Nodded in approval at Just Cause 2. What a great time. Didn't feel the same with 3 & 4. And man, keep at FighterZ! I'm so happy to see the autocombos and dash working to keep people playing. Fighting games are magical, if dense and impenetrable to some. Happy you're finding the fun, even in defeat. All of these picks are great. Gotta check out Vampire Smile & Danganronpa. Great video dude! Love how you articulate everything c:

dang, I remember downloading that 30 minute Just Cause 2 demo back in the day and replaying it over and over again

Not sure I'll name every one of them here, but I can say a few of the games that probably had the biggest impact on me this past decade were Xenoblade Chronicles, the Gravity Rush series, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, and Fire Pro Wrestling World.
With the first three listed, either the cast or world grabbed me in such a way that I still think about them even in the new decade, Kat from GR and Dana from Ys in particular. And it helps that both are fun to play.
Fire Pro was for me, to a degree, what Dragon Ball FighterZ was to you, something I took a chance on knowing it's reputation for being simple to learn yet difficult to master, and it wound up being my most played game last year. It's been a long time since I've sunk my teeth into a wrestling game the way I have FPWW, and it's the gameplay and shockingly deep customization that's kept me coming back. Funny thing is, there's a whole other aspect to creation in the game I haven't yet touched, and it's kind of one of those cases where I know I'm playing it differently than others do. But hey, so long as I'm enjoying it, right?
I could probably list Just Cause 2, as well. I can't say any open world game has touched it for me since.

You are so underrated. Your analytical style really speaks to me. Anyway,
    1. Xenoblade Chronicles
    2. Pikmin 3
    3. Celeste
    4. Devil Survivor Overclocked
    5. Breath of the Wild

Pikmin 3 really is just about the best 15-20 hours of fun you can have on the Wii U. It's got a lot in common with Luigi's Mansion 3, actually. No gimmicks, just perfect refinement of gameplay mechanics and total improvement over its predecessors.

Thanks for talking about the Dishwasher series in the past those games are CRIMINALLY underrated.

"It's compelling with every use, but it also doesn't invalidate basic cars bikes and transports"
That pretty much sums up my biggest problem with Just Cause 3. In the endless hours I've poured into the game, I've never really felt inclined to actually use a vehicle. It always feels like a waste of time since the zip line, wingsuit, parachute thing always feels faster.

    • @Antiformed
      @Antiformed 4 роки тому +1

Saints Row IV also had that issue. Once you get superpowers you will never ever touch a vehicle again which makes them totally pointless. Gat Outta Hell takes this a step further and just gives you wings, not even bothering with cars anymore.

Alex! Ya killed it my man. Surprised by a lot of these picks - didn’t know you liked Sonic that much! Also never heard of that Dishwasher game, but it looked and sounded really cool! I’m glad DBFZ showed up in this list cuz it did and meant a lot to me too. But yeah clean edits (loved the sonic me? Edit) and captivating commentary!

One of the most fun experiences I had in games was playing the JC2 multi-player mod with a friend and getting the entire Nerd3 server on a road trip. All driving together, fighting a few greifers who were in on the fun. It's hard to compare to that.

Great picks. Just Cause 2, that is something the sequels could never get right. Sonic Mania was a huge return for Sonic and I love it!
This makes me wanna reflect on the past decade.

  • @SovernGaming

I definitely need to try out Sonic Mania having never played a Sonic game.
My personal list (top 7 because top 5 is too hard):
Borderlands 2 & Skyrim (these two are tied for the best of the decade for me)
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag (ship combat was too much fun)
Battlefield 4 (after all the patches of course)
Black Ops 2 (some of the best zombies maps ever and most balanced multiplayer)
Overwatch (put more time into this game than any other, but competitive could be so frustrating)
Forza Horizon 4 (best semi-arcade racing game ever?)
A bit FPS heavy, but hey, I can't help what I like.

I'm really curious what the next installment in the danganronpa series is gonna be or is there any sequel at all. Death march club seems to be a spiritual follow-up but so far not much has been revealed.

