  • Why The Mazda B-Series/Ford Ranger Is one of the Best Trucks You Can Buy
A review of my 1994 Mazda B4000, with 5 speed manual, 4x4, high mileage and a gas addiction! I had fun making this, it was a trail run with my new lav mic which works pretty well for the price. Sorry for the shaky in car video, I think I need to dail in the mount I have better. Find out why I love this truck! Sure the fuel economy isn’t the greatest, but the fact it’s a reliable well driving truck is all that matters.

since you asked about viewer's experience with rangers.. i bought a 96 2.3 auto 2wd. it was broke down and honestly should have been scrapped. my uncle bought it and dumped some money into it and gave up. sold it to me for $500 with the claim that it only needed another flywheel and starter.. it was replaced already but he couldn't get it sorted enough actually drive it. turns out the firing order was off, going by the book btw. the timing belt was also off a couple of teeth, also him. it was kicking back when it was cold but would start if it was above 80f outside. he also put a head gasket on it and a load of other stuff that had went bad from sitting (with a blown head gasket). didn't tell me that engine was full of rust and he had to "clean up" the cam and all that, it was pitted pretty bad, springs were thinned out, ugly. i got it home fixed the problems and then find the truck developed a miss. a compression check was less than impressive, should dropped a valve looking at the broken springs i found. i end up putting another engine in it and the trans lost 3rd and 4th like 2 days after i started driving it. i went out an bought a valve body assembly from the closest pull a part and slapped it in there old dirty fluid and all lol. she's been going good enough since. minor stuff, brakes, alternator, purge valve and solenoid is all i can think of more than oil changes. the trans is about done at about 200k pump whines and it shifts fairly hard when cold. the motor with unknown miles needs lash adjusters/lifters if you'd rather, it just chatters and can run rough when cold, i can here the "lifter tick" till the oil starts thinning with heat. i know that truck inside and out now and after all that, i still have it. it's been a trooper going on 4 years and some change now. it's pretty much my car with a bed at this point, work commuter. it's better than my 2500hd is on gas. only by about 50%, $20 to drive the ranger all week to work and $30 to drive the gmc. i suggest one to anyone needing something small to get around without kids. it's great, fires right up and goes every time but she ain't very fast. thinking hard on a v8 swap but idk..

@@blueovalfan23 that’s crazy! Sounds like you know your way around a vehicle that’s for sure. You should totally do a v8 swap!

My first vehicle is a 2010 2.3 manual 2wd Ranger that I got last fall @ 200k km. I paid $5000 for it which seemed good at the time.
The first thing to go was the steering rack which started leaking black tar after a very cold week. I don't think that it received any maintenance since the factory given the state of the steering fluid. That was by far the easiest major fix that I'll probably ever do on a vehicle. It was super easy to get at and only had a few bolts holding it on. Honestly I don't think I could have asked for a better thing the get my hands greasy for the first time on.
A few months later the starter began majorly acting up, and only working some of the time. Things simply didn't work out to get it fixed at the time, so I got some experience bump starting it for about a week before I was able to get it rebuilt.
As I was pulling the starter, I noticed some play in the upper control arm next to it. Turns out that the upper ball joints were shot on both sides and I needed to replace both arms.
It needed a steering alignment since I replaced the steering rack, but it wasn't that bad until I messed with the control arms. Now the front tires are pointed slightly toward each other, and I have an alignment scheduled.
I also suspect that the differential is failing because when I do tight-ish turns there is a loud grinding noise coming from the back and the back end feels like it's pulling. The last part I find really weird since it's a rwd.
In spite of everything that I've written above, I do absolutely love my Ranger, and I don't regret buying it. It's a ton of fun, and I fully intend to continue fixing it for years to come.
Frankly I suspect that it hasn't been maintained very well, but it's also been in a lot of minor collisions before I got it so that doesn't help.

