Considering that you can launch the TLAMs from anywhere on the map, I drove 100 kms (kyds) to the north west and fired them from there. It worked and as soon as the missiles hit I was clear to disengage. I didn't exactly keep track of the time but even with time compression I think I was driving around for well over 45 minutes. It worked for me and I got away no problem as a result, but it does take some preparation before you can do it. Now the SEAL team mission ... that one is a real bitch. The flashing icons the plane dropped on you were indeed the sonobuoys.
As far as we're concerned, you completed that mission and completed it despite multiple torpedo tube bugs. A handsome victory, I say. Heck, even the navy veteran Jingles had trouble here ;)
The comparison with Jingles is a rather poor one, not only because he was stationed aboard surface ships, certainly not subs, but mostly because Jingles plays Cold Waters, and most other games if they offer the setting, on easy difficulty. That is totally fine with me, he considers himself to be a total noob after all. Magz on the other hand is playing probably on hard or even elite difficulty, so I would rather use JiveTurkey, who is an ex-US Navy submarine sonar man. He not only plays always on Elite, but considers this mission to be one of the most unpredictable ones, since your success mostly depends on luck, and there is only few things you can do, like bringing more than the absolute necessary 8 Tomahawks. Besides it's also a mission than can be lenghty and boring, not as bad as some insertion missions, but equal in execution, you have to dive through shallow water, which forces your speed to the minimum, and using the time dilation is somewhat tricky, since you might move slow, but the enemy does not...
This mission reminded me of the most difficult one I had to pull off on a game called 688 on the Amiga 500, some years ago. Same sort of thing. Only the second you launched the 1st missile, the Sovs were all over you. That game had contours of the bottom though, was able to steer into some of the crevasses and avoid too much heat. Failed the 1st 3 times I tried, ended up succeeding after I tried it drunk, oddly enough....
689 was by far the best sub sim of all time. Mainly because it was made by a defense contractor Janes. I was a part of a virtual navy that used 688 and other navy and aircraft sims. We had full chain of commands for pacific and Atlantic fleets and would do custom missions and even some real time multiplayer versus a sister Russian virtual navy. When you completed the missions you had to send operational reports in true formats up the chain of command who kept operation maps of the simulated war. I loved playing it and the fact that 688 sonar system you could take it manually all the way of watching listening to it to search for contacts. I wish they was something that was even close to what 688 was. Cold water to me is more of a sister to Red storm rising I use to play on the Commodore.
20:00 The music in this game is well done; it subltly changes the music to something tenser when you're getting closer to being in combat. And when you're far away, the music is erie and quiet.
23:42 A common bug from what I've seen of this game used to be that you'd sometimes (in very specific conditions) get the "Mission Failed" message when the mission was actually passed. This is...strange
I remember a mission in Silent Hunter 4 in which you had to sneak through shallows to get to the Yamato and sink it. At some point there was less than 40ft to the ground, the view model in external view was scraping the bottom already. Very tense and fun to have your advantages taken away.
Aircraft and Helicopter dropped torps generally have smaller warheads (weight issues most likely). I looked it up, Airborne torps have about 2/3 of the explosive power of most sub or surface ship torps.
May I suggest a practical demistration of how bad the missiles are. Such as hitting your suppiliers over the head with it repeatedly and asking how they are in one peice
One thing I worked out for myself was that you can't launch from flank speed, it jams the torp in the tube. Having to return to port with three jammed tubes, and a busted mast sucked (Lost the EMS and scope due to failing to retract them before diving and running from attack)
If you have problems selecting the tube that you want to fire, try right (double) clicking it. This is a very confusing bug, especially when it happens in a tense situation

