Virtual Desktop sucks major ###, because it doesn't work if you have a proper anti virus, which is outragous. To spend 20 dollars on something that does not work, unless you disable all kind of security is absurd.

The low GPU memory warning is a known bug in HL Alyx and comes up when using DX11. If you switch to the Vulcan API, restart, switch back to DX11 it will go away.

If your car turned on and allowed you to go to some stores but if you pulled into a Grocery store parking lot it started dumping fuel out the back and stuttering until you left would you "be happy" that your car still gets you to fast food?
I wonder if changing from HEVC to AV1 would change GPU usage. I'm thinking it would be minor.
with a 3090 you can max the render resolution easily on the quest. Your problem might have been either that you also had it boosted through steam vr (Make sure its at 1.0 through steam vr and only maxed through metas software.) or your router. Do you have a dedicated router exclusively for airlink? Did you optimize the settings? Is it 5ghz? wifi6, 6e etc?
that totally makes sense, i remember that causing issues for me in the past.
@@PhutureRed Yes you should be using a router not a wifi adapter. The router for airlink should be used EXCLUSIVELY for airlink as well. So no other devices connected to it through wifi. It should also be connected to your modems wan port via ehternet and then directly to your pc with ethernet as well. Also there are a couple tips and tricks to boosting the quality and performance through your routers settings and oculus its self. Just search up a video here on youtube.

when doing the comparison, is your desktop output set to only the VR headset or is it reflecting/extending the output on your PC's monitor as well?
Theoretically, using multiple outputs can severely diminish, even divide your GPU's usable "bandwidth" in non-dedicated VR headsets.
Outputting the same frame, albeit cropped, to the monitor would have negligible if not imperceptible affect in performance. The visual quality difference on the quest is likely some post processing by the quest before displaying it on the tilted screen.

Thanks for the direct link to the Oculus PC App! For some reason, Meta deleted the section from their website, and it was impossible to find it through their menu, without bumping into a "404 not found" page. 👍
thank you SO much bro, when i was connecting to my PC with cable it was flickering horribly in the bright areas, the framerate setting on the desktop app fixed it 100% moving from a rift s to the quest 3 is a big jump holy

I have oculus app running on my Pc but my headset can’t find it so I can’t get the code in either air linking or cable. It only gives me a notification saying if I want to see file. But not ‘ Pair’ it there something I can do? Do I need a better pc or monitor?
ok. so i only have wifi5 and usb 3.1 instead of 3.2. does this mean no watter what, i will get kind of a crappy experience with pcvr? because if so, doing extra upgrades to combat that, would make even more better headsets like an aero the better option especially when other headset are comfortable out of the box, without and aftermarket strap for another 100 bucks
Great video! I was 100% convinced that cable would be the way to go! I'm coming from the og cv1. I had no idea what to expect performance wise. I am currently running an i-9900k with a 3060. I'll be lucky to reach the settings that you're running
So using a 4070ti will it run ok and or similar to what is shown in your video also im pretty sure my gpu has av1 which might help.
I am having some issues with pcvr games like 'Saints and Sinners' not controllable with the Quest 3 (HMD message on S+S menu). The buttons aren't working. Worked with my OG Vive but not on Quest. I really don't want to double dip and buy it again. Have been reading that Airlink is better with this issue compared to VD. Opinions seem to suggest VD can be fiddly and Airlink better with controls. Does anyone have a workaround? So Guy Godin can't provide a fix within VD?
So i have tested my setup 2 times so far. i use virtual desktop and i run the quest 3 through the prismxr bridge which is plugged directly into the pc and no internet going through that only the signal from the quest 3. so far its doing well and that includes running obs for recording. i have an older i9 9900k and a 4070ti. i did see a hickup in Ultra so i dropped it to Hi on VDesktop, that seemed to help a lot. Still tweaking my settings though to get it just right. I do miss the ease of my index and running a cable which was much simpler but the clarity of this headset is just too good. Great video
Do you have any bottlenecking from your I9? We are running the same processor, but I am running a 3060 and have been wanting to upgrade to a 4070 yet. I've read conflicting information about how the 4070 runs with an I9 9900k
@@brandonler5120 I'm sure there is but I'm able to run most demanding VR games without issues. I will be doing a full upgrade with a 5 series and updated cpu eventually but for now it works pretty good. I use the AV1 codec I believe it's called and so far no issues except when running unreal engine 5 games I get an out of memory error after an hour. Even guys with 4090 get the same error.
I just have a 5ghz router and tried airlink, it seems not to bad most of the time, but faster moving games like beatsaber tend to get choppy sometimes then go faster to catch up. Think virtual desktop will help this a bit? or will i have to get a 6e router
i had that issue on a router that others were on. I ended up getting a dedicated router for just my PC and headset, when I did this I upgraded to a TP AX1800

