaiian braddah? Cuz let me tell you this straight sistah mary, Hawaiians come in choke frickin shades cuz. I'm tan, I look Hawaiian because of my dad. But theirs something haoles don't understand is that we all hella mixed. My brothers are a perfect mix of Japanese and Hawaiian yet look white to haoles and popolo's. And I'm mistaken as Hispanic or Egyptian all the time in the mainland bc no one knows what Hawaiians really look like. The Nani actress is a beautiful example of our mixed culture in Hawai'i. If people want representation, heres your true representation. A mixed Hawaiian

Even if she comes from Hawaii that doesn't make her Polynesian. Giving the role of Nani to someone who was only born into Hawaii is ignoring the problems many indigenous Hawaiians face and completely ignores Nani and Lilo's situation as outcasts in their own land by rich white tourists.

If you’re born somewhere, that makes you a native, so I don’t know why people keep trying to act like you have to be an ethnic group to be a part of a land or culture or a place but you don’t.
The tourist wasn’t even part of a plot so I don’t know where you keep injecting real life issues into the story, but that wasn’t a part of it. I saw the deleted scene, but I don’t know who actually goes to Hawaii in the western world and does that. 😂
Maybe somebody from China who’s never stepped outside the country or seen another ethnicity other than her own 😂😂😂
But nobody in the western world does that😂😂😂
We’re well-versed in diversity here and if they do,it’s a very very very very small group of people.
But they have to cast the Polynesian woman because the characters are Polynesian you can’t just cast the black girl or white girl or a Spanic girl in those rolls
Kind of like a certain little mermaid character…hmmmmmmmmm

As a black woman, Nani was such an important character to me. Tiana was not created until 2009, so many black girls had to live through Nani and Jasmine when it came to looks. I loved Lilo and Stitch and I always thought Nani was so pretty. Not only was she not white washed, but she also had a curvy body and a big nose with full lips. You stated everything that I had been thinking in this video. Ariel was a fictional character and historically white people have not been ignored or left out of media due to their race.

I'm sorry but I don't get your point. I didn't like Ariel and I don't like Nani either. They should look like the originals. Period. Us whites from other parts of the world who had nothing to do with slavery shouldn't put up with this guilt you people try to put into everyone who isn't your skin color just so you can have a special treatment. Whites should stay white and blacks should stay black, I really don't think I'm asking something that frivolous.

@@tick_tack you are a classic r@cist with wh1te fragility. this whole "it was not me it was my ancestors" argument is BS. What your ancestors did effected blk people for CENTURIES and there are still racist practices being done all over the world.
Secondly, The Little Mermaid is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. Ariel's race did not matter to the plot and, since you seem very dim witted, MERMAIDS DONT EXIST. It does not matter what race places a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. Also, Ariel was not white in the original story. The littel mermaid is an ancient story that has been retold by many different cultures. Its the same thing with Cinderella. The original Cinderella story was written in Egypt and they are NOT wh!te.
Nobody wants special treatment. "You people" are just mad that you no longer are getting the "special treatment" that you think you deserve. Everyone deserves to be represented. This is nothing new. Brandy played Cinderella in the 90s and there was The Wiz in the 70s which was has an entire black cast. Yt people have not been ignored in cinema and have not been held back from roles like blk people have.
Anybody that uses the term "you people" is a textbook r@c1st. It's not my problem that you dont like blk people. Halle did amazing as Ariel and you cant see past her skin color. Emma Watson was trash as Belle even though they were the same race.

To answer you question in the end:
Tbh, for Nani's casting - I didn't before I watched this video, now I do. Seeing that they casted an actual native Hawaiian for Lilo (if I remember it correctly), why can't they find one for Nani? For sure, they will work on another storyline to counter their decision for having her for the role like Disney always does.
For Ariel, I'm already one-hundred percent behind even before they started filming the movie. Halle has all of the qualities that Ariel possess and her skin tone shouldn't even matter when the original story doesn't even have a specific race nor place where it happened so that's where a lot of things could change as long as they keep the already existing storyline. They did with "The Little Mermaid", so what are they even complaining about?
At this point, I do wish Disney could just NOT do any remakes for the meantime and focus on other projects. It is sad to see that new stories aren't getting the love they deserve.
People tell Disney to focus on new projects but when they do, they don't even bother checking so where's the common sense? Left the roof. Kinda annoying, tbh.