Ahhhhhh ok thank you for letting me know.... I just thought that would be why it said the mission had failed... well that just means it's total bs that it failed. It is nice to know though that the missions aren't exactly the same everytime adds a bit of replay ability to it.
There isn't much of an animation but the sonar buoys are modeled, Magz. They're just very small and hard to see, especially at night but if you know what they look like they are easy to see. They are basically just little metal cylinders sitting just below the surface, almost looks like a can.
I finally did it. Took out one of the escorts, headed north to deeper water, used F9 to speed time. Launched four, headed away loaded a MOSS fired that in another direction while switching to quiet once it was in the water and heading away. I headed quietly in the opposite direction to the MOSS. Once the heat had died down reloaded with four more TLAMs, did the same again. You need to use F9 to head away and get to deeper water and use a MOSS.
That's why I don't do those missions Magz. They are bugged and near impossible. Best to go sub hunting. I wish they had a tutorial on missiles that was better than what they have.
Russians would always have to watch for Mk-60 CAPTOR mines. This mine anchors itself to the sea floor with a chain & floats vertically under the water. It has sensors to detect enemy submarines from friendly submarines & surface ships. Once it detects an enemy, the mine spits out a Mk-46 torpedo powered by Otto II fuel which is an orange, oily substance.
@MagzTV 8:05 not a torpedo, thats a sonar buoy. Also your TLAM's can be shot down by CWIS equipped ships if they happen to fly inside the point defence range on their way to target, ive failed the land strike mission a couple times because i didnt carry spare TLAM's figuring launched will be a certain hit
its a bug, this game still has many issues to iron out. had that happen a couple times to me as well he's no idiot this isn't rare but common enough to be an issue.
Awesome job great moves but what is a q2 mean? that I don't understand at all...incredible game too....there are a lot pings ...Thank you so much.... I do enjoy watching...
Dammit, I tried this mission 4 times now thinking you had to be in the pink circle to fire and you have to fire at the harbor icon thingy. No wonder I kept failing.
Tbh I think this mission pretty dumb. Forcing to fire a cruise missile under 10KYD when the range of those things is over 1000 Mi. (And btw the range in the game files is on that scale)
Pretty sure the TLAM missions are bugged for the time being. They also have a very long time limit so you can just go for tonnage I mean forget to pick up the tomahawks
No, They don't work that way. Each tube is independent. Anyway I have confirmed that it is a rare bug since then and a recent beta update corrected the problem.
Why can’t you use the 12 vertical launch tubes on the la class. That’s the one this I can’t stand about this game. So much detail in this games but they forgot this huge detail.
hit an enemy sub with torpedo - it goes down being hit with enemy torpedo - minor flooding, nothing serious is broken, we're ok boys _perfect gameplay balance_, lol also bugs like it is in an early access
You do realize that the 688 is designed to survive a direct torpedo impact? Also I wouldn't say nothing, The hull breach is irreparable and requires my repair teams active at all times to prevent flooding. If I go into silent running my repair team stops working and the compartment floods which will cause the reactor can fail and I will be unable to maintain ballast and as such I will sink. On top of that with hull structural integrity down to 26% my maximum depth has been lowered to something like 700 feet, any lower and I'll implode so now I have to sail through Russian controlled waters, and there sonar net, Across the Norwegian sea all the way to Holy loch without silent running and without my depth advantage. If I am located and attacked, I'm in a world of trouble.
Can a sub realistically survive a torpedo in its ribs like that? or is this game ez mode for gameplay reasons? Genuine question...i know nothing of sub/naval warfare. Must have drowned in some other life cause water aint my thing...
nice try, lots of strange stuffs (particulary the TLAM in tube failing, no reason theoricly), but u get more far than me, i get killed each times ! lol (...and about that, u are not the only one for bugs, i also get strange appcrashes 2days ago, still dont understand anymore what happened there). i also get surprised to never see any mission of Seals ops or TLAMs in campaign... i hope they will fix this asap. :'( but it was fun, i will retry it too... (send a MOSS just after first 4TLAMs seems a good tactic to do, lets try too) :)

