1,000 LIKES for Detroit? Despite it's flaws, Chicago is still probably my favorite big city in the country and a place everyone NEEDS to visit at some point in their lives.

All my family and friends always complain about the winter in Chicago, you'd be the first one who doesn't complain. In Seattle they can go to hot springs! Evem Toronto has really cool spas with thermal waters. Why not chicago?!!! There's just one.

I’m rolling my eyes. Don’t trust an anti-Chicago video from a guy who can’t even pronounce the name. This video is such a touristy perspective of Chicago. Obviously it’s cold. Obviously we love sports, but you don’t NEED to be into sports to have fun. Taxes are on par with other states. Have you seen Californian property taxes? Bad schools? Sure some bad apples here and there but our charter school’s that anyone can attend have the highest college acceptance rates. Traffic sucks, but that’s why we have the L and CTA! Best in the nation next to NYC. Parking sucks, but that’s every big city! Crime is so overblown and it’s only concentrated in places viewers would never even be in, and limited to members in GANGS.

I've lived in Chicago for a decade and can say without any hesitation that this city is not run well, has tons of educational problems, is extremely violent, does not support free thought, has insane amounts of debt, is in a pension crisis due to years of horrendous fiscal mismanagement, is thoroughly corrupt at every level of government, and is 10 years away from a Detroit style collapse on it's current trajectory. This is not to say there aren't positives because they do exist, but the city by in large could be so much better if it had been run competently. The food is awesome, the public transportation is good (albeit always dirty), some neighborhoods are safe enough, and the architecture is stunning.

Born and raised, lived in Chicago all my life. It’s one of the most historical cities. Also one of the cleanest. Walking downtown, it is quite clean compared to other major cities. Being well-traveled myself, I would definitely say we have the BEST food out of the whole U.S. 👍 We do have lots of pot holes everywhere that made me chuckle. Being a Chicagoan, it is very flat here, all urban but that comes with pros as we don’t have to worry much about any natural disasters here. If you like the fast life & city, bars and restaurants on every corner Chicago is for you. Everything is within arms reach. Summer is the best, thousands of free events millions of tourist come to visit to attend. Not a lot of nature, but definitely a lot to do here as far as events and entertainment.

I’ll also mention that much of his reasoning revolving around cars is moot if you don’t have a car, and most of us really don’t need one (I pay like $175/mo for a rideshare app’s commuter pass, giving me 4 rides/day). Traffic isn’t really that bad compared to plenty of other cities I’ve been to, especially around the world, and there ARE great ways around it: Chicago is literally fitted with layers of tunnels underneath the loop (lower Wacker), an entire lakeside expressway on the other side (lakeshore), and a beautifully designed grid in between that’s easy to navigate and understand. If one or several parts are congested, you’ve got options. Our winters are cold, but half of the major cities in the whole world get cold, and we don’t deal with any truly disastrous weather patterns like warmer, tropical places, and we don’t have major earthquakes. The Midwest gets tornadoes but it’s rare that’s even a concern for Chicago metro to deal with. You learn to appreciate the seasons, you take advantage of the great winter activities, and you appreciate where you are. We also DO have nature - we have nature IN the city. Literally have the video he shows are sweeping shots of our ginormous parks taking up the whole right side of the loop. And just north, we have Lincoln Park, with the Lincoln Park zoo, and miles and miles of nature-lined lakefront trail. I never have moments where I think, “I could use more greenery.” Lol. There are NATURE nature people, and that’s fine: Portland or Denver or something offer some urban structure doused in trail-runner aesthetic - don’t move here. But that’s not a reason NOT to move here, that’s just a preference thing. Sports is a similar complaint, but I absolutely despise sports, and I have never been unhappy here because lots of people are obsessed with them. I even live close to Soldier Field in the south loop, so sometimes we get overflow congestion from games. Guess what? That equals money. It equals property value. It equals city pride. No one’s peeling a jersey over my head forcibly and there’s plenty else to do around here while The Sports are Sporting. The city is corrupt - almost openly so - and the government often runs in borderline chaos because of reverberating effects of previous corruption. Remarkably, Chicago itself manages to not only survive those struggles, but still come out of it as one of the greatest cities in the world. In almost every category, we have national or international acclaim. I’m in no way justifying corrupt government, but for those of us who MAKE UP Chicago, that corruption doesn’t define us; we keep delivering, while simultaneously working to vote better and build better. Move here if you think you can contribute to that iterative process. Finally, we have plenty of jobs, people make decent livings (he literally mentioned several times how comparably affordable Chicago is in terms of large cities like it), and it IS easily navigable; if someone lands a more entry-level position out of college, having a cheaper apartment or roommates 20 minutes north with easy train or bus access is no problem for people. One of Chicago’s strengths IS its affordability in ratio to its job market; what I make here in tech gives me exponentially more, right downtown, than my coworkers in San Francisco making the same money and living an hour and a half away from the office with 2 or 3 roommates. We have the work here, and of course it’s competitive - but it’s not the terrifying nightmare of cities with $8k/mo rent and 5k people applying for the same apprenticeship. Chicago is a gritty city, and it’s built on relationships more than anything: work your ass off, build your network in a smart way, and you’ll thrive here better than anywhere else and be extremely happy. Oh, and our housing market is actually amazing; it’s one of the few places where your mortgage can easily be less than if you rented something similar. Taxes are high, but you always come out on top because the city is quite affordable for what you get otherwise. Listen, we have our flaws, and Chicago isn’t for everyone, but I always like to tell people this: Chicago had two fires to rebuild after, and it gave us a chance to really imagine the *perfect* city, not just one haphazardly built up on top of itself over time as it grew. We’re the blueprint for American metropolises, filled with the best parts of the rest of the country all pieced together into this vibrant, innovative, hardworking, and tasty city where we gorge ourselves with midwestern comfort food and varieties of other cultures’ foods that make Chicago so much richer and more dynamic. It’s full of surprise and timeless design all at the same time. These are the reasons to move here.