No that I saw, you can open up your desktop monitor and make it huge so it blocks it out. I've don't spend much time on that screen I'm in and right into a game asap 😂
Does anyone know what to do? I have the quest 3 and im using the beta version of steam vr but anytime I tired to load a game today it crashes before it loads and I end up back at the steam vr room. This problem started out of nowhere
Honestly when i tested out airlink with the quest3 there was a lot of lag so it is better to use a link cable as the connection is more stable.

i'm thinking about getting a Quest 3 sometime in the future, and I plan to use PCVR pretty much everyday. Would you personally recommend a link cable or virtual desktop? I plan to use the Quest 3 for casual gaming, recording, and streaming -- but I also would like the best graphics and lowest latency despite the GPU drain. I also have a pully system in my room. If you can handle the cable management go cable, it'll be the lowest latency offered. If you decide to go wireless make sure you scoop up a wifi6 router and connect your pc ethernet to it, then your headset wirelessly. I keep mine on my wall next to my playspace
6e is best but they're PRICEY plus you cant go with a mesh router as it causes issues with airlink.@@legendarymark112
yeah I have a good 6 access point and the latency is terrible, so upgrade time. Rock solid on my Q2 but not Q3.
Just wondering, I saw an optical TB cable (for futureproofing) would that be something you recommend? What cable do you use? I am planning to upgrade my system and I keen to go with the cable solution too simply because of simplicity and better latency.

Does airlink work with macOS? I have an M1 pro macbook and its suprisingly powerful and ive played plenty of non vr games without any issues on it. Im pretty confident it could handle some pcvr games, Im just curious if its compatible yet?

Is there a virtual environment home screen that you can go into while connected to your pc other than that grey grid like home environment? My Rift CV1 which was for PC wired use only had a really cool home environment by default.
They used to have Oculus Home but I think that's been removed for steam vr you can launch into steam home

I tried both and cabled is for sure the way to go. In half-life alyx maxed out settings and it runs buttery smooth 4080 rtx
vd is much better, cable sucks just ruins the immersion movement u can trip over it you feel it on u or above when u turn around etc specially if u are active and dont just sit around then it doesnt differ much from regular flat screen gaming experience, half life alyx with a geniunely good wifi 6e router and ISP roughly 1000/500 D/U does the job really well for me

How do you make the screens full screen? Like virtual desktop or does it depend on the game? I’m tired of seeing it on a screen that floats
Use the left menu button to open your VR games list in virtual desktop. Pick from that list of games. If it still doesn't launch in VR mode then I would recommend opening steam VR from virtual desktop then launching your steam VR game from there.
On pc if i use airlink and go to steam or wanna see my desktop i always getting black screen with big orange round logo with ! in middle ? is there some solution for it ?
Thats just saying its not active, you just click on the monitor and itll show you your desktop. Theres also a "show desktop" inside of steamVR as well on the bottom left side in case you want to try that as well
I dont get a pairing code whenever I do the air link. I see my computer and everything but I don't see a pair code that pops up.

Hi FNH8iT. Ive run into a problem connecting my meta quest 3 and play Half Life Alyx specifically. Ive been able to play 2 other games through airlink and steamvr (KajakVR and Propanation), but I run into a crash error message when trying to run Half Life Alyx: "Error: Hmd Not Found Presence Failed (126)".
My computer is all new and has better specs than recommended for both the game and for Meta Quest 3, so what could be the problem? My ASUS router is only wifi 5. Is that the problem and reason why this "hmd not found presence failed" pops up, or is it because I need to buy a cable to run a stronger game? I am just really confused why I can run some games, but not HL:Alyx...
Weird, one thing you could try is setting the headset as active for openXR. It's in the oculus PC app I believe under General Settings.

My rog ally with 6850 xg mobile egpu works well with 8:26 alyx on medium in vdxr and most settings on high or ultra in the game settings. Your 3090 should be testing through it no problem.

Are you on 5ghz network? There are many variables to troubleshoot. PC Ethernet plugged into the router you are sharing. 5ghz connected to the router and if there's many devices on that same network it cuts into the bandwidth. The other variant is your PC hardware. It will require upper middle gear for sure to have a smooth experience.
After I put the confirmation code in and I go into that little room it’s extremely laggy and I can’t do anything because it’s lagging to much any way I can fix that?
Adjusting the resolution in your devices in the meta PC app, or its possible your router isn't up for the job

Dlink makes a usb device for Airlink. I think meta sells it on their website
I can play with cables for driving and flight sims, but all this GPU power spent on encoding (which adds latency) when it could just have a DisplayPort...disappointing. I am still stuck with my Reverb G2.