Seems like people think being born in Hawaii is the same as being native Hawaiian, which just shows how ignorant people can be. The only reason David got recasted was because the original actor got into some controversies. Unless that actress has controversies that Disney can't ignore, Disney won't kick her out of the project just because she is born in Hawaii (even though she is not native Hawaiian). Honestly, seems like the only way for nani to get recasted is for that actress to leave the role willingly.

The filmmakers of Lilo and Stitch (Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois) sought out for a less "ideal" representation of women in the original film. Lilo and Nani are deliberately not like Ariel or Pocahontas, because not all women look like that, and studies suggested that this was affecting many girls' perception of their own bodies. The fact that the live action is skipping this part is truly disappointing to me, because this actress playing Nani is very much canonically pretty. Disney should not come and say it's because they want to avoid stereotyping hawaiian people, because wide-nosed and bottom-heavy women do exist.

As someone mixed myself I agree. If they're biracial, but they actually look like the character then fine. However, if they don't look like the character they shouldn't be cast and mixed people shouldn't be the ONLY minority representation that we see. That's basically just as bad as when light skinned monoracials would constantly be cast over those who were darker. And it's also hypocritical that when Disney casts people who are half white as Jasmine, Nani, ect. it's deemed as perfectly fine. However, when a minority or even someone biracial ( hence the Rachel Ziegler situation) plays a white character, it's an issue

One more thing I would like to add:
The only way that “colourblind casting” can work is with characters whose ethnicity are not a major part of their story. The Little Mermaid is a perfect example of this. This does not work with Nani’s casting because a) her ethnicity IS important to the story and b) as you mentioned, colourism and ambiguity is rampant in Hollywood, especially for WoC. Dark skinned folks deserve to see themselves on screen, and casting needs to be done with that in mind, even if it is meant to be colourblind.

This is the first time I’ve seen the cast for Lilo and stitch. I have to say it’s ridiculous. I’m a dark skinned American woman and I have to say, representation means a lot. Growing up, I’ve always seen white characters only. In commercials, my dolls, movies, and music videos. It’s not a good feeling when you conform to what people tell you is acceptable. You can hurt yourself and resent one’s self when you try to be something that is against your nature. Halle played a fictional character that happened to be presented a red headed white skinned female. Halle didn’t have to conform or be cast as anything other. Nani on the other hand, is a dark skinned Polynesian young adult. It matters because that is representation on the culture there in Hawaii. I wish people would stop being so stupid and selfish when representation needs to be for EVERYONE. It does matter!

That’s a BS excuse to hide your hypocrisy. You’ve got no problem with Ariel race swapping because it fits your agenda. She’s not real! She’s a mermaid. Well, I hate to break it to you but Nani isn’t real either. She lives on a version of the Hawaiian islands inhabited by aliens. She is a fictional character, just like Ariel.
The Little Mermaid character was created by Hans Christian Anderson. She was most likely from Denmark in the late 1700s or early 1800’s. She had red hair and pale skin. That makes sense, if we’re staying true to geographical skin tones. In no way would she have been black. Disney only chose a black character to fit an agenda, not because Halle was the most qualified.
How the hell can you claim that black people aren’t represented in media? Turn on any commercial, it’s a light skinned black family selling a product. Black people are represented in every facet of media. “We need more representation” doesn’t fly anymore.
Oh, by the way. I’m black. I just don’t need you to feel sorry for me because of my skin color. I also don’t believe that it has caused any hardships for me because It’s 2023 and I live in the US. Stop pretending like you’re living through the civil rights movement. It’s tired and you need to stop feeling like every character has to have the same skin shade as you.