97 ford ranger 2.3l 5spd I get 34mpg in my area all highway miles around here no leaks 2wd I love it has all the luxury items installed in it like no cruise control, no power windows, door locks. Doesn't get any better than that. I'm going to be putting a turbo 2.3l from an 88 ford turbo couple thunderbird

I have a '98 Ranger XLT 3.0L that I paid $700 USD for over a year ago, and it doesn't owe me a dime at this point... 309,000 miles on the odometer, and all I've had to replace was the shifter tube, and an oxygen sensor... I've had 28 vehicles over the past 10 years, and none of them have even come CLOSE to what I've put this little truck through over the past year.
I usually buy a cheap beater, drive it until it breaks, and then scrap it for half the price toward my next heap.
I bought this truck as a last resort, and it's never left me stranded no matter how much I've beaten the absolute SHIT out of it, and I really respect that... to the point where I'm actually putting money into fixing it up. I really want to see just how many miles it can ACTUALLY do!
If you find a good running Ranger, then BUY IT. You won't regret your decision. ❤

You got it bro. I bought my 2002 in 2008 with 55k miles , and now at 190k it still keeps trucking along- absolutely no difference in engine performance nor do I expect there will anytime soon. Fantastic little truck with a few electrical quirks and definitely a few rust issues but other than that, just really can't say enough about this super duper little machine

Seriously entertaining truck review! Thanks Liam! My dad owned an automatic 1990s red ford ranger when I was a kid. Now I am in grad school driving a blue 2003 Ford Ranger FX4 level II 4.0 manual with a Wildernest campershell on the back. I've installed a dual battery system, a camper floor and cabinet, built a roof rack, lots of other small things, and done general maintenance. I plan on upgrading the suspension next. I love this truck and plan on driving it till the wheels fall off, and then some!

Great video.. I have a 2000 Ranger Supercab, with the OHV 4.0 and four wheel drive. I've owned it since '05. It now has 193,000 miles on it. It's been great. Very reliable and capable. I haul a lot for construction. I have overload springs and my largest load is 2,436 pounds worth of block, concrete and rebar. I could get a bigger truck, but I love my Ranger. I can get supplies onto tight sites that an F-350 couldn't dream of getting into.

I have a 2004 ranger. 4.0 auto supercab with 334K miles and I daily drive it and I love it. Bought it for 200 dollars and I've driven it about 3 years. I've replaced the spring shackles, alternator, brake line, brakes front and rear, tie rods and upper control arm/ball joint. Gets about 15, 16mpg. It's old and beat up but still goes, it's quite impressive. Looking into a b2300 4x4 5 speed which brought me to your video. Going to semi retire the old ranger but I won't be getting rid of it. Cheers to clapped out trucks!

I searched high and low for a low mileage fx4. Ended up with a 2011 sport 4x4 with 17,000 miles. 3.73 gears vs 4.10 ratio but I mostly do city driving so gearing is adequate. Did all the fluids and a tune up two years later zero issues other than a thermostat that I should have done with the flush. I am gonna drive this thing till the wheels fall off. Love it. If you got one of these make sure to check for airbag recalls. They will grenade under inflation on the front side. Only con is absolute pig on gas as you said. I am at the pump a lot but I knew that going in.

I'm on my second Ranger. The first was a '95 that had over 330k miles. I wanted to refurbish, but the estimated cost was about $6K US so I bit the bullet and got a 2010 extended cab XLT. Came with all the bells and whistles available on a truck back then, and everything still works. The first owner handled this thing with kid gloves, keeping it for over ten years. The second and third owners only kept it for a few months. I plan on keeping it until it falls apart, just like the first one.

Mine is a 96 B3000 with the 3.0. Got it in 2014 with 97000mi, now it's at 150,000. I did end up with a cracked head but my cousin who owns a shop put a pair of rebuilt heads on from a ford windstar. Also had the clutch replaced due to the slave cylinder sticking. Those repairs were still cheaper than making payments. And they're easy to work on when doing minor repairs. Mine has the manual 4x4 with lock hubs and I put a set of BFGs on it. I see around 20mpg out of it. And believe or not, it books for about the same price I paid for it years ago. Definitely recommend these truck for anyone wanting a cheap daily truck.

