Abandoned $300 1956 Chevy Gets A New Front End

- In this episode we tackle to original worn out front suspension and steering. Old original ball joints, bushing and tie rods all needed to be replaced. Suspension bushing are always a pain to remove and replace, but make such a big difference in handling and ride quality.
After the front end was re-installed I upgraded to front disk brakes and all new wheel bearings. Lot's of labor spend this episode but not much money. Now the front end is ready for another 70 years of neglect.

tomorrow guy let's help double D's speed shop get up there 57,000 prescribers let's get that 57 Chevy to somebody really going to enjoy it come on guys let's do it Tell your friends let's get them out there you never know you might be the one to win it
Prescribers? I'm thinking you meant subscribers. It would be quite a chore to get 57,000 Doctors to join the channel. But I am surprised that Dan doesn't have way more subscribers. He's a great guy, with lots of great informative cool videos. I think he should have over 100,000 subs by now.
Thing I like about this channel is when rebuilding a Chevy he sometimes rebuilds the old engine or LS swaps it depending on time or money or goal.
@@davidsantos8206 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have
Send it down to Weird Beard for paint when ur done!
Two of my favourite channels right here!
Murr is an awesome guy. I lost my father when I was 28 years old. He was a lot like Murr always helpful always willing to go that extra mile. So for all the dads out there like Murr thank you.
@Last Name First lost my dad January 5th I feel you brother. We were in the hospital from the 28th of December yeah we slept there weird family tradition there was 61 of us they shut down part of the hospital for us. Then we had to stay in the church for 3 days. I learned a lot about southern Traditions that week.
The cheap fixes rather than spending a 1000 dollars is why I love this channel. Not everyone can drop 1000s on parts all the time.
Yup totally agree
Drum brakes on tri-fives with that single pot master is nothing short of a nightmare! I had the road run out on me twice with such a setup and my poor dad, who once had to borrow my Chevy for a few hundred miles while his company car was in the shop, had nightmares of mountain roads and no brakes for the rest of his life. No, slow-motion stuffing your beloved Chevy into a ditch or another car while thinking "there's no way out of this one", is enough to convert anyone.
Yeah. Disc brakes are a solid upgrade.
1956 our favorite tri-five! Awesome job!
When I was in high school 60 years ago, a friend of mine had a '56 with a 327 with ,I can't remember, dual quads or 3 2's and we had to chip in for gas if we wanted to cruise around. Gas was hard to come by on HS wages even at 25 cents a gallon but it was fun. I think his dad helped him build it.
i'm a fair bit younger but recall fondly chipping in for gas money too.
Ass,Grass or Gas nobody rides for free......
Soak those parts in some vinegar and water and the rust will come right off after a few day days. No wire wheels necessary. I did all the parts on my 58 chevy that way. Soaked them in a big plastic tub and the rust just falls right off and you have fresh clean metal ready for primer and paint. Yyou can work on other stuff while they soak for a few days. Longer soak removes more rust. i soaked some stuff for 7 days and it was like brand new when i took it out. I even did the coil springs which would be impossoble to get perfect with a wire wheel
Huh thats a good tip.
@@DDSpeedShop you can also try electrolysis with a bat’ry and some steel (non stainless) if you’ve got a tub of water and some washing soda.
Muratic acid
I was amazed how well vinegar and salt works... i have a wheelie bin with bunch of parts in it at the moment... all suface rust gone in 24 hours. 👍
That's a great tip👍
"He's always looking for some work". I need some of those in my life.
for most people this amount of progress, is a lifetimes effort, for dd its a couple of weeks
Dan’s the man with s plan
If I win the 57, it would give me a chance to go to Canada for the first time since I was seven years old. I am 73 now. I still remember how beautiful it was in 1954. Two recent wars were behind us and there were better days ahead. Going into this New Year, again we have better days ahead. Thanks for helping all of us to watch your projects during this horrible pandemic. God Bless you and yours! Stay safe all 🙏🏼
Man this is a sweet car
Always nervous dealing with the coils. I usually put a strap around a coil and to the cars frame just in case.
