It's easy to miss pins on the CPU unless you look at them from all angles, ie, top only misses pins bent in different planes.
I was thinking that maybe the VRM heat-sink assembly was cooling that USB Controller IC with a thermal pad in between. You could always stick one of those aluminum heat-sink that come with per-applied thermal;glue. It is kinda hot though. Maybe check out some images on the Asus website to see.
Well that would always be an option to be safe here!
Im in Australia, if I have any trouble with a board it's coming to you regardless of the cost. Finding somebody you can trust is a difficult thing
Damn i hoped that z170 pro would have the same issue as mine 😔 but this one seems to get to post while mine the "sb_pwr" and those lights above the gpu flicker instead of breathing. I sent to a repair shop it came back without the cpu fan and the cmos reset thingy 😂, but it's probably as you mentioned it could be the PCH I'll try find an adequate repair shop like you locally (which isn't going too well so far).

In my job site we have msi military grade board that was part of a pc on production machine and is dead, all voltages seem to be there but does not start, do you think that can be a bios issue?
We tried to change number and position of ram without result.
Dont have test board to see the post codes 😢

I have bought five of these ASUS Z170 (used) over the last two years. Only one had a dead chipset, the others had messed up bios chip. I flashed to new original winbond and scrapped old rom. Probably a windows firmware update scrambled them? Do you know something?
Really have no idea how the ROM chips die or get corrupted to be honest, ive heard that windows updates is sometimes the culprit, but nothing i can confirm!