In a span of 22 years, I’m on my 4th Ranger. ‘98 2.3 stick, ‘03 3.0 auto, ‘05 4.0 auto and now ‘11 4.0 auto - got hella miles out of all - my current ‘11 is the best I’ve had, rear disc was a GREAT upgrade. Between that and the Class 3 tow package, this thing is a beast towing. I pulled an ‘18 ft travel trailed from Louisiana to San Diego through hella mountains - yeah I had to slow down to 50 going up steep inclines but with the trans cooler that comes stock with the Class 3 tow package, it didn’t strain the truck very much. I’ve since pulled that trailer all the way to Miami and all over the southeast. I’m at 125k and baby this one so I can keep it on the road as long as I can. Ford should have never stopped making these in the U.S.

I shift around 3k rpm and my trips to work are 45 55 mph 15 miles a day. I do let me truck warm up for a good 10 min before I drive it. I change the oil every 2 months and a new air filter every other oil change. I also drained the gear box and put in the new synthetic stuff. Did the same for the rear diff full synthetic. Motor oil full synthetic, running shell 87 octane , and I put 2019 18 inch factory mustang wheels and tires on it. Not sure if that helped my fuel economy or hurt it. But I drive allot and fill up every 7 days

Run some silicone around the perimeter of that trough. I had water coming in to my cab too and i did that and fixed the problem. Very common on older cars. 2007 Ford Ranger Sport. 2wd, 5sp, 3.slow. 250,000km. Had to do first major maintenance on it this year, had to change out the timing cover gasket because of a coolant leak. So figured it was a good time to do a timing chain and guides as well. Rear end whines like a cheap hooker, but its solid. Starts every time. Does its work without complaint. No power options. Nothing to go wrong. Alberta truck so its still good underneath. Solid 18mpg on the highway, every time- just like its original window sticker says. Doesn't burn oil.
It just works. And that's what I love about it.

Original paint got it 5 years ago with 80k original miles was garage kept. Only paid 4000.00 too I detailed finish back to new and its garaged just turned to 105k miles 4.0 . Has manual 5 speed and we basically use it to pull behind motorhome.
It is the perfect truck to tow behind to hold all our extra stuff when we are on the road with camper. I have inflatable 12 ft motor boat In a container slides right in bed takes up 25% of bed area, along with 2 bikes mounted to rear hitch and extra stuff we use out of bed. In winter when traveling I keep 12lb propane tank as backup for Rv so we dont run out and its easier to refill in pickup then moving the RV out to refill. I then run propane hose to RV if needed.
The extended cab is perfect for the dog to ride in when we are not hitched up to RV. With all the toys in Bed once we unhitch from RV we are set to go to lake or bike trails. Its a great truck will out live me with on 100k miles. I keep it very well maintained. Just replaced rear wheel seals and bearings, new Motorcraft shocks. I use only motorcraft replacement part as well. I average 18 mpg 5 speed helps. With 4.0 and 5 speed she can pick up and go. Added Flowmaster Stainless cat back exhaust gives it a little growl. Other than that its all original no rust. I treat the frame as well to keep rust from forming.
My daughters BF just bought a 05 Ranger with 3.0 225k miles runs ok still , they just keep running if they we cared for be previous owners.

