Latvian President: Russian Atrocities In Ukraine Are Causing Divisions In Society

- Russian atrocities in Ukraine have created an "emotionally charged" atmosphere in Latvia, according to its president, Edgars Rinkevics. Speaking to Current Time in Riga on January 9, he described divisions between those who had suffered repression in the Soviet era and some Russian-speaking Latvians.

The Baltic people remember Russian atrocities and oppression. It seems the leaders in Slovakia and Hungary have forgotten. As for the West, we've gotten soft; we've never lived under Russian oppression and so our response to Ukraine has been lukewarm. So frustrating! We need to step it up because it's not only the history books that speak of blood, it's the future.

1:48 _they long for Russians to come here_
They should not be yearning for Russia, they should go to Russia now.
One of few valid points being made here tbh.
If one openly advocates the occupation of the nation one resides in, one is asking for it. And one can hardly be surprised to be asked to scoot over to Russia, in that/this case.
if they go to Russia they will try to go back in 1 month. They have no clue.
You miss the point. We have a lot of these ethnic Russians in the city where I live in Ukraine. I'ts NOT just old people. There's teenagers, 20-somethings, who grow up purely Russian, and I am in the western half of Ukraine, not the east near Russia. If they went back to Russia, they would be ordinary people. Here, they have the biggest businesses, the highest jobs. They were masters and we were their slaves. They want that back. Why would they return home and be ordinary workers when they can be rich lords here, if only their dear fellow Russians will come and restore things to "normal:?
It's even more disgusting considering HOW those people end up in Latvia. In 1941, June 13-14 40 thousand people were taken from the 3 tiny Balti states _(with the combined area smaller than the state of Missouri in US)_ by the NKVD, loaded on the railway wagons designed for a transport of cattle -- and sent to Siberia. Entire families, women, children, old people. One third didn't make it to the destination. They died already on the road to thirst, cold and hunger. Very few ever came back form the hell of the Gulags, the Siberian concentration camps.
There was a plan set beforehand by Stalin for a certain amount of people and NKVD didn't really care who exactly was caught, they had a quota to fill so anyone who was caught was deported. Both of my mother's and fathers families were targeted, one had a tiny farm of 10 acres and two horses, and the farm of my other grandfather was 16 acres. Both had big families, worked like a mule and were still dirt poor. Like, half starving, barely making ends meet poor. Didn't matter, if you had any property you were a "kulak" ("oppressor") and had to go.
With deportations and forceful conscription into Red Army combined Baltic states lost more than 10% of the population.
It was promptly replaced by imported Russian nationals. There was entire system to facilitate this process, with government sponsored advertisements in the newspapers in Russian cities promising good paying jobs and free apartments.
There were government greeters waiting on the railway platform, as soon as the new arrivals stepped off the train they were handed the keys to their brand new apartments, while locals had to wait in line for theirs a decade or more. Sounds familiar?
So it was the textbook case of colonialism. That's how the Russian Empire has fortified it's power on the newly conquered areas for centuries. Only the word salad to cover it up had changed.
And now we can see why this colonialism was so necessary for the Empire. That's the hook they will now use to claw back the territories they had temporarily lost. Lovely people, nothing to say...
Same thing happened where I live in the 1830’s. The Cherokee named it The Trail of Tears.
@@seed_drill7135 Yes, the parallels are obvious.
One difference thou, Uncle Sam didn't try to cover up the atrocities with fairy tales about rainbows and unicorns in a "just and equal" society.
Uncle Sam simply didn't bother.
Now, when you're colonized while at the same time incessantly gaslighted about how much you yourself wanted to become a slave and how your new masters care about you -- compared to when you're simply colonized, which one would you prefer?
The same thing Nazis did.
@@vmasing1965Thank you for sharing your family’s story & your insight into why some foolishly believe Russian propaganda. It’s tragic, how cruel people can be & how long that cruelty can affect later generations. I disagree with what you say about the aftermath of Native American genocide, though. Those who survived the diseases, massacres & forced migrations were told they were better off, being “civilized” by the white man. Their children were out in boarding schools where they were forbidden from speaking their own languages or learning their own history & culture. To this day, Native Americans suffer from high rates of suicide, alcoholism & poverty. Whether non-Native people learn about the real history depends very much on which US state they’re in. Many of the "masochists" are descendants of those who were or collaborated with the oppressors.
Picture a big brother nation in a vast empire that has nothing else going for them except their dictator and lots of subjugated nations. They lost alot of it, but now supposedly as the west is weak, they saw a chance to get it all back together with some revenge.
It is not the Latvian people who support Russia, but Russians who live in Latvia who support Russia. Russia has been pushing "russification" into other countries for decades. They also did this in Ukraine. "Diversity" is intended to divide and conquer.
You have to understand that these people are generally the descendants of Russians brought there during the Soviet Union, given executive positions and privileges, which they somehow think they will regain once Russian colonial power is restored. After WW2, locals where exiled to Siberia and Russian speakers were brought in. Many after decades living there cannot/do not want to speak the local language. They feel they lost their privileges.

