    Sounds sick, this was absolutely worth the wait. Phil Collins actually recorded In The Air Tonight using an SSL talkback mic, which is what gave the drums that incredibly compressed sound. Love it!

    It's funny cause you're right about how they would record drums first and then cymbals, but now you'll have other youtubers trying to figure how was someone able to play the beat with a hi hat, snare, and cymbal at same time. They'll literally say stuff like, "they used 3 sticks." 🤭

    Seeing how drums were recorded in 3 separate drums, I all of a sudden do not feel that bad that I record my finger drumming with tom/snare first, then hi-hat, and then other overdub, crash, ride overdubs. Turns out I was doing the right thing (sort of) all along.
    Lovely vid!

      And Prince was on record saying that he was influenced by what The Cocteau twins had done with drum machines and was obsessed with the drum sounds they achieved (which were run through guitar amplifiers and recorded to beef them up and other techniques that drove stuffy engineers of the time mad).

    Great stuff, Jake. I think people forget that the most important thing when recording drums is the actual drum and the raw sound. No amount of processing is gonna save a badly tuned kit, or inconsistent volume.
    Also, can you talk about avoiding getting your hihat sound into the snare mic, i always encourage drummers not to slam the hihat. You snare sounds damn clean.

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  3 роки тому +2

      You're right! I always try to stress this as much as I can. Get the drums sounding good for the song, then worry about the processing. RE: hihat ... I just try to play it softer and also position the mic so it rejects a lot of hihat.

    Great video! super informative. As a rock drummer who grew up in the 80s, I think the ultimate drum sound is from KISS' 1982 album, Creatures of the Night. You don't have to like the band, but there is no denying the thunderous and heavy sound that Eric Carr delivered. Give it a listen...I dare you to tell me that the drums on that record are not some of the best you have heard! :) Keep on rocking.
