The joy-cons WERE sort of drifting in the commercial which seems like it has 2 meanings; one showing the mouse like feature of the new joy-cons and lightly joking about their old joy-con issues. Hopefully Hall Effects sticks.

@V8chump there's also the more compact, rounded kart designs, Bowser's design seems to take cues from older SNES-era artwork, Donkey kong looks more like his movie style, the princesses no longer wear a biker outfit when riding bikes, and the boost pads are longer!
It’s all consumer electronics though. If you go into mass manufacturing in China, months ahead of announcing your product, it WILL be leaked. Nintendo should have foreseen this, I would have loved to learn about the console directly from them, but it’s a problem of their own making.

The only way it will break is if you put the joycons in backwards. It doesn't even make sense that it's a worry for people. The joy cons don't slide down they're magnetized into the system.

What I genuinely hope is they encourage as many games as possible to get enhancement patches. Doesn't need remasters, just a lot more games running slightly higher settings, framerate and resolution.

I think Nintendo have played it well. Despite all the leaks and the accuracy of some of the most recent ones an understated reveal makes sense. We are now all hanging on the next event for the spec and the games...which keeps the Nintendo interest going. Great advertising means keeping the brand name front and centre and maintains Interest
Including Mario Kart was a mistake . It really doesn’t look like a generational upgrade in terms of graphics. The increased power in the Switch 2 is the main incentive to upgrade from the original, and Mario Kart made it look only slightly more powerful than the Switch. I don’t even think Mario Kart *needs* amazing graphics, but they muddied the waters for the main selling point of Switch 2 by showing this as the very first glimpse of the console’s power. Hopefully they won’t wait until April to give more information on the other games coming to Switch 2.

With the general lack of classic Nintendo gimmicks this time around, the graphics are more important than usual to convince people to upgrade. It doesn’t make sense to use Mario Kart as the first showcase of Switch 2 graphics and gameplay, at all.
As far as becoming confusing for casual consumers I think the "2" is great at trying to avoid a Wii U situation however the issue I foresee is the lack of color and logo separation from OG Nintendo Switch. Same as the Wii U reveal where they just slapped a blue U to the same Wii (same gray color) logo.
I'm guessing one reason they put the April 2 Direct far enough out, is just so they could have time to finalize pricing for everything. With the upcoming new tariffs being placed on foreign imports here in the US, they probably need time to see how that will affect the cost of everything.
It's a (in)convenient second reason to do so. The main reason remains producing enough units to drown out scalpers, and it looks like that schedule moved to the right a bit.
Well Nintendo does have an american branch. Tariff would only affect any systems produced outside the country; if the american branch manufactures them, no tariff applies. Tariffs are weird.

Yeah the bezels seemed to be really thin initially, with the screen off, but when it's on its clear they're still pretty substantial and there's just a thick black border around the screen. Then again, that'll inevitably be upgraded in future iterations of the system.

The play here is to not blow out the wallet of consumers unless your product is the shiz. Unfortunately, that means an LED screen. Thinner bezels would likely lead to an easier point of failure re: new Joy-Con connection method. OLED screen would be really great to have initially, however if it pushes the Switch 2 to competing directly with a current Steam Deck (or even a ROG Ally) pricewise, it's dead in the water. They could have pulled a Nvidia and just upcharged us for grandiose reasons, but I'd rather not see that.
my uneducated, gut guess is for recolored or themed switches/joycons is that they going to recolor the housing of the joycons, but the red and blue accents are going to be constant for all joycons
I realized something.... The mouse functionality could be used to have a joystick on one side and the mouse on the other. That is going to feel interesting and hopefully good❤️
Probably the biggest implementation for this would be for Splatoon. Many people struggle with the gyro aiming, and stick controls don't quite match that precision. Hopefully "mouse" controls open up the series more for more people!
Nintendo will never go back to a dedicated non-mobile console. It’s going to be a progression of this general format until they move onto to AR/VR. So the internals and games are going to be the main thing to be excited for going forward.
Confirmed backwards compatibility was all i needed to see. I'm completely sold on S2. All the extra features and games we'll see at a later date are just icing on the cake. Gimme!

It's great to hear that the Switch 2 has finally been announced! I haven't looked into any leaks either, so I'm not sure about the specs. Personally, all I really want is a bigger screen and an OLED display or something similar. I still have the original Switch, not the OLED model.
As someone who hasn’t stayed on top of the leaks, it does seem like a nice bump and I think once we know more details, it’ll be more exciting. And I agree the name just works for casual gamers.

