using the dot product / projection to find the distance from a point to a plane
discussion of using the common formula for distance between a point and a plane based on ax + by + cz + d = 0 also provided
shortest distance between a line parallel to a plane and the plane is just the shortest distance between a point on the line and the plane
shortest distance between two parallel planes is just the shortest distance between a point on one of the planes and the other plane.
