The drums on the original recording is YAMAHA prototype kit made of Jacaranda timber, and it's in the Rhythm! Discovery Center located in Indianapolos.
I am a bit shocked about the reverb. I've heard this song a million times, danced to it into oblivion. But I never realised that there is so much reverb on the entire drum mix!
Jessica is amazing on this one, and all in this series. It’s one thing to “play the best,” but she always nails the nuances as well. THAT is the ticket. More Jessica!
Was the exact video I was looking for but it just makes you realise the mix that goes into the instruments, demonstrating why it’s so iconic. Thank you for the samples and a very interesting breakdown.
That was awesome! Question: what did you have on the top of the snare, on the right hand side? It looked like a little sponge or something that flew up on the hit, and fell back down afterwards. I would like to know what that was. Thanks!
Sorry we forgot to mention that in the video - the tin is just taped to the drum to deaden the resonance of the top head a bit, not unlike the classic wallet or MoonGels.
Great sound, but wrong reverb. It definitely was an original Ecoplate with some predelay in front, back in the days. Bruce told me this, when I met him in the mid 90ies.
@@lartisan6274 I don’t know about how long soundchecks and tracking took, but I know from Bruce that he did really many many mix revisions (91 here) for Michael, but more often than not, Michael decided to use one of the first three mixes that Bruce showed him, in the end. So I’d guess it took not much time to dial in that snare. I think part of the magic really lies in the great playing and tuning of that particular instrument. BTW, hihat mic was a M160 ribbon, as far as I remember, with a Pultec HF boost behind it. Also quite sure that Bruce wouldn’t have used AKG 451 as overheads here. More likely KM56 or U67. Nothing bad about 451, though, Al Schmitt used those a lot.
This was fascinating! How many times have I heard this song and not given it much thought! Have you considered getting the drum sounds on King’s X’s Brendan O’Brien- produced album Dogman? They are huge and fun, my favorite drum sound in fact!
I absolutely loved this! Way to explain everything with such detail. I know nothing about mixing or anything like that and I was able to follow along. Loved it 🤘🏽 would you guys do Seven Days by sting? I really wanna know how to get some crispy drum tones like that ☺️
Hi. I'm getting the following when I follow the link to the samples. "Sorry, this page isn't available." and I'm not seeing the samples on the Free Samples page
Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” drum sound: Tony Thompson playing a Yamaha drum kit, in a stone-walled live room. He is hitting the drums HARD. Heavily gated reverb on kick and snare. Couple of room mics as well, also gated, facing the stone wall. You could also use some corrugated sheet metal as your “stone” walls around the kit. Try it!
First of all i love this kind of content of yours and i learn too many things. In here as a MJ fan i should say there are something missing. Espacially on the snare sound. I can imagine how hard it is to get so similar sound. I say this because in the other concept you guys were very very close than this. Thank you for the all videos. Btw i guess Bruce used SM7 on snare and vocal in this song but maybe i remember it wrong. My favourite is Motown Video :)
The lawsuit alleged that Plaid obtained more financial data than was needed when securing these transactions and that Plaid also obtained login credentials through its interface, known as "Plaid Link," which had the look and feel of the user's own bank account login screen, when users were actually providing their login credentials directly to Plaid.
Fun fact: The Strokes used this snare sound as an example for drum sounds on their earlier records. This series continues to be great!
The drums on the original recording is YAMAHA prototype kit made of Jacaranda timber, and it's in the Rhythm! Discovery Center located in Indianapolos.
Mad how much of the overall sound is actually straight up just the cabasa.
The intro to this song is what I use to test audio systems.
Keep waiting for the classic bass line to come in 😅
And those keyboards 😲
Yes, so true!!
Yes! These kids need to know how bass is supposed to sound in a mix
Du du dum du du dum dum du du dum du du dum dum... :D
One of the funkiest basslines ever written