    • @Antiformed
      @Antiformed 4 роки тому +2

Good or bad, a sequel would trample on the ending of V3, which asks in no uncertain terms, how healthy our obsession with this series was to begin with. I love Danganronpa but the only thing I could maybe get excited for is a UDG2 which simply continues the Komaru/Fukawa storyline past DR3 anime with a new Despair villain. And that's just because I happen to really like the style and characters of UDG. If DR4 did happen it would have to pay some serious respect to the V3 ending to justify its existence.

The director said he's done with the series and left spike chunsoft to make his own studio so if it ever comes back it'll be a long while and probably will look much different

Splatoon and it's sequel, animal Crossing New leaf, those for helping with my depression. Pokemon X for a fantastic memory with me and my Dad. I'm sure there are some other things but those will always come to me first

    My 5.
    1. Dark Souls
    2. Transistor
    3. Persona 4 Golden
    4. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
    5. Nier Automata

For me, the two that come to mind are The World Ends With You (didn't come out in this decade but I played it in 2012 so I'm counting it) and Persona 5. Both of them nailed their sense of style and presentation, while still being icing on the cake for interesting, engaging, and just plain fun gameplay.

Same! I know DR and ZE are not trying to be the same thing, but since the video primarily talked about storytelling in games in general, it feels strange to mention Danganronpa and not Zero Escape (or AI: The Somnium Files).

You made me realize that Dishwasher: Dead Samurai doesn't appear as one of my 360 Arcade games on the One X and that's disappointing. Between it and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World The Game, I'm glad I replaced my 360 with a late model rather than losing it, because there are still some digital gems that I won't be able to bring forward onto the new platform.
Never got around to Vampire Smile, though.
Also, thanks to you, I now have the Danganronpa trilogy on PS4 after snagging them all on sale. Hopefully I'll be getting around to them... ssssooooonnnish?
Good video, man. Nice variety of games, some of which came as a surprise. Looking forward to what you'll be putting out in 2020.

Always crazy to think Ska studios may have never got the needed exposure had it not been for Doritos...
Dishwasher was one of the first games I ever played on the 360. Good way to have started my time on that console and era of gaming.

    Halo Reach
    Super Mario Odyssey
    The Walking Dead Season 1
    Life is Strange
    Smash Ultimate
    Alan Wake
Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

    Pokémon GO
    What Remains of Edith Finch

Layton vs AA was considered pretty mediocre from what I remember, it didn't quite end up being what people were hoping for.
Also in addition to TWD S1 i'd say Wolf Among Us. god i hope the sequel is somehow good.

@@Antiformed haha yeah I agree it's not the best in either franchise. It's just amazing that a Level-5 and Capcom collaborated together. I'm a big fan of both franchises so it's in my top 10 for all the nerdy fan service

My list would have to be (in no particular order)
    -super mario galaxy 2
    -portal 2
    -xenoblade chronicles
    -assassin's creed 2
    -persona 4 golden
    -nier gestalt
    -minecraft
    -undertale
    -night in the woods
    -ori in the blind forest
    -control (honorable mention)

It's very interesting to see what kind of games really got to you. Thanks for sharing man.
I feel the same about fighting games. The only one that I ever willingly really got into was SoulCalibur 6. I'm not sure if another fighter is gonna captivate me like that. Maybe the unreleased Guilty Gear Strive. Or Samurai Shodown, once I play it.
And I agree, Sonic Mania is the most competent of all Sonic games, although I might like a couple of the 3D ones more.

  • @JMDurden
    @JMDurden 4 роки тому

    The Wonderful 101
    Skullgirls
    Double Dragon Neon
    SteamWorld Heist
    Awesomenauts (honorable mention)
I could wax poetic about all of these games and what they've brought to me, but I doubt anyone would have the patience to read long paragraphs on a UA-cam video's comment section.

I wanted to love Danganrompa. Desperately so.
But when I figured out the solution to the first murder within 5 seconds of seeing the murder scene... I just gave up on it. It was in insult to my intelligence. I'm honestly having a heard time understanding how it can be viewed as the benchmark of anything, other than cliches.

Honestly, I find Trigger Happy Havoc to be a weak opening to a great series. But it's kind of necessary to get the most out of the sequels. If it's any incentive, the very first trial of Super Danganronpa 2 is more difficult than even the most difficult trials in DR1.

Only thing I have against Sonic Mania is I cannot stand the Blue Spheres minigame and I just can't get motivated to unlock the extra content where playing it is required.