While I disagree with Nani's casting (no shade to biracial actors, as a multiracial person myself; I'd like more rep for us!), the argument that Halle playing Ariel is fine because Ariel was a fictional race holds no water, as well as being hypocritical; the OG Ariel is obviously white in a European setting, and her remake version is black in a Caribbean setting, which to my understanding was due to Sebastian's accent as well as wanting more diversity. Yet they didn't involve Gabriella, Ariel's deaf friend from the TV show. And we all know that if the OG Ariel was a woman of color, none of us would be happy with her being played by a white actress with the excuse of "she's a fictional race, anyway."
Honestly, I'd have rathered we got an original "Little Mermaid" story set in the Caribbean: new story, new music, and all new characters unrelated to the OG Disney film. Though I imagine Disney didn't wanna put forth the effort to market a new project, especially when many would mistake it for an adaptation of the 1989 film. I really wish that POC got more original stories or that we adapted lesser-known POC stories rather than companies racebending white stories and letting the actors take the heat for it.

White and light skin people play black characters all the time. Not only that but Hollywood also greatly refuse to put a black man and a black woman together without any sort of shade, toxicity and struggle love yet they're always ready to do a high quality film about a white man and a black man's gay relationship or a white woman and a black woman's love.
We have begged over the years without success.
So they won't put black men and women in good love,
They won't make new og stories for blacks,
They always cast light skin as black characters,
Yet black people around the world pay their hard earned money to go sit down and watch white people and light skinned people movie everytime.. adding their money to Hollywood's wealth. Halle is not even dark skin. She is super light skin. It's a whole rat race.
Imagine being black and watching whites complain.

@@reallyreal7630 I like to think that nowadays you see more opportunities being made for dark-skinned actors, though a lot of the time it may be for a show particularly angled towards a black audience. It's interesting, since this (similar to color preference for white films) also predetermines what roles you'll get based on your features.

As a black man, I personally disagree with some of the things you said.
You claim Ariel's race doesn't matter since mermaids are fictional creatures, and race is never mentioned. By that logic, then Avatar the Last Airbender could also be race swapped since it takes place fictional planet with cultural influences from East Asian and Native American cultures, and race is never mentioned. Yes the original characters are portrayed as looking asian or Inuit, but it doesn't influence the plot ever. The little mermaid also probably has white cultural elements, that we don't notice since as you said, it's considered default. There are rumors Hercules might also be race swapped, in that case that is not justified since the movie is clearly about Greek culture and mythology, and would be just as bad as white washing a black character. Hollywood also strangely has a history of casting people of WASP or Northern European descent like English, Germans, Scandinavians or lightskin nordic looking mediterraneans to play medditeranians like Greeks or Romans and they historically depicted actual mediterranean whites like Italians with darker skin, less Eurocentric (Anglocentric) features and as criminals. Hercules should be played by a mediterranean actor. And if race doesn't matter to Ariel like for other poc, then why does it make good representation if her race doesn't matter?
You also said, if it was all equal, then neither Ariel or Nani's race or color would matter, I disagree. Although there are some people that use logic and science about Mermaid's skin color and the source material as well as actually being racist, I think most of the hate is as you said because people aren't used to seeing a traditionally white character as black, but this applies to any character's appearance regardless of race. For example, when the first trailer for Sonic dropped, and people saw his design, everyone similarly hated his design change forcing Sony to change it. Sonic doesn't even have a race, and his appearance defiantly doesn't matter as long as he's a hedgehog. Chris Pratt voicing Mario and Garfield also received some hate. People just hate when characters they know have their appearance or voice changed. And Star Wars fans are known for complaining every time a character or alien species doesn't look enough like their animated counterpart in live action, ex: The Grand Inquisitor, Cad Bane, Ashoka, the Pykes. Even in a perfect world without racism, changing appearances will always anger people. For Ariel, they're not using the source for their idea of what she should look like, it's nostalgia. If Ariel was made blond, there would be just as much hate, if not more since they're removing representation from gingers while keeping her white. It's also not just white people hating Ariel, I see lots of Black Men like Tristan Tate making videos against this as well, usually it's black women that support this decision more.
As for other instances not getting as much hate, smaller characters, lesser known characters or if they look like the original get less controversy, regardless of who's being swapped. Johnny Depp as Tonto, Robert Downy Jr as Kirk, and Jake Gyllenhaal as the Prince received just as much, if not more controversy than Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Jamie Fox as Electro. The last 3 were all originally white but made black, but received less controversy than Halle Bailey as Ariel for those reasons. While the first 3 defiantly did receive controversy, but not as much as they would if they were bigger or looked different, like Avatar the Last Airbender.
I'd also like to point out how Ariel might be representing redheads. I've heard others debunk this by claiming redheads aren't as oppressed as poc and it isn't as important for representation. Ordinarily I would agree with them, but if you look at the characters that get race swapped, it seems to be a pattern to swap redheads with black people despite being a small percent of the white population. Redheads defiantly also are bullied and discriminated against by other white people, so it seems strange to pick them to race swap. As much white washing and colorism there is in Hollywood, there also seems to be a clear hate and erasure of redheads as well.
I also, as a black man disagree with your ending statement that colorblind casting is good for equality, and how you compared it to integration. Integration was about everyone living together. Colorblind casting just seems like a desperate attempt to forcefully fix representation by removing white roles, instead of creating new characters as you mentioned was better. Race swapping feels offensive, like we can't have our own characters and need to be given the scraps. These roles were made for white people, not us, we don't want them. I want to end all race swapping, white washing, and any unnessary changes to characters. If people can be mad about Sonic and Mario for being changed, then they can be mad about Ariel. If people really don't wanna see poc represented, then why do movies like Black Panther, Into the Spiderverse or Encanto do successful. People blamed racism of the Little Mermaid's failure, when across the Spiderverse, which also has a black lead, and several supporting black characters is considered one of the greatest movies that same year. It's simply a better movie with an original black character, and not recycled woke garbage.

