- In this video I picked open a Folger Adam prison or jail cell lock and gutted it so we could look at the super-oversized pins and ball bearings.

How strange as I very literally, quite by coincidence, just had a Folger Adam Mongol Mortise cylinder on my bench which is giving me difficulty to pick. I thought this would be a "piece of cake" since is't so huge and it looked like the keyway would be wide open. I have the key and it's has very simple stairstep bitting with low key cuts at the tip progressing to high key cuts at the bow. Easy Right? Well after I had no luck I pulled the tailpiece and saw that it is a master ring cylinder! So I cheated and went on-line to see if anyone had fooled with one of these to perhaps see what "pesky" pins are inside -- low and behold bosnianbill had just picked one! On mine, it seems when I tension it, the master ring also rotates slightly, causing the key pins to jam and not want to lift any higher! I'm using the Praxis "Dangerfield" kit with 0.015 thick picks and experience the same dragging on the warding that bosnianbill did. Now with a bit more knowledge of what's inside -- "wish me luck", well grant me better skill!
So, how did it go? 3 months later and you are still banging your head against it... or did you get it? :P
Ken Nixon any luck yet?
Ken Nixon any luck? We took the time to read your lengthy post. Please reward us... :-)
Yes. Let us know what happened. Did you break out of prison?
Mogul ... not mongol. :-)
I work in a county jail and there's one of these on my office door, everything is done remotely via electric releases for day to day operations but I was always at awe at the SHEER SIZE of the things. The keys are gigantic and would be tough to hide on your person if you stole them, guess that's a side benefit of the dual sheer line design.
My favorite are the ones that are even bigger by Folger Adam, 7 pound lever locks with the 5 inch keys
@@idkidk4334When talking to others in my maintenance team, I call them the paracentric keys. When talking to the officers, I call them "the big chunky bastards".
Ahh finally. Just on time. My cellmate was just making a new shank
Someone should take a lock like this and include a second ring so a standard core can be used and give Bill three sheer lines to pick to instead of just two. :D
Just want to thank you Mr Bill. I have been watching your videos for about a year now and have become rather decent at picking locks thanks to your lessons. It has actually helped me and people around me. Obviously i use it for only legal purposes. Locked out of my house, no problem. Neighbors locked out? No problem. Ive even helped my boss when he forgot his keys at home.
Great video as always ! This was particularly interesting and you explained everything beautifully. Thanks for this !
I feel like this this is one of those videos that you'll end up on a 'list' just by watching..
Thank you Bill! They used these on my cell block and now I'm finally out. It took me 3 days to pick. Hardest part was getting a windshield wiper smuggled in so I could make a tension wrench.
You could make a nasty challenge lock out of that to pass on
Thanks for the lesson my friend, I can promise you Its now stored away in my brain in my valt room, I will not forget it, In this world even the good men or the inlightened can end up behind one of these locks,
Am I the only one that likes to listen to Bill while he works these locks. It is so strange to me how fascinating this is to watch. It reminds of the saying, "it's not the kill, it's the thrill of the chase".
It's great to watch the maestro play.
Well done on a tricky lock even without any magic spritz!
You did a good job on picking the large prison lock
love them locks thanks bill
LOL I saw those locks every day. Until I retired. Good Stuff!
How are the two sets of key used?
I have an old Midwestern or Midstates Penal Lock Co, lock. Odds are the newer Folger Adams/Southern Steel locks have a grandmaster key, at least one sub-master key and a change key. Best & Schlage Everest/Primus are good for crazy key control, and numerous tiers of sub-master keying.
I don’t pick locks but love your channel if you ever have a problem with your tensioner not being thick enough just try tapping two together 😎 until you find the correct thickness. I’m not too sure if it will work but it’s worth a try.
Always enjoy seeing how all these different locks are picked !
Can you possibly try an automotive lock one day please ?
Interesting lock! Great pick!!!
Huge lock and impressive picking!
thanks Bill!
Hi Bill!
Great video. Listen, I've got limited access to tools, and I was wondering what the best way you thought would be to open these with improvised instruments. I tried some plastic like you'd use for bumping Medeco, but that didn't do the job like it would the old Patriots...
Thanks!!! Love the channel!
...and if you stay legal, you won't never worry to see another one of these in your life...
LLOOLLL You made my day !
Haha same but different.
