- This step-by-step video will teach you how to correctly identify thread pitch and size using calipers, a pitch gauge, and a thread identification guide. Topics covered include a visual guide to individual parts and names (crests, roots, flanks), the difference between tapered (dynamic) and straight (parallel) threads, the purpose of each (plus the need for sealants), followed by proper measurement procedures of both thread types.

Swagelok, Great Content. The animation and explanation were perfectly in sync. Thanks for uploading!
Thank you swagelok, Nice clear and concise video. Please post more. Best of luck.
Nice, easy to understand through this video.
Someone will make a lot of money if they can develop an app that will let your phone camera scan the thread and then give the readout of all it's details without having to use a tool and look it up in a book. Guess I am just that lazy.
You can Do it!
Great information. The demo at first is showing someone applying Teflon tape backwards. Much easier to unroll the tape with tension. Thank You for the video.
Very good video easy to understand what thread pitch and sizing determine.
Thank you for a straight forward presentation
YOU ARE FANTASTIC....!!!I DIDNT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE ON TAPPERED AND PARALLEL ONES..NOR THE PROCEDURE TO FIND IT OUT EASILY...!!AND EVEN WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT HOW TO DETERMINE THE NOMINAL DIAMETER ON TAPERED...I USED TO MEASURE AT THE EDGE...!!THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Linus has changed so much
I threaded my first pipe today but the original ones that were already done that I bought were 20mm on the outside and is being sold as DN15 from China. The pipe that I bought at the home depot afterwards is 21.3mm
Used 1/2" die and wrench with oil but it was not easy. Do you think I'm killing my die or is the 20mm not the normal standard?
After I threaded the pipe it does fit although the outside differs more than 1mm. It's more for a Steampunk artwork so it doesn't have to do something important like heating.
Great thanks
Well-made.
So a 10x1.25 tap that comes in a tap and die set is different than the tap used for thread repair?
is there any place that i can take my bolts and get professional to measure them.. I live dallas, TX
So will these thread pitch gauges work on sheet metal and wood screws as well as on machine screws?
many thanks
What is the part number for the thread identifiers. The local swagelok distributor told me that all 3 have to be ordered as a kit and the kit is like $80, I dont really need a digital measuring tool but the guide and thread measuring tools would be super handy. I love swagelok products and I buy swagelok for personal projects and at work for projects.
Thanks uploading vedio
screw pitch gauge is used to check the pitch of the screw at about the range

Hi All,
Anyone know any good books on the basics to advanced information for fasteners?
Fabory's catalogue is pretty good and expansive
Cool !!!
Number of threads over an inch which is then divided by either 1.. or 25.4 (imp or met)... Think this was the solution in the "days or yore".... 🤔😥
Great and simple video
Kindly I need the link for the mentioned ( thread identification guide) to download it

Do you have to add the measurement of a grip in the bolt measurement? How would you know based on reading the measurement of a bolt that the bolt has a grip? Hope I explained myself properly sorry if I didnt.

This is all good information, but what I really want and need is a guide that specifies the thread on each and every Swagelok fitting. What is the thread on a 1 inch VCR male connector? Who knows? I sure as heck don't, and I need to know, like, now.
super
Can you sell me that guide? I need to learned how ti check Npt threads to know if they would fit properly.
What does the 1.5 or 1.25 on the thread mean? For example a 10x1.5, what is the 1.5?
this video is actually quite confusing as he doesnt really make clear what form of measurement is being used at that instant and/or the images that were used are not matching what he is describing like female or male end ?
and to answer your question just incase someone else comes across this M11x1.5 or M10x1.0 is in metric format and the 1.5 is the thread pitch from crest to crest
Trovo questo video molto interessante
Fine. The difficulty is measuring internal threads in dark places...

Oh how convenient
so cheeky the way you throw in your product at the end
Why not , they provided you with a very informative video for free. You are a douche bag limey.
The worst thing i hate is that i do mechanic jobs on american cars in sweden and american sizes are so different than europe standards. So my screws never fit so i always have to specially order a bolt from someone.
Can i use M20 1.5 nut to M20 1.0 bolt?

is m4 - 0.7mm the same as 4mm - 0.7mm ? www.amazon.ca/Metric-Taper-Plug-0-7mm-Pitch/dp/B00ANY5I5A if not, whats the diffrence between these 2?
They are the same. M4 stands for metric 4, which is 4mm. The 0.7mm is the pitch. The difference between the two taps is; one is a taper tap, and the other is a plug tap. A taper tap is pointer than a plug tap. There is a third type of tap called a bottoming tap which is less pointy again. I'm sure a quick google will show you when to use each, but they all tap the same size whole; for an M4 0.7mm bolt.
yup, figured it out :P thanks for the response though !

Didn't discuss coarse vs fine thread.
that's "pitch"
There aren't coarse or fine threads in hydraulics. Your thinking of nuts and bolts.
but female threads? how do we do that

#SWAGLOCK
You dont need a special tool for pitch just calipers. 13 pitch = 13 threads per inch
So what if you're broke and you don't have a caliper and thread pitch tool? Then wtf am I suppose to do, guess?
images don’t match words being spoken
Just go grab the actual screw or fastener and screw it in to confirm.
good.. but he dont know how to put on the ptfe tape..

this is the most un usefull / misleading video ever.
The video explains exactly what the title suggests. So what is your problem?
Stopped watching after the mis use of the dial calipers. Too far inside the jaw for a accurate reading.