    • @TommyRoss
      @TommyRoss  5 місяців тому +4

I understand where you're coming from, but I get the feeling a lot of your reasoning comes from personal resentment, disregarding how this revolutionary casting has PROVEN to have had a positive impact on so many people, particularly black/brown children who feel like they can exist in spaces they seemed to be restricted from.
Ariel is a fictional CREATURE. She is not human and there is no singular cultural influence that dominates her or her underwater world (mind you there's a Jamaican crab & calypso music in Disney's version). As far as I know, the Avatar the Last Airbender characters are still PEOPLE with supernatural abilities in a fictional world that DOES have a prominent cultural influence (one that is rarely depicted in mainstream media). To "race swap" Avatar would be depriving an underrepresented group of people a piece of media that's meant to celebrate them. And even so, The Last Airbender still WAS race-swapped in the 2010 film, where white people took on the roles... *most* of that film's backlash came from the poor creative choices as a whole, rather than the whitewashing being the main subject.
Sonic's ugly uncanny valley design should not be compared to Ariel being portrayed by a POC... not at all the same thing. The problem with Sonic was not that his design was different... he was still recognizable... he just was a hideous mix between realism & cartoon. I'm not understanding how some people are having such a difficult time seeing Halle as Ariel, especially when watching the movie. They have similar features --You really don't have to stretch your imagination to see her as Ariel. Having a different shade of skin is not a radical difference & isn't an extreme change at all to me. I see Ariel when watching her, as do millions of others, so why are there so many people who just can't look past her skin color? She's not a different species. It's just ridiculous to me... it's so minor, yet simultaneously has such a major impact to many. What harm is it doing? I can certainly tell you what harm the whitewashed, euro-centric Jasmine did in Aladdin 2019, which is a case ignored by the vocal haters of Halle's Ariel. (Mind you, none of the live-action princesses look like their animated counterparts...and feature-wise Halle ironically is the most accurate of them all).
And representation for gingers? First of all, Halle's Ariel is better representation for gingers than the animated Ariel, who had supernatural firetruck red hair... Halle's Ariel is actually GINGER. Is it only ginger representation if she's white? It's the hair color that matters. Even if a white girl was cast, I guarantee you she wouldn't have been natural ginger actress. This "ginger representation" argument is especially weak -- they've always been prominent in media, have never been excluded or oppressed so honestly idgaf. Whatever hypothetical "bullying" there is, it's nothing in comparison, and certainly doesn't have any systemic presence.
The whole idea that "POC should be restricted to roles that reflect their own culture instead of race-swapping european stories" is just a pseudo-intellectual way of saying, "Stay in your lane, marginalized person! Get out of my white media!" There's absolutely room for both & it's necessary that there is. There should be more media that embraces specific cultures, but saying that POC should only be restricted to films that reflect their ancestry is insane. They belong in familiar, widely known stories, as well... especially in this landscape of reboots/remakes where familiar characters have the most prominence. Ariel is not "white scraps" -- that perspective is such an inherently cynical one. Ariel is a major, iconic, beloved character (whose whiteness has nothing to do with anything) & it's such a special honor for ANYONE to step into that role... the fact that a black woman happened to be the best fit to do so is a moving, powerful statement that Ariel's qualities transcend her skin color. And then you add the historical context of black women in media & it just is a truly beautiful thing that some people are hellbent on making sour. And though it may not resonate with you, I've SEEN this casting decision tremendously impact so many others. Anyone can be Ariel. Anyone can take up space where they've been told they couldn't.
I won't speak to the quality of the actual film or its lack of spectacle, which I think is what mostly hindered the box office performance (it wasn't a financial failure btw, just didn't reach expectations). Also, the rise of braindead "anti-woke" internet mobs played a factor. A film isn't woke just because you see a black person where you didn't expect to. Spiderverse IS a better movie, which is why strong word-of-mouth made it a box office success, but I fear we're not getting anywhere when you use terms like "woke garbage".