On the subject of the job market in Chicago, I know you said you’re in tech, but I’m planning to go into the medical field, and was looking at going to the University of Illinois at Chicago. Do you personally think that there are or will be jobs available in the medical sector of Chicago?

Nightwalker 4202 100%! Chicago has a good handful of very active hospital systems, too, and so the industry in general is also somewhat competitive. We have Northwestern, Rush (where I go), UI Health (where you’re looking), UIC, Loyola, and a handful of smaller systems as you move further out. World-renowned procedures, innovation, conferences, etc. happen here. Really a great city for it - we even have an area near UIC called the medical district. Highly recommend.

Nightwalker 4202 if it helps, Chicago is also a pretty safe place in terms of the virus right now. I’m still quarantining because I’m immunosuppressed - and I can’t speak for the future, because restaurants and bars opened up for inside dining this past weekend - but things are looking pretty good. Feel free to find me on Instagram @bestfoodalex if you have any more questions or want to peep some of the food we’ve got here 🧐

Currently, I am in New Zealand (have lived in both the North island and South island) and can tell you Chicago is actually the best place I've ever lived. There are many opportunities there. It's affordable, has excellent options for healthcare, there are good schools, always something to do, great food, high salaries, beautiful parks, etc.

@@williamwade3443 Rahm Emanuel focused on bringing world class institutions and international investment to Chicago as well as large scale events. He worked tirelessly to expand the core which led to a massive real estate boom, perhaps the most significant in our history and made Chicago the U.S. leader in corporate relocations/investments for 7 years consecutively. He tried to raise Chicago's global profile and keep it relevant on the world stage as the region struggles to stay within the top 5 in many metrics in the United States.
Of course anyone can be criticized but compared to Lightfoot who is not a cosmopolitan mayor and lacks any vision or ambition to propel Chicago forward on a global level while she focuses on rebuilding neighborhoods that have seen disinvestment for decades and underdelivers like proposing a casino on the south or west side to prey on the poor she's a far cry from Rahm and developers are running from the ARO requirements so Chicago's one great flourishing asset, it's downtown core will stagnate as other cities greatly expand their footprints.

She’s got zero business savvy and gee-golly doesn’t even seem to care her fellow African Americans dying (4 deaths first weekend of May - ONE MORE death then we closed the entire f’ing state for) in the south and westside ghetto, yet she virtue signals she’s saving us from the very fake pandemic. Pathetic.

I lived in Chicago all my life, and I'm sorry, the place is a shit hole 🕳, 700 + murders, not to mention the car jackings, gang shootings, robberies and burglaries, also the rapes, kidnapping, thefts and retail thefts are the highest ever, and let's not forget to mention the city is all boarded up and looks horrible, while buisness are moving out. I'm in the process of moving out, 40 years is long enough.

On 50 cent behalf for a small retail theft say a gum or Shirt or a hat you left store by accident shouldn't be such a big deal more then some drug dealers. Thats nothing compare to gangs and murderer s and Mayors corruption. Or Rapists or Kid nappera or black s shooting cops. Or corupted cops shooting on blacks or foreign people.
