- The terms Smoke Alarm and Smoke Detector are used interchangeably, however they are very different and this short video will explain the difference and cover off on the features and requirements that apply to each one.

Mr. Butler should be able to confirm He did indeed call me from Australia to the U.S !!! I did not know about the Photo electric issue until he called me! it is unfortunate the loss of Mr. Patton !!! I need to test smoke alarms in my apartment to meet Victorian legislation, there are only smoke detectors which I cannot test. Do I need to install smoke alarms to meet legislation?
Hi Jack - If you already have "Smoke Detectors" in your apartment, leave them up to the fire contractor (like Firewize) to test. These detectors are likely connected to the building Fire Detection and Alarm System (FDAS) and may call the fire brigade and operate other connected services such as an emergency warning system, access control system or the heat and smoke control measures of mechanical ventilation systems.
If your building already has these "Smoke Detectors" then that is adequate to satisfy the "Approved Design" for the building.
If you are certain the apartment is fitted with Smoke Alarms (not Smoke Detectors) then go-ahead and test these smoke alarms at least once per year. If they are older than 10 years, consider replacing them.
