Alpha's hair is driving him nuts as he's been growing it out. It's too the point where it's heavy. He likes his hair up with volume, but it's weighted-down. The bangs are good, but the back is not doing what Alpha likes it to do. In this video men's style, grooming, fitness and lifestyle expert, Aaron Marino of IAmAlphaM, AaronMarino, and Pete & Pedro demonstrates how he trims his own he's using scissors and a comb.
Wash, towel dry (leave damp), and comb into place. He wants to take the bulk out of the back section so he combs the bangs out of the way. He lifts a section of hair and pinches straight up. He simply snips about a 1/4 inch off the very ends and then goes right next to it. Follow the contour of your head. That strip is done. Go behind it and repeat. Once he gets back to the longer and heavier part, he takes a little more off.
The idea is that you go all the way back with tiny and systematic trimming. Perhaps you may have to trim a bit more after styling and checking; however, taking a little off will allow you to do what you want it to do. Alpha uses Pete and Pedro Putty for his styling: versitle, matte, works for short & long hair,and perfect pre-styler. Make sure to work the product all the way down to the root.
Use the hair dryer on the medium setting to blow into place then blow against the grain for volume. Alpha continues to demonstrate. His hair is now doing what he likes it to do. He locks the style into place with a bit more of the Pete and Pedro Putty. Emulsify to activate the hair product and run back into the hair to give it more pop. The trim gave his hair life!

Bit of advice to anyone trying this; do little and often and never cut a huge noticeable bit of hair off to the point where people can see you've had a hair cut.
It's easier if you cut your hair shorter over a few weeks so that people at work etc. won't see an immediate change and it gives your hair chance to naturally blend itself in and gives you chance to assess how it looks on a daily basis and it it needs more cutting off or not.
Also if you have curly/wavy hair, remember that if you pull the hair straight and cut it, it will most likely look shorter than that because your hair will curl back up. So always add extra length for the waves when you snip it

I watched this video yesterday and my 22 year old son didn't want to pay $30 + tip to get his hair cut, he knows I have cut his brothers before, but the style was different. This video was EXTREMELY helpful and I had the assistance of my 26 year old daughter. Together we did a great job. 2:10 its so ridiculously hard for me to cut the hair with scissors on top, everytime either the scissor goes in front of the "targeted" hair or behind them..... Pisses me off so much
i had the same problem figured out later that it was easier doing it with your eyes closed just keep holding the hir in your hand and aim the scissors at the fingers and cut it

My hand-eye coordination is so bad when it comes to doing the scissors and comb technique. My arms get so tired too.
Growing up my family didn't have much money. My dad used to just give me a buzz cut. When I got older and got my first job I went to the barber and got my haircut. Spent $16. Then I realized how much of a waste of money it was. I started experimenting when I was about 16 on how to cut my own hair, first few times were a disaster and I completely fucked up. But over the years I got better and better, now I'm 22 years old and have have almost never been to a barber. I can do everything, fades, undercut, regular cut, edging etc.
My tip for all beginners - just do it, if u mess up it ok, wear a hat for a few days, you will eventually get better and you wallet will thank you.
Plus you'll save so much time which you can never get back. Cheers.

I cur my own hair all the time. I usually do quite a good job. I wasn't paying attention to my clipper settings when starting my first fading process and totally "JACKED UP" my freaking DOOOO! At that point I just had to go with it and fade the zero mistake. It's only hair. Luckily I can still grow it fast!
Aahh not like this. Your hair was already cut. I can cut it myself even when it gets really messy. Just with the scissors and the back as well.

That very first cut you made should serve as a guide for the next cut. When you pick up the next section of hair, you should also pick up a little from the first cut you made. When done properly, you'll see a guide line indicating where to cut so that each section blends in with the previous section and doesn't leave a gap. The first and second cut were ok, the third cut when you said "perfect" was not. You were holding strands from the previous section, but you didn't cut up to it.
Tip: Shears are held by placing the ring finger into the finger grip (i.e. hole) with the finger brace (i.e. finger rest) and only slightly past the first knuckle. The little finger goes on the finger brace and the thumb is inserted only slightly into the thumb grip while cutting. When combing, pull the thumb out of the grip and use it to hold the comb alongside the shears. When you need to make a cut, tuck the comb into the crook of the thumb on the opposing hand, insert the thumb into the thumb grip, make the cut, remove the thumb from the grip and puck up the comb from the opposing hand. The ring finger and little finger will hold the shears in place while combing.
Directions unclear, cut off thumb, am now gripping stub with ring finger and pinky to slow the bleeding.

I cut my hair too but i like to go get haircuts. I sometimes use a 5mm or 3 mm or 7 mm on top. Then a zero on sides and back. I like a little length on top and short on back and sides. Your hair looks blackish brown. Nice video Aaron

Great stuff, brotha! I'm a long time fan. While I'm here (able to get in this comment before the herd), I wanted to bring up an idea you brought up in a previous Q&A. You mentioned that you're not a car guy and can't speak or make a video that caters to us gear-centric gents. I feel like you dropped the ball on what could have been a really cool video. For instance, and I would argue this, every true gentleman SHOULD at least care about their car enough to keep it clean. You could mention how to keep your car tidy so that when a spicy senorita comes along she's not sitting in between half filled water bottles and a half eaten sandwich. Some gentleman could really use something like this!

FYI: a tip is to style your hair up (spikes) then use your scissors to cut straight down (vertically, perpendicular to the top of your head) which will add more texture

My ears are farther out than normal, which I was insecure about for some years but then I decided to just go with it and own it. Confidence makes you look handsome, facial characteristics are a bonus.

Yo I have the same problem, mine is quite big and has a dent in it so it bends half way, making it look pretty crap. I'd say I'm still insecure about it but I've learned to embrace it and go with it because you can't really do anything about it. It's like living next to your enemy, leave it alone and it will leave you alone. Honestly, the more you notice it, the more you'll be insecure about it (and struggle with the problems that come with it) but you have to realise that people may only notice it a couple of times before they get used to it and don't care much about it. If you have supportive friends then they'll tell you the same!

trim the sides much shorter than the top section of your head, if it is too spiky at the top, just cut it short :)

Angelo I've got the same thing going on, I can say from personal experience that when I grew out my hair for a year I was in the awkward stage for like 6 months. Damn sides won't slick back like those classic comb over hairstyles. I ended up looking like those damn anime characters with spiky big hairstyles for nearly a year lol. Anyways, long hair wasn't for me.

Angelo LMAO. Same here man. There's nothing u can do about it. Trust me. I've done tons of research myself. The only thing u can do is to keep the sides really short, that way you'll look good. If u decided to leave it long enough to let the hair fall, it will be too long by then. I've tried it. Just keep the side short and the top part medium to long, you'll look fine.