I used to work in a Diesel engine rebuild shop, occasionally we would come across a tamperproof fastener that resembled a 6 sided torx, but only had 5 points so it looked like a star.
It was used on Deutz engines and some diesel fuel injection stuff too.
We hadda sign that thing out cause I guess it's used in prisons, the shop needed to keep an eye on that.
Nice work as usual
lovely lock bill well picked thanks stiglocks..r
lol your tensioner.... like a hotdog down a hallway with that lock.
Lovely lock picking there bill
Very nice lock Bill
very very cool lock! and you did a great job picking this Beast! also very well explained as always!👍☺ yours t&j
What an amazing huge lock Bill. A collectors treasure. Noticed that there was paint on the front or what looked like paint. Clean it off and get her on display buddy.
I think the paint add to the unknown history of the lock
I must admit, I like a mystery with locks as I collect new and old, and like to keep old as they are. To me they have served a purpose of many years and should then sit and rest as they were found.
That is most certainly US Prison System grade "depression green" paint. No mystery where this thing was.
Great info buddy ;o))))
Nice Bill 👍🏻👍🏻
Bill could you create both keys for this lock... I am kinda interested in how they look. And how the 2 keys are different.
Nice job.
Something interesting to note, those spools are only on one side of the 2 shear-line design.
So only the shear-line you picked had spools.
I noticed when you have the your of your lock lab (very impressive by the way. You are obviously a very organized person) you have a *prison key* on your work bench
wow that thing was a treat!
A nice big boy lock!
I've always heard that you could pretty much pick those things with a chopstick! I'd love to try one myself, being on the other side of one a time or two!
When dealing with super sized locks Allen Keys that have the shot side trimmed and ground make excellent cheat tension wrenches. As for that lock being dirty inside maybe for lock-sport locks but for working locks especially outdoor locks not so much because most of those locks and I am sure a institution lock was never taken apart and cleaned but instead was serviced once a year if that with a can of WD40
It would be tougher if that was still in use trying to pick it. You would probably bend you tensioner because even with the key you have to use a bit of pressure to open those. They’re meant for a swing door and when you turn the key you move the lock out of the door and have to overcome the spring tension that pushes it into the door to keep it secure
Interesting lock. I had a friend that worked in a prison and asked if he could get me an old lock and he replied under no circumstances would give out prison locks. I was gutted! Your really lucky to get your stuff!!
tonyholt90 we have these and similar at a school. A similar one i got the master suck in and it took 1.5 hours for maintenance to get it out (i did get the door open)
Could you stack two tension wrenches side by side to make a thicker one? You could mix and match the thick and thin ones to create a size that fits best.
I'd try an Allen key.
@@yozenfrogurt09 I do sometimes use Allen keys, they are quite good, especially rigid and strong. I grind the sides down to make a nice flat. You can make custom tension wrenches this way to deal with unique keyways and especially locks that seem like a lot more tension than a normal wrench can apply.,
Good afternoon Bill. Just wanted to know where I can find one of these Folger Adams prison locks. I have looked everywhere. Thank you!
Hi Bill, I work for the DOC in my state as a maintenance supervisor and have been voluntold to take on the maintenance and repair of these and other locks. I'm in need of training resources and would like your recommendations as I have already had to pull and replace an ASSA lock assembly that jammed halfway through it's rotation from unlock to lock and the key broke at the 2 o;clock position and the extraction tools have proved useless in removing the key.
Hi Bill, what a great lock, I just imagine you are in prison, for you is easy to escape,do you think they are good locksmith like you in prison, sometimes they think twice of escaping.
Thanks Bill😊😊😊
Bill the ball bearings is for reducing wear from picking lol
I have more experience operating FOLGER-ADAMS locks over my past career managing State prisons than I wish I had. While your picking this lock is impressive this kind of lock would only be used to control sub-segments of a prison (school class rooms, offices, interior gates in an area, etc.) and a BIT KEY LOCK would be used to control all large sections of a prison and highly secure areas like control rooms or the arsenal or gates for entire wings like those leading to housing areas or hub areas. I once asked you private if you could pick a BIT KEY LOCK and I am happy to say you did not think you could. That is why they are used in such environments.
