    Fun fact, the gurney flap is the only aero tech to have been invented in motorsport then used in aerospace

    • @noncog1

      I will say, buying a larger, efficient wing wouldve been better, bcs gurney flaps increase highside pressure, but overall reduce efficiency. But this cost $40 and a large, efficient carbon wing could run around 20x that much. That being said, are you sure you endplates are optimal? Could potentially gain downforce and even improve efficiency (not reduce drag, just gain more downforce than drag) by optimizing them if they have room for improvement. However, if they came with the wing and you know that the company designed them well, or they came from someone who did their homework on them, there isnt anything to be gained. But if you arent sure about them, it be really cool to see you and kyle.engineers/jfk aero colab. Would be super rad to see kyle run some sim on your car, made recommendations, lightyear build it, then you run it and see what difference was made. Obviously that isnt realistic, but it would be super awesome to see as a series if you 3 were all in a position to make it a mini series with enough viewership to make a profit off of it.

      Also would be interesting to hear an aerodynamicist speak on what angle the flap should be, perp. to ground plane, perp. to wing wing trailing edge, or, most likely, perp to airflow at flap height that is very close but not quite parallel to wing edge

      "buying a larger, efficient wing wouldve been better" - perhaps, it would also cost a lot of money. This was like fifty bucks.

    I used to work with carbon a lot. It is abrasive, so it would chew up band saw blades quickly. We got a special carbide grit blade and it was magic-- at least until someone cut aluminum with it and gummed it all up. Moral of the story is composites work well with abrasives and carbide, but HSS cutting tools die a quick death in its presence.

    Do you do any aero simulation of your car beforehand to see if it actually does anything for the wing for example? Can definitely imagine it's difficult to notice out on track, but maybe it's easier to see in a simulation? No clue how difficult that is though, just thinking out loud 😅

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  Рік тому +1

      Nothing has been done like that, I'm just a dude in a shed, nowhere near the skills or technology to be doing aero simulations.

  • @garagecedric
    @garagecedric Рік тому +1

    Maybe time for some analysis on track? Put some wool tufts on the underside and a GoPro, to see at which angle of attack it stalls out, especially now that you modded the wing profile. Keep it up!

      Hey Joel, the wing element was made by a friend who has the tools and materials to work with small volume carbon fibre car parts. It is hand laminated carbon fibre wrapped around a foam core.
