Young love, heartbreak, and the passage of time. All set to the wonderful music of Michel Legrand in Jacques Demy's soulful, surreal musical comedy. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg stars Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo as two French youths, Genevieve and Guy, who live in the coastal city of Cherbourg. They're in love, they plan to get married, Guy will open a gas station, and they'll name their child Francois. But sometimes life doesn't go the way you planned.
Funny, heartfelt, and unforgettable, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is considered one of the greatest musicals ever created. It catapulted Catherine Deneuve into international stardom. It is the second in what is considered director Jacques Demy's "Romance" trilogy.
Also starring: Anne Vernon, Marc Michel, and Ellen Farner

It's a cinema opera. Like Opera, mundane dialogue is a recitative. To get things started, ordinary garage workers' dialogue is a jazz recitative to get us into the Opera mode of this film . Brilliant.
Mozart used the measurements of a room to kick off The Marriage of Figaro.
The haunting "I will wait for you" becomes the main leit motif. Each character also has a leit motif ( theme melody) worked in musically to create and recall emotions . I could go on and on and we need to because this is cinematic opera that sets this film apart.
The photography is very atmospheric with thematic colour tonesvechoed in the sets and the clothes.
The train pulling out is heartbreaking, the emotional turning of the film and their lives. He is just pulled away leaving her alone as the distance increases between them.
The last scene set in snow (coldness) contrasting with interior warmth of the new family brings the film to a tearful or lump-in-the-throat as once again the car with her and their daughter pulls away into the cold night. The theme music swells as the the camera pulls upward .
I have seen this film many times and there's always tears in my eyes.
The script, the narrative power (great director, filming, editing), the throbbing emotive jazz soundtrack and the heart ripping natural acting make this film go to my top ten list.
you promised a director called Jacques!
A gorgeous film, bravo.
Thank you! Glad to deliver

Joke aside, Lola is my personal favourite. I had some issues with musical as a teenager, that's the reason I've been avoiding his musicals.
After seeing his movies, I'd recommend watching the documentary made by Agnes Varda on Jacques (forgot the title)
Thanks! Any excuse to watch another Anouk Aimee film 😍
Should have had at least one of them shed a tear at the end after meeting each other.
Here's an instance where I'd disagree! The characters have moved on with their lives, or tell themselves they've made peace with their decisions. It's not their place to weep, but ours to weep bitterly for them, and for our misplaced youths. The more stoic and adult and in control they are, the more we are made children and feel out of control and breakdown.
😂 that a good effort to pronounce it!!! (The G is silent…)
Pleeeeaaassee do Peau D'ane!! We need this!
The entire movie was dubbed, as none of the actors were singers.
Yo la ví en 1969, con mi novia, después fue mi esposa en México, el nombre de la primera canción que se escucha por favor, creo que es, las cosas que dijimos
Good effort to pronounce it!!! (The G is silent…)