    We own a 2011 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4X4 with a 4.0 V6 , a 5spd automatic transmission, tow pkg, LSD.
We bought it in 2019 and it had only 20K miles.
It’s Silver (we hate silver, grey or black), but we bought it for $4K less than KBB.
I had it 2 toned out with Red metallic.
I added a K&N intake and a Flowmaster 3” exhaust, custom wheels, running boards, custom red and black interior, LineX spray in bed liner, air shocks for the rear, & skid plates.
We had to go to MT 2 years ago to get a load of items from my wife’s family farm.
I put 70# of air in the shocks so the pickup would ride level and 50# of air in the Cooper Discoverer A/T tires.
I set the cruise on 75mph and consistently got 25mpg.
Our Ranger currently has only 34K miles.
I’m a maintenance freak. I change the oil every 4K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic.
When it hit 30K miles I had a transmission flush, changed the front and rear differential, transfer case grease.
This is our 4th Ranger and is only used for work around our property and going to my favorite fishing hole. It will probably out live us.
    They’re great lil pickups.

I have owned three Rangers in the last three years. My first was my late grandfather’s 2000 auto with the 4.0L. Then I purchased a 2005 with the 4.0 and a manual transmission that I’ve been daily driving since December 2019. My most recent Ranger is a ‘99 4.0L auto that I am using as a trail truck. None of them have ever let me down. It has just been regular maintenance and the normal wear and tear of parts needing replaced at a certain mileage. My 2005 had a similar issue with the clutch slave cylinder. I developed a poor clutch pedal and it was hard to shift into almost all gears (nearly impossible to get into 1st and 2nd without slamming it in there) so I spent a few days pulling the trans and replacing all clutch components since it was hitting the mileage that it needed to be done.
    .
I’m surprised to see someone reference the GM IFS from 1960. Not even GM referred to it when they were celebrating 100 years of Chevy Trucks. As the owner of a 1961 Chevy Truck I’m glad to see it get some recognition. Even better when it’s in a video about Ford/Mazda.

With my truck (99 ranger 3.0 4x4 5 speed with 220k miles) I hauled another ranger on a trailer (5,000lbs) up and down the mountains of West Virginia with absolutely no issues. Never got hot, never complained and cruised just fine at 65mph (highway speed here) and even stopped pretty well too. I paid 1700 bucks for it 2 or 3 years ago, beat the hell out of it and it just kept going. Now I’ve grown pretty fond of the thing so I’m doing some upgrades like a v8, new interior with power leather heated buckets, full console, hud, sound system, small lift and some other goodies. I highly recommend a ranger to anyone, they’re great little trucks. That’s why I have 4 now lol

I do live in California where we have strict emission laws so the Mazda didn't pass smog a couple of times due to the carburetor. Since the carb has been rebuilt I haven't had problems. I have a Ford ranger 94 and it was not very much power with a 2.3 but I've greatly increased that bye removing the muffler and running straight pipe and gutting out the catalytic converter. I also have done away return line that runs exhaust back into the intake and up to some little box I'm not sure what it does but anyway I undid that and I need to remove the smog control pump which just adds more load. the vacuum lines off the vacuum tree run to the fuel regulator and that's about it because my AC doesn't work no freon in the compressor which I could also remove since I have no intention of having AC which would lessen the load. But at any rate the difference in torque and speed is greatly noticed it used to slow down going up hills now I can speed up going up steep hills and it used to playing out at about 75 mph 80 now I can barely the speedometer and 85 and still be gaining speed one thing is when I hit 5th gear though it's like it planes out doesn't have any more to Red line in 5th gear so maybe it needs a turbo would it hold apart or would it fly apart I don't know, for more of exciting police chases and such like in my F-150 Johnny Cash black 5.0 4 on the floor check out and then nanobugged studios and I put this on my grandbaby's life they're making deep fake videos at the local sheriff's department so the police chase you see at deepfake videos and above UA-cam channel it ain't me it ain't my code offended it ain't nothing what really happened it's all fake by the sheriff's department and they run it through Court Jones county sheriff's department Georgia they did that you want to see what really happened check out the video with the same name where I tell the story 8 months before I knew there was a deep fake video. Wish they still made these (they remind of of the 90's F150s), but I just bought another used Mazda B2300. Never saw a winter, has been undercoated, it's got 140000 kms on it. Hoping this Mazda will treat me as good as my past 2 vehicles did but gonna take care of the rust this time.