@@TommyRoss Race swapping might have a small positive influence, but it isn't a solution I like. It feels more desperate and lazy attempt of solving the problem. Believe me, have you seen how many black men on UA-cam have hated on the Little Mermaid remake? Are they somehow racist?
I never said I supported White Washing Avatar, I was mentioning that the actual groups in Avatar aren't real ethnic groups, and could be argued that their skin color or race doesn't matter. Race wasn't the main complaint since the movie sucked regardless, meaning it wasn't a win for whites, and it's hard to accuse M Night Shyamalan, an Indian, of being racist in favor of whites. Maybe that was a bad example though. What about a character like Lucas from Stranger Things, his race is almost never mentioned or made important in the show. If race wasn't an issue in this world, you would argue he could be made white without any changes to the story. Also Naomi Scott looks alot like Jasmin, and her appearance is very common in the middle east. There are full Arabs and Persians with way lighter skin and "Eurocentric" features than her. If anything, the original is racist for thinking all middle easterners have skin that dark. But they could have done a better by casting a Middle Eastern woman. Speaking of Persians, I don't understand why Jake Gyllenhaal can't play the Prince, he's an Ashkenazi Jew, Jews are from the middle east. He isn't even lighter skin, in the games, the prince ORIGINALLY is depicted with white skin and blue eyes, like some Persians have, just like Ashkenazi Jews can have darkskin and middle eastern features.
The reason i'm comparing Sonic to Ariel, is because they both caused the internet to get mad over changes to a character. Halle also does look recognizable to Ariel, but not similar enough, like Sonic, you proved my point, recognizable but too different. Have you also seen how much people are complaining about Chris Pratt's Garfield voice, and how much the Star Wars fandom complains about characters not looking enough like their animated counter parts. Generally, facial features aside from skin color, hair and eye color aren't always as important, but they do matter. Minor character changes also aren't as much of a problem. Also here's a better question, why does Halle receive more backlash than the other race swaps I mentioned like in the MCU?
I was trying to say I would agree with you about how redheads don't face systemic issues the same. But that doesn't change the fact that hollywood specifically chooses redhead characters like April O'Neal, Annie, Starfire, Iris West, MJ, and of course Ariel to make black?
I wasn't trying to make an analogy with staying in our own lane, you did that. You were against the idea of white washing because of it's history and racism, but support race swapping white characters, because it gives representation. You're saying whites should stay in their lane. This is not apologist to integration in which everyone changes lanes. I personally don't agree with doing something wronged on us, to others. If white washing is wrong, so is black washing, thats equality. You want equity, but I think this conveys the wrong ideas. You're right with the fact it won't replace white representation, but it does replace characters we know. I have never felt unrepresented as a black man. For being minorities, we get a-lot of representation compared to others. It isn't perfect, but this is way too desperate in our case.
I don't care if you support woke culture for representation, or are against the way it changes things. Everyone can all agree, MODERN DISNEY SUCKS! They're not on anyone's side, they don't care about representation, they did it for money. They make anti-woke people against race swapping mad by casting a black woman as Ariel, or Tinker Bell, but turn right around and anger the otherside by casting a lighter skin woman as Nani when it's convenient. They remove representation if people with Dwarfism in a race swapped movie about empowering women. They care more about profiting from woke culture than making good movies, ruining Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, etc. They make bad movies like Strange World, and Wish when their writers go on strike, and terrible remakes no one asked for, and divide everyone. If Disney quit making remakes, this divide wouldn't exist. It doesn't matter if they're giving representation black women, by changing classics and removing gingers or white washing Hawaiians in the next project, everyone looses as long as Disney profits.

