    KTM wasn’t the first company to make a serious dirt-worthy dual-sport bike, but you can give the Austrian company credit for making the concept truly legit. The KTM 350EXC-F goes back to 2012 and was most recently revamped in 2020. KTM’s off-road and dual sport models continue to use PDS rear suspension sans linkage. This is the most significant difference between the current KTM and Husqvarna dual-sports. PDS has the advantage of being about 6 pounds lighter and providing greater ground clearance than linkage designs. Otherwise, the two Austrian dual-sport bikes are similar. They both use WP Xact forks with steel coil springs. The KTM uses a cast triple clamp to hold the fork on and if you look close, there are a number of other components that differ, as well. The KTM has Brembo brakes and a Brembo clutch master cylinder. It also uses a Neken handlebar and Excel rims. As far as the motors go, the KTM and Husky have six-speed gearboxes and double overhead cams with four-valves and finger follower valve trains, just like the motocross bikes. The KTM uses a reed valve in the air boot, although that boot has a different shape than the Husky’s because the PDS shock allows more space. That and a different airbox design are the only design features that might account for any difference in performance between them. The KTM also comes with handguards, a skidplate and a radiator fan. The tires are Continentals which were replaced with more aggressive Metzeler MC360s. The KTM sells for $12,149 and weighs 239 pounds without fuel.

    I miss waiting on my Dirt Bike magazine, what magical times in the late 70’s those were. When you could walk into a dealership and see every size and model of bike all in rows. And the smell of new tires, plastic, gas and oil, was intoxicating. ✌️🇺🇸

    Its funny. Iv been riding dirtbikes since i was 8, and in the 17 years iv been riding, all my bikes have had a traditional linkage suspension set up in the back. 18 months ago ( or so ), i picked up a 22 excf 350 with the pds rear suspension. And i gotta say i love it. Wouldn't go back to linkage. As expected, i have heard so many mixed opinions on it, but personally, iv never had a better handling bike. Especially one straight out of the box. I absolutely love it on the enduro, supercross, mx, grass, sand, you name it. It just eats it up and loves it. And im so glad they havnt gone to air suspension in the front of the exc range because air forks is one think i personally hate and dont understand, again ( another mixed opinion ) but sticking with the pds topic i Absolutely love it and it doesnt get caught up on anything. Absolutely love the bike and can't say im in any hurry to upgrade or go with something else.

    My 2017 Husqvarna 350 is proving the perfect trail bike for me, including some lightweight camping. Mine has been turned into a Rally Raid ultra lightweight adv bike for really off road touring. I love it. 20 hours for oil changes but keeping a very close eye on my levels works. 30 hours means filthy oil, 10 hours for trail riding is too frequent. The bigger tank is really useful. My 17 litre tank gives me about 290 safe km, about 170 miles.

      The laughable small amount of engine oils in these modern 4-stroke dual-sport bikes is their Achilles heel.
      We recommend that our customers change their oil after every ride!
      Fail to do so at your peril and pocket book.

    • @TheIdlesurfer
      @TheIdlesurfer Рік тому

      @@DennisMerwood-xk8wp noted but 20 hours is pretty typical, if not a bit frequent, for trail riders. A friend of mine races Rally on a KTM 500 and he rides massively harder than I do an he's changing every 20 to 30 hours. I am paranoid about levels though, checking level every stop with 4 x 250ml bottles of oil. My 701 has a 1.7 litre oil capacity, with a 10,000 km alleged oil change but I've never got near that, I change after every big trip, which can be 2,000 to 5,000 km. I think I'm okay having a physical look at the oil. At 10 hours it was still bottle fresh, 20 hours, still dark caramel. 30 hours, creosote black.

    • @JohannesDalen
      @JohannesDalen Рік тому

      What about a bigger clutch cover so you can have a bit more oil in it?
      I just changed the oil on my fe350 after five hours and it was like new. Pretty obvious since it has only been five hours, but with me as a rider on these enduro practices it sees a lot of extreme lugging and rev limit action with clutch halfway in 😅

    • @TheIdlesurfer
      @TheIdlesurfer Рік тому

      @@JohannesDalen sadly, Johannes, I cannot find a clutch cover for the 2017 FE 350 which increases the capacity by more than 100ml. If anyone knows of such a cover, share it with me. If I could get an increase of 300ml or more I'd be very interested. My 350 gets used for trails, usually at a gentle pace. If I have a clear view and I know I am not going to run into horses, dog walkers, hikers I will go at it, but most of my distance on the bike is carried out at fairly sedate speed, but on road sections, with 48 teeth on the rear, I am cruising at 110/120 kph.

    Can anyone please explain to me, an ignorant European, why do you call EXC bikes dual sports in America? In Europe the EXC bikes are enduros and the SX bikes are motocross, both are high performance, high maintenance off road machines, but the EXC ones are tuned more for trail riding and has the parts to make them road legal for riding from trail to trail. Are the US EXC bikes different to the European ones? To my understanding a dual sport bike is something like a Honda CRF300L which is underpowered and much lower performing but also much lower maintenance compared to the EXC's.

    • @ridgeridermoto
      @ridgeridermoto Рік тому

      In America, a dual sport is what we call an off road bike that is street legal. It does not refer only to underpowered bikes like the Honda. Because the KTM has a license plate, we call it a dual sport. If it were off road only it would be called an enduro. However it is the 350 EXC-F, F meaning dual sport (street legal).

    Those fork crowns, upper and lower are FORGED , look at the separation lines. If your going to play expert and review a world class bike learn something about manufacturing and get it right. So many of you motorcycle reviewers want to compre Euro bikes to Japanese but don't have a clue how much more durable they are because they don't compromise and use cheaper steel frames, cast AL upper fork clamps, durable foot pegs. the Spanish bike would still be available it back in the late 60's & 70's the reviewers paid off and weren't not manufacturing and materials dummies. I raced vintage motorcross for years and anyone who knows anything knows the the Eurobikes generally used much better meterials and last longer WO breaking or needing to be rebuilt. You get what you pay for.
