- •A behind the scenes look of what goes on both inside and outside the cab of a steam locomotive working its way up a mountain side.
•This was filmed on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum located in Durango, Colorado. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad started construction of this line in the fall of 1881 and it was completed by July of 1882 and has been in active service ever since.

I will second that emotion. My father taught me about trains. He just got the word he's got cancer. I grew up just outside of the Baltimore and Ohio rail line. To see these massive machines still in operation is such an honor and a privilege. Especially to see the inner working parts😊. Thank you to the poster who put up this. I'm kind of in destress about my dad. But this will always make me remember him.
There's nothing like the look & the smell of a steam locomotive that's still earning it's keep. This is a fantastic video that I just finished watching for the 3rd time. We rode the train way back in 1972, and the ride is still as thrilling as ever. One of the finest videos yet that truly captures the magnificance of the route and the wonderful iron horses that still bring a tear to the eye of any true railfan. Congrats to Jeff Berrier for this breathtaking video, just a super job! All I can say now it a simple "WOW! "

I'm blown away at the amount of labor expended to keep these old locomotives functional. My mom and dad rode one of these trains about the time that Bill began working for the rail road. They couldn't stop talking about their experience. Now I know why!

I have great memories of this locomotive. We had our honeymoon in Durango. My wife loves horses so we stayed at a dude ranch where she could ride. I love trains, so naturally we rode the train to Silverton. I didn’t realize that she wore a white silk sweater. Well…. I was a kid in a candy shop and didn’t notice until too late. She was mad as hell. I also have a brass PSC O scale model of this engine. Truly a museum piece. Excellent detail!

I could watch these trains and fall asleep in a heart beat. I love all of them . I’m happy we still have trains around. I’m 78 yrs old and grew up with them in West Virginia C and O Railroad!🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love the shots along the engineer's side of the engine. Several years ago, i rode in the cab of 486 and they had speed reductions set just out of downtown. Love the movement of the side rods on steam engines. It's a work of art and amazing to look at them from that angle.

I took my family on this trip years ago. It is a wonderful trip. The view from the locomotive cab is even better than from the coaches. This video really captures the essence of operating a steam locomotive. I like these narrow gauge engines since they really illustrate what mountain railroading was like. Imagine making this trip in a blinding snowstorm. Those were tough men back then.
We rode the Durango & Silverton in September of 2019. Wonderful trip all around! We chose the round trip and were quite happy to spend the entire day enjoying the ride and the time in Silverton. We had a narrator/historian in our coach who added immensely to the experience, as he spoke of the history of the D&S and how it was constructed. Would take this trip again in a heartbeat. Oh, and I'm the son and grandson of railroaders who spent their careers on the Southern Pacific working both freights and passenger trains. Yeah, it's kinda in my blood.
Love the sound of the engine slowing down as it comes into Silverton!
I'm usually good for 10 minutes or so of train vids. Watched this one all the way through--great job. ! First rode Durango/Silverton in '58, '65 and '70. Haven't been back since about '80. Long overdue. Big changes.

K-28's, some of the best looking steam locomotives I have ever seen. The D&SNG have some of the best whistles period. My personal favorite is that of #473. That three chime sounds amazing when Bill rips the chord.
Personally I found that whistle not very appealing.
Simply BEAUTIFUL. A clear example to follow by all those responsibles of railroad lines, locomotives and trains around the world, most of whom have left the historic material without less or none interest about it.
You are doing an enviable job keeping those locomotives and railway compositions alive. My most fervent support from here!
The D&S has 8 steam locomotives, and all have been in continuous use for 97-98 years. Speaks volumes about the maintenance regimen of the D&S.
Well Jeff you knocked it out of the ballpark! A wonderful ride indeed from start to finish. OMG those drops to the river below and not much margin on the right side of the engine.... wow! Scary! Sorry we did not get to see you but you had the camera. Well maybe a little selfie next time! Best!