What you are talking about is citizenship, not ancestry or descentry. POC (that aren't part white) in European countries are European citizens but do not have white european ancestors. African-Americans are Americans by citizenship, but have black african ancestors. Asian-americans are Americans by citizenship but have asian ancestors. White south Africans have south African citizenship but have white European ancestors. Aboriginal people in Australia have Australian citizenship and are indigenous to Australia. Native Americans in the USA have american citizenship and are indigenous to the USA. First Nation people in Canada have Canadian citizenship and are indigenous to Canada. Native hawaiians in Hawaii are american citizens and indigenous to Hawaii. White Americans are American citizens but have white European ancestors - yet they love to claim that they are the "real true americans" and see themselves as "americans" instead of white or european-americans.
Basically, nani, lilo, and david are Native Hawaiians who have indigenous ancestors that live in Hawaii while Mertle and Cobra Bubbles live in Hawaii but are not indigenous or Native Hawaiians because they have ancestors that descended from other countries.
      Examples:
*Ryan Higa and his friend Sean are from Hawaii but are 100% of Japanese descent. No one looks at them and thinks they are Hawaiian.
*Barack Obama is from Hawaii but is half-white and half-black. No one sees him as Hawaiian.
*Two of the characters from Rocket Power are half-Hawaiian since their dad is white but their mom is native-hawaiian. Their dad has a native hawaiian coworker.
*Hailey and her brothers from Hailey's On It are half-native-hawaiian and half-white since their mom is white and their dad is native hawaiian.
*Moana is a pacific islander and is indigenous to the land she and her tribe live on.
*The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) is part-samoan thru his mom. His samoan side makes his part-pacific-islander but not part-native-hawaiian.
*Hawaii Five-O (not the all-white version (which has zero native hawaiians); the version with Daniel Dae kim) takes place in Hawaii but all of the cops and forensic scientists are not indigenous or native hawaiian while the two recurring native hawaiian characters work various businesses. Majority of the characters in that show are not native hawaiians.

