  • Picking up from the part 1 video of our Three Isles Tour run by West Coast Tours, we have now arrived at Craignure and boarded the Craignure to Fionnphort coach. Fionphort is where the smaller boat will pick us up and take us on our next leg to Staffa Island to see Fingal ’s Cave.
Coaches on Mull are nowadays operated by West Coast Motors and the travel time to Fionphort is around an hour covering a distance of 35 miles.
Our coach driver was exceptionally friendly and kept us amused with some witty jokes throughout the journey to Fionphort. Being a local man who has lived on Mull for a good many years he gave us a grounding about his island.
From giving us plenty of time to watch out for upcoming areas where we might spot the wildlife or explanations about the history of the island. How it is progressing in these modern times and even some interesting Geology lessons. Which is very apt seeing as we are on our way to see one of the most unusual geological features in the UK.
If you find yourself lucky enough to have the same driver, then you will learn all these things. The approach to the mussel farm at Loch Spelve and the highest mountain on Mull, Ben More.
The first half of the journey is more or less inland and through the mountains whereas the second half skirts along the southern bank of Loch Scridain.
On the opposite bank of the loch we can see the Ardmeanach peninsula which sits between Loch Scridain that we are travelling alongside and Loch Na Keal on the northern shore. There are three such peninsulas on the western coast of Mull, Ardmeanach is the middle one.
If you look at the rock formation of the peninsula facing, you will note that it looks like parallel steps have been cut into the hillside. If you remember that this area was created by volcanic action then you will understand that these steps are various levels of lava flows formed through the ages.
These flows run horizontally as opposed to the vertical columns of basalt at Fingal's cave on Staffa that we will be visiting in my next video.