The joycons having mouse functionality is a genius solution to the problem of porting Wii games. Sure there's gyro controls but you have to recaliberate them frequently

I was there when the Nes launched. Now i feel old. Been a Nintendo loyalist ever since. In the PS1/N64 era some friends of mine tried to convince me to get PS1 for my 18th birthday instead of N64. Who is this grandma everybody always talks about getting confused at the games store? I would have been thrilled if my grandma bought me a single video game in my life, even if it was for the wrong console. Anything but another set of flannel bedsheets or a decorative wooden armadillo.
Long time follower, first time commentor. A few things possibly, the top usb could be used for two possible things. Firstly, to transfer data from your old Switch and also link up to another Switch, like the old days of the Gameboy Link Cable. The new Mario Kart looks very similar, but is that an actual course, or is that an overworld? A stylish Switch with more bells and whistles is what Switch owners are looking for. Added functionality like the mouse function, which is definitely a thing now since the trailer and that mysterious C button is still unknown to a certain extent. Riding the wave of popularity the Switch still has is Nintendo's plan for this next iteration. I'm excited for the games and hopefully the power it gives to 3rd Party developers.
I think people forget how much more there was to the Wii U's flop then the name. The marketing was unclear in other ways, and beyond that, it launched with New Super Mario Bros. Every game it had in between its massive droughts had cheeper, arguably better versions on the 3ds. Not to mention the wii itself wasn't exactly the same hot stuff it was at launch by 2012. And yes, the name was dumb.
Wii u was nintendo not advertising it at all. They better do an extensive ad campaign with this. Use some of that switch money to get this console out.
I think its fascinating and exciting the Switch 2 is hinting at using the Joycons like a mouse just like the leaks said. Can you imagine if we get something like Mario Paint on the Switch 2? Like what if you the physical one came with Mario Paint themed joycons. That would be amazing.
The reason for the direct in April is simply ‘business’. In theory, Nintendo stock should rise with the announcement today. Ideally, leading to a decent final quarter. By then doing the full announcement in April, they get a second bump at the beginning of a new fiscal year.

I’ll never forget my grandma rolling the dice in like 95 on a game boy pocket and Pokémon blue. A decision that changed my life forever lol 😂 my grandparents were hop with video games until N64 days. My parents fell off in the ps2 / dvd era 😂 I think my kids appreciate having a tec savvy dad I still blow their minds with stuff at 10 & 12 😂
When I first saw the trailer I thought the release date was April 2nd - but that’s just a direct date. So switch 2 coming out in August ? September? Who knows.

It's great to hear that the Switch 2 has finally been announced! I haven't looked into any leaks either, so I'm not sure about the specs. Personally, all I really want is a bigger screen and an OLED display or something similar. I still have the original Switch, not the OLED model.
As someone who hasn’t stayed on top of the leaks, it does seem like a nice bump and I think once we know more details, it’ll be more exciting.
And I agree the name just works for casual gamers.

The joycons having mouse functionality is a genius solution to the problem of porting Wii games. Sure there's gyro controls but you have to recaliberate them frequently

The one thing that was curious to me was, the screen’s bezels look smaller than the original, but when Mario kart was shown, the bezels seemed way bigger. Wonder if there was some screen cropping happening?
I was there when the Nes launched. Now i feel old. Been a Nintendo loyalist ever since. In the PS1/N64 era some friends of mine tried to convince me to get PS1 for my 18th birthday instead of N64. I stood by Nintendo and chose N64 and didn't regret it one bit! They were calling N64 a babys toy. Screw em. I knew what i wanted.
Now we just gonna know the Price of switch 2. Can't believe they actually called it that. Time to start saving up!

Who is this grandma everybody always talks about getting confused at the games store? I would have been thrilled if my grandma bought me a single video game in my life, even if it was for the wrong console. Anything but another set of flannel bedsheets or a decorative wooden armadillo.

Long time follower, first time commentor. A few things possibly, the top usb could be used for two possible things. Firstly, to transfer data from your old Switch and also link up to another Switch, like the old days of the Gameboy Link Cable. The new Mario Kart looks very similar, but is that an actual course, or is that an overworld? A stylish Switch with more bells and whistles is what Switch owners are looking for. Added functionality like the mouse function, which is definitely a thing now since the trailer and that mysterious C button is still unknown to a certain extent. Riding the wave of popularity the Switch still has is Nintendo's plan for this next iteration. I'm excited for the games and hopefully the power it gives to 3rd Party developers.
I think people forget how much more there was to the Wii U's flop then the name. The marketing was unclear in other ways, and beyond that, it launched with New Super Mario Bros. Every game it had in between its massive droughts had cheeper, arguably better versions on the 3ds. Not to mention the wii itself wasn't exactly the same hot stuff it was at launch by 2012.
And yes, the name was dumb.
Wii u was nintendo not advertising it at all. They better do an extensive ad campaign with this. Use some of that switch money to get this console out.

I think its fascinating and exciting the Switch 2 is hinting at using the Joycons like a mouse just like the leaks said. Can you imagine if we get something like Mario Paint on the Switch 2? Like what if you the physical one came with Mario Paint themed joycons. That would be amazing.

The reason for the direct in April is simply ‘business’.
In theory, Nintendo stock should rise with the announcement today. Ideally, leading to a decent final quarter. By then doing the full announcement in April, they get a second bump at the beginning of a new fiscal year.
They'll do a colour way of orange and blue as an alternative
NS2 is what Tears of the Kingdom was to Breath of The Wild, a natural and very welcome evolution. April can't come soon enough.

I’m chuffed, even the April 2nd date for the Direct doesn’t bother me as Nintendo has finally announced it now.

When I first saw the trailer I thought the release date was April 2nd - but that’s just a direct date. So switch 2 coming out in August ? September? Who knows.

That Mariokart 9 foorage is definitely not final, unless a LOT of leaks are wrong at the very least they're going to add raytracing before the game releases.