Lol, and he's just right in front of it just wiggling the crap out of it. I was ducking out of the way for him.
It's coming along nicely 👍👍🇨🇱
" You can do a lot of screwin' around for a $1000.00 ".... yup, I'm with ya brother
Love what you do! And how compassionate you are about it👍🏼
Disc brakes no brainer, great job wish I could still move around like that slide under cars
The one down vote was from a weirdo who has never rebuilt a smallblock on the kitchen table.lol love what you do man keep up the good work .
Haha thanks buddy
The disc brakes look wicked! It's hard to believe that anyone would want drums, instead of disc's. I'm in my 60s now, and I still love going fast! But I really like to be able to stop. You made the right choice bro. Really like the direction your going on the 56. Can't wait for the ehaxust. 3 inch?
Yeah discs are the way to go for sure. I'm not sure about the exhaust yet
She’s coming along beautifully, killer job dude 👌 love how you keep on keeping it real
Looking great
Great choices!! Stick with what works for you. Makes sense to me. Cheers!!
Love how you can do a normal guys ten year progression in an weekends time
Haha anyone can do it
Baddest builder on the planet right now. Motivation is through the roof with how much work gets done on this channel. Awesome and thanks for sharing.
Thanks man
I agree, drum brakes are cheaper, that's exactly why disk brakes were invented. And they stop approximately 30% quicker and there much easier to control under hard braking.
Thumbs Up Dan. The way you did it appeals to more buyers. When you go to sell it. Good job !
With your talent no need to pay up for a full qtr panel. Nice floor repair and disc brake upgrade a must, good job, Dan!!!
I’m not going to lie. New drinking game. Raise your cup every time lol
Proud of you for going completely through the suspension and brakes like you did. That's literally the foundation for driving satisfaction, enjoyment, and safety. If the motor is the heart of the car, the brakes and suspension must be the soul. Nice work.
Use coupling nuts on the all thread instead of regular ones, this will keep the threads from stripping with the stress.
Still a pain to put back in but way better.
That English "Record" Vice is a beautiful, quality piece...Worth some bucks...Nicely done...You have good friends.
Hotrodding has always been about customizing and improving vehicles; it's nice to see an improvement which is also actually less expensive than just replacing parts with new, original type parts.
I am glad you did the upgrade to disc brakes..
Your killin it this 56...looks great.
Keep up the great work, thanks for a great video
When you get to the interior, an old trick I remember from the late 60's & 70's was to use mid-size GM interiors. A friend used 65 GTO side panels and rear seat that he got from me for his tri-5 Chevy.
I think it’s coming along great got a lot of work done he did a hell of a job in a couple days looks great
Who would’ve guessed all this junk would hit 400,000 subscribers? I can remember feeling like I was a hot shot with 3,000 way back in high school! Little did I know that you guys would make this channel much more than I ever could imagine. Thank you for everything you’ve done!
Coming along nicely!
Looking good man, I think it going to turn out better than we all thought, not saying anything bad. But it's a hell of a great job man . NICE
murr is one heck of a cool guy. everyone should be so lucky to have a friend like him.
also, toss that 8.2 rear. talk about a weak link. love this project and the '56 is my least fav of the tri-5.
I have never seen a front end rebuild. Great segment.
Hire a senior citizen and keep them busy, sound advice! Just remember they will remind you that they have forgotten more than you'll ever know and they get cranky around 3:00 pm and will want to take a nap!🤣🤣
Just an awesome channel true craftsmen
Looks great!!! Awesome job 👏 👍 🙌 👌
"A hunnert and a half" - SO nice to listen to a Canadian accent. I just listened to a Brit absolutely butcher Diefenbaker's name!