I do think they change Ariel's character a bit including personality wise in the live action. A lot of her motivation and reasoning changed which could had been it's own thing.
About Nani casting. To be honest the whole she isn't indigenous Native Hawaiian is kind of a lie because people are focus on her mom being white. Yes, she is multi-racial but she has Indigenous native Hawaiian(Polynesian) blood in her family from her dad side. She is 25% indigenous native Hawaiian. Also there are rarely any full blooded native Hawaiians even in Hawaii because there are like 5000 full blooded native Hawaiian in existence and majority are mixed race. She also looks like she could be related to the child actress that plays Lilo and some of her other photos does make her darker looking. Even her children photos she was darker than the girl casted as Lilo. Even the girl who voiced Moana who is Native Hawaiian is also mixed race. I'm not surprised people are acting like this. A couple of months ago, I did an image where I showed what I considered a good choice for Odette from The Swan Princess in a live-action remake (Because they are actually trying to get a live-action made and the people who made the original movie even did a concept trailer to show studios that is available on their channel) and some people made a big fuss over it because the girl I picked was a black woman (Pepi Sonuga). First of all, I was not saying she was a number one choice but a good possible choice and that she looked like a black version of the character. And I did that because I was inspired by Halle Bailey's version of Ariel so I'm not just going for picking someone who looks exactly like the character or is just white like the character but picking who is best for the role. But I won't go into too much detail. Either way, it's ridiculous how people get all up in arms when you try to put a minority into an iconic role that was previously held by a white person but will think others are overreacting when you cast someone who isn't racially correct in a role meant for a person of color. It's literally not the same. You said everything right and needed to be said.

The actress chosen to play live-action nani is colorism AND racism because Nani has dark skin and is of native Hawaiian descent while that actress is pale and is half-white and half-filipina who just happened to be born in Hawaii. Being a non-indigenous person born in the state of Hawaii is not the same as being an indigenous Hawaiian. The difficulties Nani faces outside of her family is because of the discrimination against native Hawaiians. People defending that actress just because she is born in Hawaii (and is part-white and white-passing) even though she lied about being indigenous are the same people who think Mertle (the mean white girl that bullies Lilo) is Hawaiian just because she lives in Hawaii. (That casting decision reminds me of the time Nickelodeon casted an actor of Thai descent to play a Mexican character in one of their power rangers shows and when Disney casted a filipina actress to play lizzie mcguire's mexican best friend and when disney casted a white man to play andi mack's dad (when both andi and her mom are both half-chinese and half-white).) [Not only does that actress not look indigenous, but she's white-passing as well. If Disney is so desperate to portray Nani as multiracial, at least pick a multiracial actress that is actually part-native-Hawaiian and looks native hawaiian. If they can fix the casting for David, they can do the same for Nani. There are plenty of actual native hawaiian actresses (with dark skin) that would love the chance to play nani.] It seems like they gave up after finding the perfect kid to play lilo. Makes no sense that they can find native Hawaiians to play lilo and david (and probably the numerous amounts of background people) but couldn't find one that can play nani. [The voice cast of Moana was full of multi-racial people but at least the casting director of that movie made sure that they were at least part-pacific-islander. Casting director for live-action lilo and stitch didn't even bother to do research.] Similar thing can be said about the actress of live-action jasmine. Jasmine is 100% swana and brown, yet the actress is half-white and half-south-asian. [There is already a huge issue with conflating swana people and south asian people as the same when they aren't and a huge issue with casting part-white poc as non-white poc. I know swana people are listed as white in the us census, but they aren't seen as white. Plus, i am pretty sure naomi scott's white side is not even swana.]
[Update: Apparently, the actress is 1/4-native-hawaiian. My point still stands though, since she still benefits from colorism, part-white privlege, and white-passing privilege. She looks more like an older mertle than nani.]

Apparently, there are also guys mad that the actress doesn't have the same body type as Nani. I don't know how to react to that since there is an issue with casting thinner gals as larger gals, but Nani isn't fat or obese and seems like those guys are just mad that they can't "thrist" over the actress's body.

