Around 2007-10 I did a lot of research on mono-chromatic light and its affects on bird species, at the back of a birds is a gland called the Pineal gland, this along with the hypothalamus are endocrine glands that produce hormones (Pineal melatonin, thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to name a few) that triggers the pituitary gland to release of ova from the ovaries into the oviduct, however the Pineal gland is also stimulated by red spectrum light, even if a bird is completely, 100% blind it still can detect and differentiate between light and dark, as infra-red can and does penetrate though the eyes and can even penetrate the skin around the eyes to stimulate the Pineal gland which in turn functions as a independent circadian oscillator (photic stimulus internal clock) this in turn signals to the hypothalamus though the release of melatonin, this then sets the hypothalamic master clock. In fact the pineal gland is so stimulated by the red light spectrum, that in trials increase in egg production are well documented, so If you want to really start your birds well when the breeding season starts try using red LED's that are producing orange/red light at 620 nano-meters. hope this is of interest. Hi, that sounds fantastic. I’m currently undertaking a bioveterinary science degree where we’ve recently looking into the pineal gland being activated by light etc, I wasn’t aware if that affect with red light, so it will definitely be something which I’ll be implementing into my bird room! Thankyou for the advice!
Another informative video Oliver. Thanks for sharing mate. Just on the chicken egg shells, I place mine in the microwave for 2 minutes to kill any bacteria etc on the shells. Let them cool and crush as suggested. Free range eggshells are particularly a challenge.
Great video ... very instructive and well explained, it will definitely come in handy 👍👍 It would be really great with a video about "how to make a breeding program"... So that one don't mix "family" together by accident, and also how to breed a certain color, e.g. red canary or white canary or whatever ...🤔🤷♂ Many many thanks for showing and please keep up the good work 🙏👌
Hello, with the protein powder is it whey powder you get from the health food shop. How do you add to the mix Thanks again Ollie, enjoy watching your episodes
I use egg shells for my birds, and in order to avoid smell from them, I bake them well in an hot oven in order to dry them completely and make them more brittle and easier to crush. Egg food I make from hard boiled chicken eggs mixed together with dry white bread in a food processor, the whole egg, she'll and all, goes in the mixer, add dry bread till it is a nice crumbly texture. Then I add vitamins, minerals and powdered sugar too, just for the taste. Some people also grate carrots very fine and put some Ropa B in too. Since I mostly deal with chickens I kind of give all the same food, chicks and the finches in the same fineness, the larger chickens more like chopped eggs and so on. Sprouted seeds, wheat in particular, are a firm favourite.
Hello my friend i have a question and I'll be thankful if you answer me 😊 i have goldfinches and when i breed them and put them in cages all close to each other if one of then fear something like fireworks or earthquake at night they all get crazy and panicking and bumping into the cage walls and they end up loosing their wing feathers do you have this problem ? And if no how do you prevent it ??
I desperately need advice mate my canary’s laid eggs I’m doing my best but pls I’m scared for them don’t get me wrong 😂 they doing great I’m a paranoid one 🤪🙏🏼 any advice pls

Do you keep the food bowls topped up with food all the time or do you only give them a certain amount each day? Lovely set up by the way 👍🏻