The point above the thermal layer is the warm surface water while the layer below is the deep colder water. For a submarine it's basically soft cover, The thermocline will reflect and distort sound waves as it passes through it, lowering the detectable sound. At sharp enough angles it will reflect sound entirely rendering submarines on the other side of it invisible to there targets.
It's a boundary between warmer surface water and cooler water below it. I've experienced a similar change many times when i go swimming in the sea in a smaller scale. You can float on the surface in warm water, but when you put your feet down, there's a clearly cold water some distance away from the surface. This is because the wind and heating from the sun affects the surface water much more and there's quite a sharp border between that layer and the water that is too far down to be moved by wind. This difference in temperature and density causes sound to bounce from the layer and to stick to either side of it more than pass through it.
2 ways you can describe how quiet it is:
Might Jingles: "You can here a pin drop out here."
Magz: "You can hear a Sparrow fart."
One of my favourite videos

A tip : watch movies on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies recently.
@Johan Joseph yea, I've been watching on flixzone} for months myself :D
gotta hand it to the guys, the music really sets the mood.
I shit my pants just watching this.

688i Hunter Killer...... i used to love that game!

At about 15:55 in this video: The shadow of that Soviet airplane overflying the submarine is _cool._ AND _creepy._
And slightly inaccurate.
The shadows were straight wing, while the Tu-142 was swept wing.
21:00 points out ship wrecks might be blocking acoustic detection, cold waters sound track begins blocking magz narration acoustics...

i love watching this game
11:18 - WAIT! STOP!
>Pulls out lump of coal, puts it in ass checks
Okay. Continue.
Yep. That's a diamond.
Still amazed that a submarine can take an torpedo hit
Some can, most can't and none respond well to it.
I like that idea, When I get back to Holy Loch I will do exactly that.
One thing I worked out for myself was that you can't launch from flank speed, it jams the torp in the tube.

Magz I saw this mission on Jingles' channel and it said you had to fire 10 Tomahawks not 8.
The missions are not the same. They range between 6 and 14, In this one it was 8.
Ahhhhhh ok thank you for letting me know.... I just thought that would be why it said the mission had failed... well that just means it's total bs that it failed. It is nice to know though that the missions aren't exactly the same everytime adds a bit of replay ability to it.
+MagzTV hey Magz you stopped the Russian subs before you even started them! Can you play more?
noob question here: Tomahawk can go for like 500 miles, why do you need to be that close to the launch area?
There isn't much of an animation but the sonar buoys are modeled, Magz. They're just very small and hard to see, especially at night but if you know what they look like they are easy to see. They are basically just little metal cylinders sitting just below the surface, almost looks like a can.
Epic video Magz!

