@@lukeasacher The best kept secret in music. I hope he gets the acclaim he deserves while he's still around. He will certainly get it eventually -great music always endures.
A song that should be played through the loudest speakers everywhere across the World. Never been so relevant for these very troubling Times. Awesome talent Rock on Joe.
It is important and AMAZING to understand that this album was recorded and mixed live DIRECT to a 2-track master. There is no multitrack master or mixing after the fact. There is an old Mix Magazine article that explains the technical details. I have it someplace…I hope.
I was the focus puller on the camera behind the drums. Best seat in the house. Joe was very edgy, a lot was on stake for him IMHO- and he hit one into the street! JOE is the BEST!
I saw it too, in Utah. Notice how there was a long pause after the song before the applause? Dude was a fcking prick on this tour. Pretty sure the audience was scared shirtless to make a noise and suffer another ass chewing. I liked the music but I threw this album in the street when I got home from the concert.
@@ttunacc funny you mentioned that. He kept our audience in line as well but the guy delivered the goods during the show.. And he blew the place away. Great and precious memories especially in this modern day of crap music. All good 👍
@@williamlee2112 It was a good concert. I was young at the time, so paying good money for the 'sit on your hands and silently worship me' behavior was pretty shocking to me at the time. I can appreciate the music but could never support his career after that.
My rock band played this incredible song in gritty downtown Edmonton at the Ambassador hotel in the late 80's. Probably my favourite song to petform in the set list. It's one thing to listen to it on vinyl but to see the actual performance of it is mesmerizing. Joe is a genius.
I hadn't heard this song in over 30 years then I "re-discovered" it 4 days ago... I haven't listen to another song since. This is, beyond a doubt, one of the most perfect tunes I've ever heard. And the parallels between the lyrics and the world today makes on wonder: Was Joe a clairvoyant and could see into the future? *OR* Do things not really change all that much...
My old friend Gary Burke is the drummer on this , I met Gary in NOLA in mid 70's when he had been playing with Scarlett Rivera (the Violinist Dylan found walking thru Greenwich Village , and added her to his Rolling Thunder Review. Scarlett is Violin on Mozambique ) I also met actor George Segal that same weekend at Molly's Irish Pub in NOLA where I was the Barman and took him to see her ! .
wow, he's such a solid, amazing drummer! I play drums and I still can't explain how he plays so powerfully yet looks like he's watching TV, ;-) he doesn't even break a sweat. dude rocks!
+Robert Hardman Which Molly's ? At the Market has my pic in the left wall center with Dixieland Stompers Band in Colorado , Jim Sr; came with them and he ate at my rest. in Steamboat Springs in mid 80s!too , miss him allot , a great Boss !
+Robert Hardman Find out or I will for u . where Billy Gregory might be playing for that , I use to sit in and sing with his bands in the FQ ! I'm sure if u say Hi from me he'd get a kick !
awesome Bass line, fantastic drumming, Joe's singing and piano are awesome. BUT VInnie is the unsung hero here. That guitar part is incredible understated and phenomenal.
You are too kind. What I was basically doing was copying the fake guitar on Joe's demo. And me being so mercurial I chose a voicing that utilized the thicker strings so it sounded more like a synth (It did not but I perceived it that way). I think it made the part a bit more interesting.
Wow, real musicians playing real instruments. How quaint! ;-) How many days did that base player practice that line to get it that good for a live tracking performance. Incredible. Awesome.
I recently returned to Joe Jackson (have always been a fan, but had not listened in a while.). I love this album most of all and when it came out in the mid-80s, I listened to it a LOT. I think the wrong 80s bands have made it through the nostalgia filters.
Thirty years ago Big world occured to me as my first live concert. Joe Jackson and his band were amazing. Still beautifull and powerfull music. I still have the lp of course. Eric
Wow. Thank you for adding this. I LOVED this song when it came out, and have talked about it for years, but probably have not heard it since the 80's. I forget about it, then when I do remember it, I am not at my computer. Anyway, thanks.
Its Joe having some fun. The lyrics at that point are referring to which US baseball team are you going to support this year. So its Joe doing pulling a face of the look of the person trying to decide which to go and thinking it through. Very funny actually.
I was working for The Roundabout Theatre at the time that they performed this show. My little costume shop was next to the lighting booth, and I had to keep on my own schedule for the next play that was scheduled to load in the week after. This show was the first public performance of these songs, recorded live, for the album, and filmed. Their rehearsal hours were long, and there were masses of special equipment being hauled into a compact, glorified lecture hall. It was all quite miraculous, and one of the most memorable weeks for me.
Thank You so much for posting this! I was at this show and for some reason think of it now and then for the last ump-teen years. Never thought I'd be able to see it again.
Unless its overdubbed, this is the version that made it on to the album. So its not actually from the World Tour - this is footage from the actual sessions for the album.
Funny you mentioned a 3 sided Lp, I have the Lp Second Winter by Johnny Winter It's a double set and there's only 3 sides with one totaly blank, it was released in 69. this is the first time i heard of another Lp like that , cool.
A very perceptive song by Jackson, he was onto how polarised and 'dumbed down' american politics was becoming. I'm surprised the song wasn't re-released when Trum hit the campaign trail, it would have been a hit with about 49% of US voters ;-)
No entiendo un carajo del inglés (ni puñetera falta que me hace), pero supongo que me pasa cómo a los "japos" con el flamenco. ¡¡¡DABUTEN JOE JACKSON!!!
+Miguel Mikelo Mikelo I own this LaserDisc and IIRC they asked the crowd to remain silent until they knew each sone was finished because they were recording direct to digital (it was Jackson's first CD). By recording "direct to digital" meant that there was no mixing board. Each mic and instrument were going direct to the recording without being modulated. So if one thing sounded louder or softer than another thing, it was because the musicians made it that way, not the technicians after the fact. Great Album. Bonus points! It was released as a 3-sided album, with a single groove on the 4th side to prevent damaging a phonograph stylus. Name 3 other famous 3-sided albums, each one "handling" the 3 sides differently than all the others, including this one (making 4 total).
I've got this in LP, and still listen to it :-p. As far as i remember, this album is "unique" with only three sides, so on the fourth side you can read "There in no music on this side". I was such a "lucky guy" at that time as i saw JJ three times on that "World tour". He always said how much he hated cd music copies, and, as the album was a live one (recorded with 4 tracks in NYC during 3 shows) asked Madonna to do the same (stil makes me lol)
This insanely talented man needs to be rediscovered by this generation.
He's Ellington level

The BEST 3-sided LIVE album ever made! Joe is simply amazing!!!

The fourth side was better than most modern artists.

This is a brilliant song, and this version is the most brilliant. Wonderful to see them all perform, in their coolest *1980s* outfits. :-)

I saw that show and it was superb. The band was tight and Gary Burke was a powerhouse on drums.
