Thanks for another great vid Paul. Tbh, I think Laney have done great as to not invest too much into the IR department -thus keeping the cost down. I for one don't need this , as I'll be using it through a cab. But it's good to know that this functions is there, and also, the option IS there to turn it off if you want to use your own stuff. The people who use the plugin/IR route have probably already invested in that tech, so will be using those anyway. Laney have given us the best of both worlds! On a side note - I'm gutted no one has these in stock yet ! I'm eagerly awaiting end of the month !

One. This is a beautifully pedantic and subjective "problem" that really doesn't need addressing
Two. I love you for addressing it seriously and scientifically, and bless your community for caring about these relatively tiny but all important differences in tone, using an inexpensive amp/DI. You're all doing the Dark Lord's work.
And... Three. This one is tldr, I get it. But I would love someone to explain to me if there's a real difference between an IR and a very sophisticated EQ profile. I presume when you put a sound through a physical speaker and microphone, there's more than just amplitude differences in different wavebands, you'll get distortions in various zones and regional phasing effects and so forth, that I obviously don't have the grasp on acoustics to describe.
Point being; cycling through a bunch of IR cabs, like this, what am I hearing, apart from the changes in EQ profile? If I were to somehow able to flatten the frequency-amplitude profiles of two cab IRs, what would be left and would I still hear the differences?
Could you use a compressor, envelope filter, EQ, multiband distortion, etc, to do the same and it's that what an IR is doing?
...I literally can't find the answers online.

Wow now that's a big question. I remember Helix guys using an EQ block instead of an IR to great effect so I asume the answer to that is yayer. As per the distortion zones and amplitubes erm......sorry biddy that's way above my guitar monkey pay grade hahahhaha so sorry man. 🤘🧟‍♂️🤘

@@PaulGlover well it's above mine too so I'm trying to describe something I don't have words for.
I was thinking you probably get the equivalent of a multiband distortion with different equipment; not only are certain frequencies filtered out, reduced or boosted, but each band is also shaped.
So, while some frequencies come through almost entirely "clean" from X speaker or Y amp head, there presumably will be some which are more compressed, or distorted, maybe even time/phase modulated?
So my question was really whether the IRs "know" what they're doing, and if they sort of "fit" a series of transformations in each frequency band, like splitting your signal across many parallel chains of basic effects pedals. Or are they the product of pure machine learning?
      ...I could Google this, huh?
Thanks for taking my idle speculation seriously, anyway

@johnbehan1526 ots mind.blowing to me man how a click as a wav file can alter so much.....if anyone here can help please chime in?

IR is an effect that is applied over time, while EQ is a 'flat' modifier. You give it signal (impulse) and that triggers a mechanical movement in the speaker (response). IR tries to follow that action more closely, instead of just applying an EQ curve which is only good to get rid of the 'bees' when using distortion (but otherwise very inferior sounding) in my opinion

I thought the internal DI sounded fine. Just a different, slightly darker flavor than the other IRs you used. Could probably just add a touch of treble with the tone controls if wanted. Great video!

Own emulation very good, not too bright and overall tone really Laneyish tight type!

I don't think there are any internal IRs in this pedal. I believe they use just regular analog frequency compensation, and it sounds correspondingly. For IR you need a dedicated IR player.

Cab emulation is what it's called. Its not an IR loader so what it is is all you get.

@@PaulGlover yes, that is what I mean, but in the video it was called an "internal IR" or smth. It is just an analog cab emulation, which is just EQ filter.

@SergeiVlassov sounds like for most people cab emulation or IR mean the same thing and are not really to bothered what it's called or how it works to be honest. I was also using outbound IRs and not cab emulation so didn't want to go it to to much detail for no reason I the video. They do the same job to most people so went with that man.

@@PaulGlover yes, I often notice people do this mistake. So as a scientist, I try to correct every time :) because IR (Impulse Response) is a very specific technology. It can be used also for e.g. reverbs. Analog cab sim technology have nothing in common with IR technology. Two completely different words.

Thanks for the videos on this Paul, you've helped me decide to pull the trigger on one of these!
I assume you can run the speaker output and emulated XLR out simultaneously? As I'll be running it through an Ironheart 2x12 but wanting to run it into the desk for IEMs