I rode the Cascade train with my daughter in Feb of last year, 2018 and Bill was the conductor. He was the engineer on the 476 the next day, her first trip after rebuild. I have ridden the Silverton many times since 1963. Always a fun ride.
I will be riding it for the second time in July, 2024, 38 years after the first ride. This time, I will be in costume-an 1880s dress!
Jeff, THANKS for making your excellent videos without music! The sound of the machine, the sound of the steam, the sound of the whistle are all we need. Bravo!
My wife and I road this train in 1982 we had this same engine 476. This is by far the best train ride ever. We hit it at the right time when the aspens were just stating to turn. Some of the most beautiful country that I have ever seen. When you get to Silverton you have a choice of riding the train back to Durango or taking a bus back. We chose to take the train back. Tip if you ever get to ride this train sit on the right side of the car that way your facing out over the canyon.

I am impressed by the filming of this passenger train hauled by beautiful steam engines and I am afraid it's been taken out of service
I had been a goods train guard from 1971 to 1975 in Rawalpindi division of Pakistan. Luckily I had ridden quite a few times and enjoyed the way drive and firemen would keep up the desired pressure and vacuum and above all the tea brewed in chilling cold on injecter.

Thanks for posting. That right-of-way is just hangn gonto the mountainside in places. I'd have to close my eyes to ride that parts of that route. There are old engineers and bold engineers, but no old bold engineers.

First thought I'd have to watch this in stages, then found I just could not stop - could almost smell the coal, steam, and oil, never seen anything like this one before. AND, the wisdom of letting the image (and train) tell its own story - those spectacular musical sounds... worth a thousand spoken words. It's a beautiful noise! Have to admit, some of those edge of the river cliff shots left me a tad uneasy, these mighty engines are like HEAVY, HEAVY and some of that ground looking a little loose like - while I'm sure its been there a long, long, time it ain't gonna be there forever!.
The best locomotive video I've seen yet. AWESOME scenery, and the shots from the engine, great.

Seeing a steamer in action always brings a smile to my face. I can't help but thinking of Jimmy Rogers, Roy Acuff, Hank Snow, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Stonewall Jackson, and last but not least, BOXCAR WILLIE.

Great video, love hearing just the sounds of the train without talking or music. The scenery is incredible! What a ride that is. Being on the east coast I always wondered why the narrow gauge railroads did not "just clear more space" for standard tracks, but after seeing those tight passes through the mountains now I know.....there aint no more space to clear.

Thanks for sharing. Brings back many pleasant memories. My Grandfather and Dad had a coal siding in a small town ( Williamsburg, Ohio ) in Southwestern Ohio, 35 miles East of Cincinnati. I grew up in the business. Unloading and delivering coal was a hard, dirty, difficult job. Glad to have experienced and ridden on coal fired trains.
Thank you for the beautiful and well-done video. I first rode this line in 1955 and have done so many times since. My grandfather was a conductor on this line and married my grandmother in Durango in 1887. I notice No. 476 has had that atrocious movie stack removed. I and a lot of other D&RGW fans hope that the stack shroud (which was just that---it slipped down over the stack so it looked like a Hollywood idea of the 1870s) has been cut up so it can never be used again. Back in the '60s, several railfans I know were considering doing just that under cover of a moonless night. Later photos provided evidence they either thought it through once more or chickened.

I just rode this route as a passenger. Every time we neared one of these places, the passengers would stand up so they could lean over and look down. Thought the imbalance might tumble us into the abyss.

This is the best footage I have seen on how the engines actually work and how they are maintained. Most of the time it is the same ol' content train going down the tracks, but this is far more informative than showing peoples vacation movies. Plus sharing about the history was also awesome. Thanks.

About 1960, I rode the last passenger steam train from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Paris, Texas. The conductor just came through the cars and told us we were the last. Riding a commercial passenger train is different somehow from riding an excursion train. I encourage you to ride the excursion trains in your area, if there is one, as much as possible, they are fun. Nothing like getting a face full of hot cinders and gravel when the wind shifts. You won't likely have that problem in you air conditioned excursion car.

Amazing video really well produced with a good mix of cab shots and exterior panning shots etc. Watched this on full screen with headphones on from start to finish...just loved the rumble of the wheels and full range of sounds on the headphones. Great stuff. I'm in Australia but if I ever come this way I'll do this beautiful scenic trip for sure!
