It isn't THAT mindblowing. Lots of people improvise, and can pull much more lyrrically complex stuff out of their ass. This is wonderfull, but let's not get egoistic and boastfull, it's a song, he's not a god, he's a man.
Well mr Gibsongoblin, he did not write this on the spot, so it is not mindblowing at all. This is a well know old gospel song, for instance sung by Paul Robeson around 1940. For sure Richie Havens knew this gospel song very well in 1969.
@@gijsschubert7901 Don't insinuate that he plagiarized these lyrics because he never claimed to write them. What he actually did was improvise a mind-blowing (original) medley of a couple black spiritual songs after he played for nearly three hours to approximately 1 million people; he improvised this song on his FOURTH encore because he had literally played every song that he considered worth playing. To those who aren't close-minded trolls, it is mind-blowing. "Motherless Child" was performed in the 1870s by The Fisk Jubilee Singers and then recorded by Lois Deppe, Bessie Griffin, Paul Robeson, Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis and even Elvis Presley before Richie sang some of the lyrics in 69; Richie also sang lyrics from "Tell Him What You Want" recorded by The Caravans in 1954! Countless gospel, folk, blues and R&B artists have been mistakenly credited with writing songs they have performed. Your attempt to diminish this mind-blowing performance is ham-fisted at best. Fuck outta here.
Shout to Richie Havens For being the very 1st musician on that Woodstock stage,he is etched in Rock&Roll history forever!!! and also for the creativity to create this music completely on the spot for 100,000 kids seeking that good 'ole liberating FREEDOM!!!
Pure emotion overcoming time. This day of summer 1969 Richie Havens kindle a star light in mankind sky. Is he really gone if his tremendous song ever stay...reminding us our will.
I love this song. Im adopted. Im 55! I wish I could of seen him at Woodstock but I was 1yrs old. I recently found my biological mother and I have three half-brothers this world is a trip!
Much appreciated. Saw him live at a small venue decades ago; Richie and I were the only people moving and rocking. Sad yet memorable joy with connecting to the source. Well done upload. Thank you.
I knew the song with the Woodstock movie ( first song in the movie btw ) long time ago before Django Unchained but of course i was glad to hear it in the movie of Tarantino ✌Tarantino has always very good taste for each soundtrack of his movies 👍

He was the first act opening the show infront of a crowd whos number of people was the size of Boston. I can't imagine the pressure I would be under if it were me !
You can hear the 2nd guitarist and the percussionist much clearer in this than in all the versions with video. It sounds like the audio here was recorded directly from the output feed, which would be the closest you could get to hearing what the audience would've heard
Some times I feel like I needed humanity to teach me humanity. So I could have that love that is me a human being as a human. Because it's been life times of pain and what I needed was to dance

Check out Gay cavalier, a collab he did with great italian guitarist and songwriter/singer pino daniele, really soulful, deep and powerful piece not everybody knows from richie
the fact that he wrote this on the spot and improvised it is completely mind blowing
"That long intro is just me stalling. I couldn't think of anything else to sing!"

My only regret is that I have but one thumbs up to give this song.
Richie could do a lot with one thumb. Check out his guitar style if you don’t know what I mean
My dad saw him at Woodstock in 69. He tears every time he hears this song.
Megan Marie this song rips at me too !
Your dad witness something unique!
And rightfully so. This is a very poignant song.
Date me

Children are being separated from their mothers while on a voyage looking for safety in the land of the free. A long long way from their home.