One fact no one seems to acknowledge is this:
There are less than 5,000 full blooded Hawaiians left in the world The people whining either ignore this fact or didn't bother to put forth the effort to learn this fact. The main reason for this is Hawaii became a melting pot. When you meet someone from Hawaii who claims to be Hawaiian is likely to be an Asian/European/Hawaiian mix.
My entire life I've had to deal with ignorant people who thought I was adopted because my mom looked Caucasian due to anemia. Especially in the summer when I'd get very dark. Hawaiian isn't a colour, it's the Spirit of Aloha that makes you a Hawaiian. To see past colour and accept people who may be many other nationalities along with being Hawaiian.
BTW, my mother was also named Nani, short for Kanani which means The Beautiful One. And she was, even without being dark skinned

I do agree that this is a big issue, especially since Nani and Lilo's race is important to a good amount of the story. Examples including the "fakey luau" and the deleted tourist scene, as well as it potentially being part of why Nani can't keep a job. It's very important for them to learn the difference between "native Hawaiian" and "born in Hawaii". Am I going to lose sleep over it? Probably not, but I am still a little mad about it mostly because Lilo & Stitch is my favorite movie and I want the live action to at least do it some justice.

As her having skin as white as snow is actually part of the story. Leaving talent aside bc that isn‘t Part of the discorse.

While I agree that colorism has been a problem in Hollywood. I think we should be a bit more educated about Jasmine and Jesus.
They’re both middle eastern. And the Aladdin movie supported the stereotype of how all middle eastern people are brown with black hair.
When really, they are very diverse in appearance. And are actually another group of Caucasian people. That’s right, Jasmine is technically white. There’s nothing wrong with her casting in live action.
And the same can be applied to Jesus. Sure he may have had a slight tan, but not straight up brown. Not like it matters anyway. He could have looked white with brown hair, or brown with black hair. It’s a very diverse place.

Jews are also a middle eastern people, in which Jesus, you mentioned is part of, but they are always shown with lightskin. Darkskin usually Sephardic and Mizrahi jews don't ever get shown in Hollywood, which is founded by Jews, who are also of middle eastern ancestry, but Ashkenazim are usually lightskin due to european ancestry similar to other groups mentioned. But there are plenty of lightskin Sephardic and Mizrahim that often do get represented like Dan Hedaya. However unlike other ethnicities colorism where lightskin is seen as a uncommon or rare exception to represent, Jewish colorism is way worse since being lightskin is seen as the default for Jews for those in and outside the community, and being darkskin isn't even known to many outsiders. Ashkenazi (lightskins) are a minority in Israel, but control more higher positions of power than darker skin Jews similar to other ethnicities. Even Ashkenazim with darker skin like Sarah Silverman or Sacha Baron Cohen might experience colorism from other Jews.

I can agree with most of your points but given that there is already a black live action princess in Ariel, the argument of Tiana being the only black princess doesn't hold for why Jenna Ortega playing Tiana is different from Halle playing Ariel. Tiana's race isn't essential to the story either. Personally I don't agree with any race swap casting be it Ariel's or Nani's or Tiana's.

    • @treethief4987

Tiana's race is absolutely tied to the story, you see it in her interactions with other characters and her background. Just because you don't see that does not mean it isn't there. Ariel being white legitimately does not matter, but Nani being native Hawaiian and Tiana being black does.

    • @TommyRoss

Tiana's race is absolutely essential to the story & character, not only because she is a woman from New Orleans who struggles to fulfill her dreams due to her "background", but the character was specifically created to add diversity into the Disney Princess lineup...she's a monumental, important, breakthrough figure for the black community.
Just because we have had a black Ariel doesn't mean Tiana should be taken away from the black community, as they still have very few opportunities to shine, especially considering all the white-led media that already exists for your consumption. It's not that hard to grasp.

The princess and the frog is an African american adaptation of the origimal which is russian, (so we could use that logic), but no. Adaptations are variations. And surely if these people were smart, if ariel was danish, her father wouldnt be named after a greek god. You have a problem with Nani casting, yet you praised an olive skinned Latina being cast as Snow White.... The girl who was cast as Nani, Sydney Agudong was born and raised in Hawaii, which makes her legit Hawaiian. She's got warmth and charm about her, that reminds me of Nani.
