sophie, this vlog was such a gift! thank you for sharing your week with us. your honesty always touches my heart. okay, i am so completely sold on the new miranda july after hearing your thoughts-it sounds exactly like my kind of book! i hope warm weather, spring blooms, and beautiful words continue to find their way to you x
🥹 definitely want to hear yr thoughts on miranda july if/when you get to it! i found it a very interesting and actually comforting look at ageing and creating: now that i’m in my 30s and sometimes feeling so old/passée, it’s good to hear about people 10-15 years older
He’s all caught up! Love spending time with you, I’m so sorry you’ve been going through loss and grief. Sending you lots of love. Ps. I’m keen to get to the new Laing but I’ve not read some of her prior ones so am not allowing myself to get it until I have. That may change 🌷 Pps. Loved seeing you and Ben laughing together 💜
wowww i’m honestly impressed with the commitment (meanwhile i’m currently answering a month of comments, so get ready for some sophie in yr notifications lol)🏅 thank you for your kind thoughts 🤍 and re laing: i think you can kind of start with any non-fiction (i don’t love crudo). they generally have a similar memoiristic + art/lit commentary arc. i typically recommend starting with the lonely city, but i don’t think you’d be ill served starting with garden against time
Thank you Sophie! You always have great book recommendations! I also thought about Alice Walker's "In Search of Our Mother's Garden" when you discussed books and gardens. I always learn of a new writer to me. The Laing book sounds interesting. I enjoyed the Kincaid and Kara Walker interview.
thank you! 🩵 i think i’ll probably start milton soon. i’m happy to say that laing’s book has made me much more excited about it. i’ll try to line up my reading with a vlog. good luck with your paradise lost reading, too!
Thank you for taking us through all the ups and downs! What a week! Enjoyed listening to you discuss gardens along with your reading of Garden Against Time. I’ve yet to read Laing but I am so so curious. I was thinking of starting with Funny Weather but I wonder where you suggest to start! Lmk
Oh, I wish I could read MyFace for The World To See for the first time. ❤. I had the same reaction to In Love. . I got Ordinary Notes out of the library and found it interesting and super creative too. I never talked about it. I might have not been able to reflect my experience in a worthwhile way! I’m glad you did. Me!ME TOO! HATE WASHING MY HAIR!
i want to pick your brain about both hayes books! you're definitely one of the people i plan to reach out to, if you're interested in to messaging/chatting about it
regarding laing: i’d say start with the lonely city (more connective tissue/longer sections), or funny weather (shorter content covering more things) re showers: i don’t think of french people as particularly fond of showers or frequent hair cleaning - do you? washing culture is so dependent on climate! i actually take a lot of (i think too many) showers as a means of just feeling some comfort, but not that often bc i feel dirty (this is also definitely bc i don’t exercise…)
Hello Sophie! Does Olivia Laing mention Elizabeth von Arnim and her « German garden » in her book? To me this book is pretty much a retelling of the Garden of Eden, ou disons une sorte d’Ève qui reprend sa place dans un jardin. En tout cas je le vois comme ça! And it’s a short book, lovely to read for this season. Sinon j’espère que ta peine, bien qu’elle ne puisse s’en aller, devienne plus légère à porter au fil du temps… Love your videos! Bisous
merci - ce commentaire est vraiment gentil 🖤 je connais le german garden (et laing en parle pas dans son livre, qui est très anglais) mais je vais absolument le check out !
I love the way you speak about books and all your plants!
thanks!! 💚

Can’t wait to check out the new Laing. Your new hair color reminds me of spring lilac flowers-🎉-fabulous!
oooh thank you! as a great appreciator of lilacs, i love that comparison!

Right up to the moment new books and some from the 1950s - nice range! Good to hear you, as always. Merci bien.
i’m an esoteric and broadly interested sort! that’s the sophie experience :) thanks for tuning in! 💗

i’m very glad to hear that!
definitely exploring gardens/nature/history/writerly voice currently
I'm also reading Paradise Lost this year and I'm kind of scared if I'm honest; it looks so intimidating haha
love your reading vlogs Sophie!
thank you! 🩵

i think funny weather is good place to start - it’s more of an omnibus of shorter things - or the lonely city if you want a stronger through-line
oooh i haven’t really heard anyone talking about the new laing yet!! need to dig into more of her stuff beyond the lonely city
i think it maybe is just out in the us now, or will be this summer? in any case i’m pretty it wasn’t in may 🌱

yaaaa i feel vindicated in my hatred of hair washing! (but actually, i do know a lot of people who agree with us)

Thanks for the shout out! I also loved Olivia Laing’s book. 😎📚👍
43 days until it's out 😿😿😿.
@@Sean_neaS It’s worth the wait! I’ll never look at a garden in the same way.
@@Sean_neaS it's out in the uk if you're feeling impatient :)
have you read laing's other books?
@@bibliosophie Oh, yes. I’m a big fan!