You have to ask why there are master keys for this in addition to the normal keys to open this lock. It is not uncommon for a Superintendent or Warden or executive staff to have a limited number of master key sets to tour a prison with carrying a large number of keys and for times of crisis to travel through a prison quickly with teams of security staff to surprise and take back an area of the prison inmates had overtaken and a second way to unlock a defective lock. Nice job picking this one.
Maybe in a jail a bit key lock but that would be bypassed with something like music wire and pliers. Seen LOTS of folger-adams for temp holding or bean holes. However for doors and the like medeco, assa and schlage are the most popular around here. Of course it depends on when the place was built as the cost to refit a entire institution would be wicked high.
lolz. i know that lock has seen service. inmate paint details always paint over the lock. in older facilities the in house locksmith spends half his day unjamming painted over locks. some can be scraped down to a really old layer of lead paint.
Why didn't you try raking it first ? I am a fan of raking,,,, do you feel it's good practice to rake first, then pick ? TY Sir,, I learned something with the two share lines,, very cool, you are an awesome picker, we are lucky to have you ! 😎🖒🇺🇸
Nice intro haha good
Nice video
Should have called this one "Bill breaks out of prison"
Aren't the smaller driver pins exactly as long as the thickness of the master ring? If that's so, the master key would only have a different cut for the last pin, which has a single driver pin.
I got a souvenir key from Alcatraz... I'm sure it will open it! 😜🍺🙃
how much time did it take to get the lock open neat
Wow, everything looks so tiny next to this massive lock.
I noticed the "75762" stamped into the back side of the core. That might be the key code, but for a lock that size, a "7" will be a totally different depth that a common residential key. That is IF that's the code...
Nice pick, Bill. Be very interesting on how those keys would look. I take it, the only difference would be in the cut depths? Can you still find key blanks for them?
I just ordered 20 key blanks last week. About $35 each.
Hello Bill, have a wild guess, and I am only a subscriber, I never picked a lock, but I watch all your videos.
Do you think this lock would give different feedback than regular ones? Do you think that by picking it many times you will be able to tell what shear line are you picking at?! you opened the thing, and that is a success, but I was wondering if it is worth playing with it more? I believe it would be such a nice lock for feedback training.
am I wrong? did you notice something different?
If you had picked it to the other sheer line, how would you have gutted it? It definitely does not appear as though you could push the large ring and cylinder out the front.
nice :)
So, it's like those sleeve on core locks that whip you
Stupid question, but what stops the ball bearings from falling out of the pins they are attached to?
The zigzag of the Keyway and 'Pin hole' keeps them from falling down and the cup in the end of the Pins captures them and keeps them from rolling out to their neighboring position before they are captured by the shear line.
@bosnianbill can you do a video on proven industries puck lock for trailers?
bill i what to know how the pin match up for each sheer line. i dont understand how pin#5 would line up. look a little to long ?
I think the length of the #5 key pin would let it line up with either shear line depending on the key bitting. A really low bitting would allow it to line up with the core shear line, and a high bitting would push it up to line up with the master shear line.
Hotdog down a hallway. That's all I could think of when he was picking it.
Lol, last spring(1st position) came out like a slinky! Good job Bill, woulda liked an explanation of why,(the purpose of 2 key holders)What the different keys did.
LOST & FOUND Warden vs patrol?
sivalley what is the difference in function. What did the warden key do that the patrol key didn't?
LOST & FOUND warden opens all cells patrol one key for each cell would be my thought
Hey bill would you be interested in a .010 of an inch pick?
You’re out! Now RUN!!!! :-)
bill, ya goofball, if you pick to the top sheer line on the master ring, then the plug won't come out. the ring doesn't come out the front, the plug can't be pushed back, and the plug and the ring will be locked together with the remaining key pins. I've pinned, picked, assembled, and disassembled master ring corbin russwins and boy howdy do you have to get it just right. you have to pick to the bottom sheer line only if you intend to disassemble it. big ol' pain in the neck.
Well good thing he did it correctly or this could have been a very long video...
Who would I need to kill to get one of those prison locks from you Bill
Hey Bill just stumbled upon your channel, I work in a state prison and I would love to see you pick a folder Adams flat key lock
I want to see him pick it with what an inmate might be able to get ahold of. like a safety pin or hair pin lol. I highly doubt prisoners are allowed to have lockpick sets lol
Adam Adamson I've seen inmates make hex security buts from melted and tempered Saran wrap, they have all the time in the world to think about stuff
what did the 2nd sheerline do? I saw no mechanism attached to that huge sleeve
Does nothing extra just lets you open the lock as normal, but with a different key without reducing security like traditional master pinning.