"This is not the time I need my tubes glitching out, game."
My partner said that once.
🤢🤮🤧
Excellent, very enjoyable
14:37 I think those are some sonar bois
Attack, my people!!!
I would have just started launching torpedoes in every direction as soon as the ships started showing up. Though that bug DID fuck up your mission.
Russians would always have to watch for Mk-60 CAPTOR mines. This mine anchors itself to the sea floor with a chain & floats vertically under the water. It has sensors to detect enemy submarines from friendly submarines & surface ships. _"USS Sparrow Fart"_ will be the name of my next submarine.
😁😁😁😁
8 TLAMs or you know......one uhh Special Atomic Detonation Device.
Wait maybe don't shoot the nukes yet. The Cold War hasn't gone Atomic yet
23:40 the exact same thing happened to the Mighty Jingles, lol
Game was glitchy back in those days
@MagzTV 8:05 not a torpedo, thats a sonar buoy. Also your TLAM's can be shot down by CWIS equipped ships if they happen to fly inside the point defence range on their way to target, ive failed the land strike mission a couple times because i didnt carry spare TLAM's figuring launched will be a certain hit
Well criikeee, what we have heeeaaah is a raayah tohhhrp
Russian roulette. Which tube will fire?
Let us know if you ever find out what caused the glitch in this match. Looked like good launches all across the board.
Have the same bug. Hope they fix it soon.
How about a mission with the Kilo and the Typhoon class? :D
5:58 those poor uboat captains huh?
You need to enable Beta, these bugs were all fixed yesterday 1.06b
Objectives were all green when he pressed escape and you could see . Textbook pre-1.06 version.
its a bug, this game still has many issues to iron out. had that happen a couple times to me as well he's no idiot this isn't rare but common enough to be an issue.
just had to go to same place but i had to drop troops off. and after i droped them off a chopper torped me and i couldnt get off the bottum
Hey captain Magz, I had same problem there
at 4.34 into the video there was 3 tomahawk impacts and you said where's the 4th , i think for whatever reason the 4th didnt impact the base
Wow
Tbh I think this mission pretty dumb. Forcing to fire a cruise missile under 10KYD when the range of those things is over 1000 Mi. (And btw the range in the game files is on that scale)
How does a sub with that big of a hole make it anywhere?
Good video magz :) but for the next one could yo uturn the music down a notch? :D
I've had this mission. For me though the missiles just splash down.
Pretty sure the TLAM missions are bugged for the time being. They also have a very long time limit so you can just go for tonnage I mean forget to pick up the tomahawks
soooo I fire the missiles into the area marked on the map but they never acquire a land target... any ideas?
Did you fail because you hit port instead of the airbase?
Seems like you were hitting F.... which switches active tube...
isn't it possible that you couldn't fire the tube because you were loading the other one in pair?
No, They don't work that way. Each tube is independent. Anyway I have confirmed that it is a rare bug since then and a recent beta update corrected the problem.
rip jingles lol
I think you should have hit the base on the other side of the red area. Could that have been your other target?
Tim Norton it doesn't actually do anything. The circle is like a waypoint to the missiles anyway and directs them to the facility.
How did you survive that direct hit ? I don`t understend.
smaller warhead.
Why can’t you use the 12 vertical launch tubes on the la class. That’s the one this I can’t stand about this game. So much detail in this games but they forgot this huge detail.
This is a Flt 1, not a Flt 2 or a 688-I Flt 3 Los Angeles class.
Magz, what's the MOS? Any info on it?
These missions usually just mean death to your sub. I just skip them.
Somebody's gotta do em
hit an enemy sub with torpedo - it goes down
being hit with enemy torpedo - minor flooding, nothing serious is broken, we're ok boys
_perfect gameplay balance_, lol
also bugs like it is in an early access

He was hit with a much smaller torpedo dropped by aircraft, not one of the ship-killers that subs and surface ships carry.
Can you turn the music down a tad?
mmhhhhh, taff in exile???
Where. Do get cold waters
The music is a tad too loud at times Magz.
Can a sub realistically survive a torpedo in its ribs like that? or is this game ez mode for gameplay reasons? Genuine question...i know nothing of sub/naval warfare. Must have drowned in some other life cause water aint my thing...
Some can yes although it's never good for them.
nice try, lots of strange stuffs (particulary the TLAM in tube failing, no reason theoricly), but u get more far than me, i get killed each times ! lol (...and about that, u are not the only one for bugs, i also get strange appcrashes 2days ago, still dont understand anymore what happened there).

now that was some bullshit
Probably due to bug you were unable to accomplish mission and thus your failure ;)
I had the same bug happen to me.
23:23 i think it says that he completed 8/8 strikes you idiot
Could someone explain what a thermal lair is?

Oh okay, thanks!
Music is way louder then your voice on this one.
the TLAM missions are bugged, currently impossibe to sucessfuly complete; shame for a game in full release that sells for 40 quid
The Russians must have hacked your gameplay.
you was meant to fire 10 TLAM's it says you need atleast 10
No this mission required only 8, you can get missions between 6 and 14 total.
we never saw the 4th TLAMland maybe it was shotdown.
5th comment ftw