Haha
Be honest with you other than a couple words she sounds just like an older ohioan
That motor looking good sitting in there doing good my Canadian brother
I'm convinced that rock auto is running a chop shop i cant figure how they can get all this stuff so cheap
@@fordsrule35 yeah expect its ac delco parts I got 4 ac delco rubber brakes hose for my 85 vette project they were 34$ with shipping that gets you one in town and it aint delco
I just never get tired of watching your channel. Great budget builds, and great video work setting up the time lapse vids. Keep up the great content!
Great job. I started my 55 second series pickup in 1982. Most of this stuff wasn’t available back then. Powered disk front and rear and modern suspension is amazing.
Dude, you really take me back to my youth, pulling wrenches on the TriFives! I was doing what you’re doing back in the early ‘70’s! It’s almost like I “looked behind the curtain” and saw myself and my buds doing what you’re doing!! And remember, Disc brakes were still new to us on regular passenger cars! There weren’t any Conversion kits then- you had to scrounge all the parts from a junkyard , find a suitable donor car and get all of your disc brake parts off of it AND restore/repair those parts , and THEN you could try to fit them in! We didn’t have those handy special brackets to mount them on - you had to MODIFY MODIFY AND MODIFY!!! It was a real challenge. I do enjoy your videos young sir, keep em coming! I’m so glad to see these TriFives being put back right and on the road again !!!
Front end turned out great with good brakes!
I've always wanted a '56. Now I'm 62 and still don't have one. You'll do it justice I'm sure.
Wassup it was good to see your comments on the restored channel
I’m glad you made it a driver instead a Sunday racer. Good job on the front end. A lot of people wouldn’t have tackled a job like that. You made it look easy.
Nice progress and a very safe way to work on the front end it never pays to cut corners with springs!!!! Good upgrade your nuts not to do it!!!!!
You completed alot of work successful🖒🖒🇨🇦🇺🇸 in a short time and Great Vid again,,, Love the 56 !! Upgrades are always the way !!
Every time I remove coil springs, I run a ratchet strap down through the spring with a little slack to prevent the spring from flying anywhere. Princess Auto straps are your friend!
Thats a slick tech tip for sure.
@@DDSpeedShop just slack enough not to bind when releasing them, and when putting them back together I ratchet it as tight as I can. Had one pop free on me using just a cheap blue strap and it held. I was lucky :) I usually use a heavy duty strap though.
Like the disc brake conversion tutorial. Also like the running cost of the car after each video. Very informative.
Not much left to be said.... great job! Another great video, Dan. Old school all the way
Can't wait to see it finished!!🤘🤘
I used to have a coil spring remover back in the day when I was wrenching everyday. It worked real good. Yes they will kill you if it gets away from you.
I remember my buddies and I wrestling with ball joints on my '57. There was a moment of awed silence when the coil spring came out. I think even the radio stopped. But nobody was hurt, and then the cursing resumed. lol Fun times!
Haha its always fun along as noone gets hurt
The way I do Tie rods is I measure them and put new ones back the same they are pretty damn close to right
"You saw it dont be a creep show"🤣🤣🤣
Getting fancy! Thanks for another great vid-ya!
Glad to see the project coming along.
It is always good to see someone with build goals in mind, which I can relate to.
Thank you two for the great YT channels, D and D.... 👌
Had a 55 210 2 door 6 cylinder automatic. Wish I still had it and could be rebuilding mine thanks to your PRACTICAL DOWNTO EARTH videos. Loving your videos. Keep em coming!!
"Back in my day we just died when the drum master cylinder failed, like men." 🤣
Coil/finger story: 67 Pontiac LeMans, changing ball joints in barracks parking lot. Had spring compressed with tool. As I pulled it from frame pocket, tool let loose, top of spring, caught my finger, jammed it into frame rail. All hell broke loose! Finger immediately swole to golf ball size, blood rush made me faint and I fell into the wheel well, crumpled in there. It was on a weekend and no one around. I woke to a very heart throbbing finger, just all out pain, hobbled back to the barracks. Was in total shock for a few hours. Got 5 shots of Bacardi down real fast and went out to party that night. But wow, recovery was hell. I got the Pontiac fixed up.. though.