One of the most iconic drums sounds, if not of all time. What a track. Would love to see more MJ videos.
There’s a big tom fill in the chorus of Billie Jean that I was hoping to see some detail on. But you two nailed the core sound.
Always got to play that part live!
Great sounding repro. Shocked by the 'no compression' - that's a cool insight.
It sounds like No Doubt used the “ Billie Jean” beat for their song “ Hella Good”! Classy drum groove!
that snare isolation device is pure genius!
Best series on this channel.
Awesome video really amazing
I love this series. It encourages the best recording tip ever: just try stuff. ❤❤❤❤❤
You never mentioned that the drummer is Leon Ndugu Chanceler (RIP).
Man, y’all are so cool!! I love this series!! ❤
I always thought this was a drum machine. Very cool!
It was
@@cvltzilla no it wasn’t
@@riloperro Ndugu Chancler was a drumming machine!
It was recorded to a drum machine though
@@cvltzilla No. It was a drummer.
How about the drum intro to “Lust for Life” by Iggy Pop, it’s probably the most recognizable drum intro!
You nailed it !
For 30 years I’ve thought this was a drum machine :o
The Cabasa blew my mind! Always thought it was just super spicy hats... of course, its a Cabasa!
That was awesome! Question: what did you have on the top of the snare, on the right hand side? It looked like a little sponge or something that flew up on the hit, and fell back down afterwards. I would like to know what that was. Thanks!
yeah Reverb, what's up with the Altoids tin? kind of shitty not to mention that.
Sorry we forgot to mention that in the video - the tin is just taped to the drum to deaden the resonance of the top head a bit, not unlike the classic wallet or MoonGels.
Thank you for this, so much information I needed the answer too. 🙏
Great sound, but wrong reverb. It definitely was an original Ecoplate with some predelay in front, back in the days. Bruce told me this, when I met him in the mid 90ies.
yes, the original sound more reverb and more punchy, i guess Bruce worked many weeks for this snare

NAILED IT!
I'd love some ELO especially anything from the album Time. I like Jeff Lynne's giant sounds
i love these .. can u also do that fat warm dry drum sound of Al Green .. thanx
This was fascinating! How many times have I heard this song and not given it much thought!

Great job, guys!!
A piece of pool noodle is good for isolating snare & hi hat mics (that’s to Sylvia Massey for that tip!).
Ross Garfield aka “The Drum Doctor" probably knows what kit they used.
I absolutely loved this! Way to explain everything with such detail. I know nothing about mixing or anything like that and I was able to follow along. Loved it 🤘🏽 would you guys do Seven Days by sting? I really wanna know how to get some crispy drum tones like that ☺️
Very impressive! You got super close to the sound!

Give this link a try instead: reverb.com/software/samples-and-loops/reverb/3793-bright-80s-billie-jean-style-drums
How about a Muse drum sound? Supremacy maybe? That has an amazing drum sound
I love consistency..as per usual, the "sample pack" file isn't in the correct format... 🤦♂
Groove so tight I can even hear the bass
Please recreate Steely Dan „Babylon Sisters”
lovely
The incomparable
Acrolite!!
Also S Club 7 don't stop moving!
Curious about the mint tin on snare, is there an added rattle inside?
I’d love to hear you guys do the Strokes
Wouldn't Ndugu have been playing Paiste 602 sound edge hats at this time?
Jess is the boss!
Keep waiting for the classic moonwalk and the robotic dance.
Yeah
Good job.
Pixies Surfa Rosa drum sound would be great.
just add a little bit of satin & Valhalla vintage to it :D
I'd love to hear Mac Demarco drum sounds!
They actually used a Yamaha Recording Custom snare
Why is gating the snare mic not ok? Just wondering why it’s better to isolate it instead
Pretty sure it’s a steel plate reverb. Can’t remember the company but it wasn’t a emt
Could you make a episode about bowie's let's dance drum sound?🙏

So it was like four mics?
norm says right a lot
I assume the filter on the kick 421 was wide open?
Please recreate Michael Jackson's I can't help it please it's from the off The Wall album 1979
Can you please do Reba McR Fancy drums sound form 1980 Drums Sound of country music
Snare has a lower pitch in the MJ track
Wao 😯
can you do El Scorcho by Weezer?
I thought this was made by a LinnDrum

The missing ingredient: Ndugu Chancler playing drums. ... : (
You may have nailed the production technique but everything seems higher pitched.
Bass line

nice try.. but it still doesn't sound like any close to Billie Jean.. I can recreate it easy with AD2 or Superior Drummer 3..
I feel vindicated because I never use compression on drums, just tape saturation and a bit of EQ
If these two were more stoned they would be asleep
😅
uh no, I think it's just the easy going midwest vibe common in that region
So basically, you used old socks and underpants to get the authentic muffled sound?
