Possibly my favourite of the series. I know it’s a bit limited in terms of gameplay, but the storytelling is peak of the series. The writing, the “cinematography” for lack of better words, the pacing. I loved it. That cliffhanger as well man. “History abhors a paradox!”
What a hidden gem of a channel. Fantastic Legacy of Kain videos. Clearly a lot of thought and effort went into this and it shows. Thoroughly enjoying watching these retrospective videos.
I remember seeing Soul Reaver 2 in a store for 50€. At the age of 12 years I had to save up my allowance to be able to buy it. It was the first game I ever bought and at the time I didn't even had a PC so I had to play it at my cousin's place, who was living almost 30 minutes away. For 3 weeks I got home from school, finished my homework in record time and went on that 30 minutes ride with my bicycle to play it for a couple hours, then be home at 8 again
Excellent retrospective video, thanks. Great summary of SR2 and its preceding games. While I liked the new lore that SR2 gave us, I missed the fog-drenched atmosphere and soundtrack of SR1, which stuck out to me when compared to the prettier-looking, but somehow more hollow, SR2.
Thanks a million. My LoK series has been getting a lot of attention recently. Not sure why the algorithm suddenly started pushing it but I'm getting more engagement and subscribers because of it. Thanks a million. Glad you liked the content.
you know how they say it takes at list 5 years of constant video content creation for channel to gain popularity. I ve just got recommendation in my feed and I'm subscribed.
Thanks man, I take a lot of pride on what I do. I wouldn't wanna put out something that I wouldn't be happy to watch myself. As for the sub count, that's just the way yt is unfortunately. It's been jumping up a lot recently though.
@@arkham666 I actually came to your channel after watching Josh Strife Hayes do a retrospective of Soul Reaver and wanted to keep going with the series. I've subbed, and hope you get many more!
Great Retrospective, I agreed with you completely about Soul Reaver combat. A remake SR game would be terrible if it is Soul-like, I think the combat would be better if it is similar to Witcher 3 combat.
After playing Sekiro I can see how the souls formula can translate to a more power fantasy character but I'd hate to see it just for the sake of chasing a trend. Glad you enjoyed the content.
The best way for a LoK remake to do combat would be to maybe model it after the Arkham games. So here is a pair of examples of how combat in a LoK remake could work for Raziel and Kain. Using Raziel first as an example, it is clear that Raziel's time as both a Sarafan priest and a Vampire has acquainted him with many different weapons and how to use them. Raziel is also shown to use a fighting style focused on a rapid flurry of blows to keep his enemy off balance. With that in mind, Raziel's style would be about hitting an enemy with a barrage of attacks, parrying/riposting attacks from other enemies when prompted, and putting down weakened enemies with a coup de grace (different depending on what weapon Raziel is holding/using) before chaining it into the next enemy. Kain's combat would be a variation on what has been used in Jedi:Fallen Order/Jedi:Survivor with the more powerful, tanky, and aggressive Kain having more powerful attacks that send enemies reeling, but his attacks are slower and leave him open to counters from fast enemies. This is where Kain's powers would come into play with the player being able to use things like Kain's Mist form to dash through enemy attacks without taking damage or using a telekinesis blast in a manner like Force Repulse to send enemies surrounding Kain flying through the air to get much needed breathing room, or to kill them quicker by hurling them towards environmental hazards.
By any chance you've never played Darksiders I think you should check out the series. Especially Darksiders 2. Death always reminded me of Raziel a little.
I could get behind a Kain game being more like Sekiro than dark souls. Kain is just to powerful to be constantly having his ass kicked by random goobers who get the drop on him.
I stopped playing this game bc of the combat. Those big insect demons were not fun. I was in love with the first soul reaver. What a shame. Also the story was too complex for me at the time. Thanks for the video.
Also one of the biggest things about the first game were the bosses and seeing new areas, I did not feel SR2 had such great flow and the maps were not well connected, the puzzles were not as good as the cathedral section.
You're very welcome. And I agree, those Hylden are not fun to fight at all. Also yes. The sr1 world is so much more interesting than sr2. I think there probably should have been greater variations in each time period.
I quite like the idea of my videos jumping out of monitors and smashing people in the face. I have a list of people I'd like to hit especially hard with them.
I've thought about it. The main issue is I didn't play it back in the day so it would be a first impressions kind of review vs a trip down nostalgia lane. Could be fun though. Something to think about for the future.
Yes you just need to put down whatever weapon you're using, summon your wraith blade, break their block and then pick up your old weapon again so you can finish of the enemy. Absolutely seamless.
@@arkham666 you don’t have to do that at all. Just kill em with the wraith blade. Heal up to weaker people or go to spectral to refuel. Yes I agree…their attacks late game are very cheap.. but blast through them with wraith. It gets stronger and one hit kills mobs after you kill one enemy. At the end I didn’t screw around with human weapons…just mopped em up with wraith blade like a boss.

Kamoshida from Persona 5. The game has a rouges gallery of wacky villains from small time mobsters to corrupt politicians but the absolute worst of them is the abusive high school gym teacher. He's just so much more well written.
It wouldn't make sense though would it. Kain is a power fantasy, an all powerful Vampire lord wielding a sword possessed by an invincible Soul Wraith so. Having him constantly dying and feeling small and insignificant in a world that's bigger and stronger than him doesn't fit the bill. Something closer to Lords Of Shadow 2 would work better for Kain Maybe a 3d metroidvania.