Wow. Thats a crazy story. Could have been worse i guess haha
you did it all about as good as you can for the next guy. Most folks want to drive them on the street and a straight axle is just not comfortable for any extended cruising. This with that engine and intake and headers will be a perfect Friday Night, weekend cruiser. And a lot of folks want that experience. Great sheet metal work on the floors. Wish i could gotten my granddads late 40s Ford Pickup, is was holier than a church but i loved it. Hey you guys stay warm and well. Appreciate the videos, Dennis in Virginia
Sweet! Looking good, Dan.
I wish I had your motivation Dan!!!
Thanks for sharing your adventures! The diy tool for spring is a great idea! Thanks for sharing !!!
Hey Dan
I was getting squeamish watching you install that spring, cannot imagine what was going through your mind... 😬😉
Much respect on the; reclaimed, repurposing, using what there is around you for parts and work ethic.
Enjoying this build very much.
Take care and stay safe🙂
Great Dad! I've had a Record for 20-years and it still has tight play...
Hey Dan,Rick from Massachusetts. From one car guy to another. Excellent work. Restoring these tri-five Chevy's keeping them somewhat stock with a few creature comforts is awesome. T.Y.
Thanks for watching!
Very cool video and project thanks for posting!!!😎👍🏼❤️🇺🇸
That was very nice of your buddy to kick you another Vise... You are Really making some Progress on this Sacked out Old Chevy... Mostly not Sacked Out anymore. Good Job!... Dan
Definitely a nice upgrade in my opinion.
I did a complete rebuild on the front end of my 1977 El Camino, it cost me over $1,000 and I spent over 5 days working on it. It was a fun experience though and it drives better than my 2019 Tacoma did. So I'm happy
Yeah its worth it for sure
Another fantastic video Dan. The car is coming along nicely. Keep it up 👍
Looking good.👍
Great job ! Nice to see the hole process.
Looks awesome and done the way I would do it! Great video
You move fast man. That motor was a steal for only $800.
Yeah. Thats why I snapped it up
Not gunna BS spring installs is pretty scary , I’ve done it a couple times . I must say Mer is Clutch . Great DIY vid Dan . Cheers
I'm kinda rambling im not going to lie lmao 🤣 awesome
Nice Dan!!!
I love seeing a job done right. Its here on this channel too with some great tips as well and its free advice.
Keep it going, looking good. Great work!
You never fail to impress!!
I really like your work ethic, you just keep plugging away at it almost every day til its done, very entertaining and informative.
I like it! Doing things right on a budget, I love the shade tree feel of this channel
Thanks for the video Dan I’m getting ready to do the same thing to my 55 front end I learned a lot from you you’re the best for the common guy on a budget!
You are doing a great job ! Looking good.
I remember doing a lot of them where I had to run a chain over the frame and under the jack to compress the spring. It was always some big block station wagon with AC spring (Chevelle maybe?) that was twice as tall as the stock springs. Fun times!
Dan as always great job. I love watching your videos and hope to learn something. My 55 is covered for winter. No garage here in Minnesnowta so need to wait for better weather. Keep on keeping on!
That looks really good and at a great price and better brakes getting closer still can't wait to hear ot
It lol
It looks awesome. Cant wait to see the front clip on it
Just did this 2 weeks ago on my 69 firebird. Those springs are the most daunting aspect of the job for sure. Nice video!
A guy I knew in high school in the 70's was replacing front end parts and the spring blew out, he had it chained up with lightweight dog chain, which was no match for the spring. End result 4 broken fingers, and other injuries including a messed up face and numerous bruises. He was lucky not to have been killed.