Some Idiot The simple master pinning where the lower ranked keys are shorter in only one position seem equally secure to me, but limits the number of lower keys for each master. Especially if you don't want inmates to figure out the master by comparing lowers that differ in different pins.
Didn’t LPL rake one of these in about five seconds? Or was that a different model?
The one LPL raked didn't have any security pins. And it had the keys set up so that the master positions were all lower than the non-master positions, which meant that getting everything to the first position would open the lock.
In the unlikely event that I am ever locked up in an old cell (unjustly of course) I would want you as a cell mate so long as they just happen to let you keep your tools with you.
could you try this again but with what you'd find in prison or at least attempt
I see them all the time but I always have the key
Now to it like you are in the cell. Pick it from behind the bars, stick your arms trough the bars and pick the lock.
I would love to have his picking skills...until I got arrested for breaking and entering. I wonder how he would do in a European picking competition.
Do you know why they make these locks so Big? Does it really make a difference.
I'd venture to guess that the large size and mass make the locks more resistant to physical attack. Also, the giant keyways mean tools to pick them will likely be much larger - and easier for guards to detect.
Do you have any cool warded locks?
#Best youtuber
barton street jail hamilton canada uses these. im an ex con 75762 on lock is that serial #
I’m blind as a bat and I was sort of half asleep. So, as a result of this, at around 4:00, my crappy eyes thought I was looking at a set of old style freakin’ kitchen scales. I have no idea why. I’m tired. I need to go to bed.
Lpl raked it open
First, let me admit that I am not even qualified to pick a Master Lock...
I have a Quick and possibly stupid question: With ball bearings in all the holes, would it be possible to just push 'em all up to the point where the line between the lowest pin and the ball is at the shear line to open it?
Pin stacks are probably too long to go that high.
That's what comb picks are for.. but indeed, the pins would probably be too long for that.
I work at a zoo and we use this for dangerous animals lockout, where a keeper can clean a exhibit an know that the animal is in a locked out area.
Why are prison locks so hard to pick
bosnianbill do you have more videos on high security prison locks? I just got a locksmith position at a prison and I haven't dealt with these types of locks before... I'd love to get some of your knowledge!
How long are you in for?
Springs vibration music can be another hearing technique #keithrichard #ninahagen
Quote-"If I don't pick it, you won't see the video." The paradox is how would we know you ever had the lock if you didn't pick it?
Would you just make a title that says (1139) Nope.... ?
He has already started doing that. They're called "whipped by..." :-)
Yes, he did.
yeah his whipped by videos are the ones he rage quits on. i have to say though, bill seems like a very very patient man.
Bill will never get locked up
If he does, it won't be for ... long.
You need salad tongs instead of tweezers
I really enjoy your videos Bill. What are the odds on telling us your day job?
Denny Skerb I think he was EOD but good luck having anyone who picks locks for more than a hobby and isn't a locksmith tell you what they do.
From the little anecdotes he has "spilled" over the years I think it is a reasonably safe bet that he is a security advisor of some sort for one of the three letter acronym agencies.
lol. secret agent man.
i was a locksmith for 5 years saw one of those was stupid easy to pick always wonder why they made those...
our guess was wear because there is only one cam
small shime for master key on a single plug would wear fast and they don't expect inmate to pick locks.
You can't pick them from the inside
That’s a bummer that you don’t have a key for that lock.
3:30 use your non sharding prison toothbrush and be authentic
4:44
You know, There's only so many intros bill.
Honored_0ne not for him
well he films in 1080p, and his intros are all about 10 seconds long at 30 frames per second. that means there are 622080000 possible intros. as of today he's on video 1262, so he has at least another 622 million videos before you start seeing repeats, and then he'll probably just start doing 15 second intros
I like your math! 😃
worst part, I did that math wrong. I forgot to factor in the number of colors a computer monitor can display. the total number of possible 10 second intros is 1.0436771e+16. you got over a quadrillion videos to go before you run out of intros.
I'm not even gonna bother getting into audio. I don't know what kind of resolution youtube has for audio or what they compress it to but we're starting to get into math that supercomputers would take a minute to figure out
@@butre. doesn't make sense. Can you detail your computation ?