It wasn't only a communist thing. Russians conquering neighboring countries is about a thousand years old. Isolationists around the world would not even have heard of any conquest until long after it happened. Then they would have said "none of our business". @@frankhoffman3566 War mobilization and the expansion of law enforcement agencies, particularly the Federal Security Service, carries economic risks, as it obliges the government to continue to make expensive payments to these groups even when faced with budgetary challenges. These payments are an economic time bomb: high wages are extremely difficult to reduce, and doing so for the main pillar of Putin’s rule-the army and security forces-is not an option.
For Putin, the war is an organizing principle of his domestic and foreign policy. To abandon the war without something that the Kremlin can define as victory would be impossible. A long conflict over Ukraine not only satisfies Putin’s geopolitical ambitions and vision but is also turning into his regime’s survival strategy. The trouble will be that his political goals are incompatible with the economic ones. Eventually, something will have to give.

When all the former Russian states got their freedom, Russia was playing the long game by having placed Russian citizens in those states, as evidenced by the fake takeover of Crimea and the Eastern Ukrainian regions. It always amazed me that so many Russians stayed behind, Not! There may be some of the old generations in those states that have. Nostalgia for the old Soviet Union, but not the younger generation Latvians and Estonians and certainly not the Poles!
You do realize modern borders in eastern and central Europe are relatively new right? before WW2 territories of predominant ethnic populations without a strong crown were passed constantly between the powerful imperial houses like Russia, Polish-Lithuania, Austro-Hungary, the Holy Roman Empire and France. Many of the small states we know today only existed as the ethnic groups scattered in the contested territories, without a state or land of their own. When those territories changed hands, either by conquest, treaties, or personal unions, it was usually followed by waves of migrations. That's why you see so many ethnic russians on eastern Ukraine, or poles on western Ukraine.
But I guess it's easier for you to resort to conspiracy theories about Russian world domination aspirations.

What a beautiful 2 minute fragment of an interview.
Interesting to notice, they seem to look on reactions in social media... Possibly also noting the names; and thus getting a count who are somewhat reliable citizens, and who are a potential fifth column... Even if in a democratic state its allowed to speak practically whatever you wish, but if you have a situation where an invasion is fully possible, the wise one looks up if you have in the country people you may suspect of welcoming the aggressor. Not even to mention; who do you are if you dont condemn atrocities, but sooner like them?
Just getting to the end of Anthony Beevor's _The Second World War._ Anyone who imagines that speaking Russian, calling yourself Russian or supporting the Russian leadership is going to do them one bit of good if the Orcs invade needs to read some history too.
Latvia seems pretty tolerant of their Russian speaking minority citizens. In Russia or China, these people may easily be deported, or incarcerated, or if they are really trouble-makers they might fall from a high hospital window or get hit by a car or suffer some other sort of tragic end. But not in Latvia, yet. But read about WW2 and the movement back and forth first of the Soviet Red army, then their eviction by the NAZI Wermacht, and then in 1944 the retreat of German Army Group North into the Courland Pocket. Each time the region changed hands, there was often very violent repercussions for one segment or another.
But Latvia is being careful, as if there were to be a noticeable backlash against the RU speaking in the region, that could be a pretext for Russia to claim sovereignty and invade there too? Would they push into a NATO nation? Maybe not until the victory is secured by Trump in 2025 or 2026 in Ukraine.
Trump will not secure a Victory neither i n Election nor in battlefield. WTF you talkin' about Willis?
Democracies are usually more tolerant of different cultures and languages within their borders.

It is called diversity of opinions, just like on Gaza: some people support Israel, some people support Palestinians. This is normal in a democracy.
There is also thing called ethnic solidarity, has been practiced by many ethnic groups in many countries. For example, by Armenians in California, this is why Nancy Pelosi visited Armenia just before mid-term elections in 2022. Or by Vietnamese in Sydney, Australia.
You speak of democracy, but the Russians do not know what that is and never had true democracy since the election of Boris Yeltzin a long, long time ago. Their opinions are not of their own, only words of propagandists being parroted over and over to enslave the masses into racial superiority.

Early reports indicated the massive expansion of the Mariupol cemetery to the west of the city as Russia began to disguise the atrocity it had committed. An underestimated 10,324 civilians were believed to have been killed during the indiscriminate shelling which destroyed about 90% of residential properties. Other estimates put this at least 25,000 when included the raped, tortured and summarily executed native inhabitants not able or willing to flee.
Russian developers have been introduced to create a nice fascia to the city and build new homes with sea views. This work has unearthed many new corpses from Russian shelling. But these homes are not intended for the dispossessed Ukrainian inhabitants, who are often shunned and shut out of jobs and benefits, this cut price new housing is for migrants, loyal to the regime and who have no qualms about settling on the graves of those murdered Ukrainians.

Bleating now about the fallout suffered by the people of Ukraine as a consequence of the West's miscalculations is disingenuous in the extreme.