If you're OK with drilling some holes in your ceiling, there's an amazing option for cable management. You'll install 3 hooks in the ceiling and use pulleys attached to the cable so you still have all the freedom but you won't be tripping over the wire. I'm looking into the quest 3 because I found out I can just use my pc with it too, which is what I want because I'm currently using the Rift S so my entire library is on PC. It's not yet entirely clear because you mentioned part of the game is rendered by the goggles? Or did I misunderstand? Anyway great video thanks for the help

I bought a quest link cable that has a power by USB-C option. It says you have to plug the power in first before you connect the headset. I have to have my headset off when I plug it in or the PC keeps disconnecting. Is anyone having a similar issue? I wanted to troubleshoot this before I get too aggravated
Possibly too many devices on your USB 3.0 bandwidth? I have had 3.0 usb ports not work and had to run it directly to my video card Type c port. Hope this helps
Total noob question. I am primarily interested in the mq3 to mirror what’s on my work laptop, but due to security reasons, I am unable to download third party software. Would the cable option work on any laptop for the sole purpose of mirroring screens?
unfortunately you will need to download the oculus pc app to get that to work

I have no prior vr experience, but I just bought a Quest 3 to play iRacing. Should be fun trying to set it up.
That's awesome 😎 if you end up playing anything with full locomotive movement just know most go through a phase of motion sickness. For me when I moved around with the left joystick forward and backward it took a few weeks to overcome. Natural rotation though helped this. So turning my body IRL but using the left joystick for moving forward and back was where I landed for no motion sickness. Enjoy your VR experiences 🍻

Yeah I had a hard time getting my link cable to connect the first time.
No cables or USB ports were working and then airlink wasn't even working. Rebooted the computer and nothing still wasn't working. Turned off the quest 3 and the computer and turned both back on and it started working.

I run such a setup as you described. It's good, if you choose the right balance in settings in VD you average around 30-35ms latency, if set up badly it would be 35-50ms which I am not a fan of. I can go lower than 30ms by lowering resolution and graphics etc, but I prefer everything to look good so I don't lower most of the settings, only if a game is really heavy. I always balance mbps from 100-200 depending on a game I am playing. I am new to VR, so I wanna try wired connection for watching movies, I like how it looks via wifi but I am sure it can look even better

The quest 3 ads showed linking to a laptop and getting more displays in VR. Do you know what app does this?
I believe that is the Meta Remote Desktop app used in Horizon Worlds, i never use this though but I have seen ads for it

I had an update recently hit and I had to reinstall the drivers via meta quest site. It didn't read my mic and virtual headset audio. After the driver install everything worked again

what are your top replayable games nowadays? I used to have a quest 2 and sold it, now i want to come back to vr with quest 3 and play breachers mainly but doesnt seem like alot has come out other than that.
I'm a shooters lover so for me it's Breachers, contractors, gun raiders, and sometimes population one. Rhythm Games would be Best Saber, Audio Trip and Synth Riders

not on quest 3 as it demands more power than what the usb power from the PC pushes. It dies around 3 hrs for me.
Great video man, just ordered a new Wifi 6E router for use with my Quest 3. I love Virtual Desktop but wow my current router is horrible, the latency is insane. I've had to use a cable and yeah I'd rather now.

It almost looks like im actually in the game, on Quest 2 It was clear that I was looking trough a VR headset due to the lenses. But Pancake lenses are huge difference

@@sleit0n yes, latency is lower with cable. But you won’t notice it that much if you use a WiFi 6E router.
But cable doesn’t work with Virtual Desktop, and virtual desktop runs games better for me. I also want it to be wireless

Looks like the native steam link application was not tested? That is probably the most direct way and I would assume offers the best experience for wireless.
I have owned Virtual Desktop for a long time and will try that as well just to see if it offers any benefit.
Have Wifi 6E access points (two of them) and desktop running a 4090 hardwired to 10gb fiber optic so we should be ready to rock once I get the quest 3.
This video was put out quite a ways before steam link dropped. Steam link is a very smooth experience and feels much better than airlink. Comparing to virtual desktop though, Virtual Desktop seems to have more options for fine tuning the experience around the users hardware.

I have but a mere 2060 so I expect to compromise on some graphical "fluff". Just got a Q3 less than a week ago and tried steamlink over air. That was particularly unpleasant. Next I'll download the Oculus PC app and see how cabled goes.

Im so confused, I launched the application, and it tells me to plugin a USB 3.0 2.0 AND HDMI cable, so I plug the link cable from my headset to usb 3.0 port, and nothing happens, can't proceed.
make use you have the Link Cable option selected on the headset, also i found if you have too many devices on usb 3.0 itll not work, it requires pretty much all of your 3.0 power
Can you play wired and at the same time charging ? My meta batteries runs after an hour?
That's dependent on your computer and particular to the port you are plugging into. Mine didn't have enough to charge and play so I run wireless so I can use my Bobo m3 strap to charge while I play

When I try to launch Automobilista 2, trough Virtual Desktop (from within the app, as reccommended), it launches the game as a virtual screen. When I launch it from within the Steam app (not steam VR) and select 'launch in Oculus VR mode' it launches in Steam VR mode. Not as a virtual screen so everything works fine, but why doesn't it launch in Oculus VR mode? Probably because I don't have the Oculus app installed.
So I wonder, would installing the Oculus app prevent it from launching as a virtual screen?
And is launching the game in Oculus VR mode prefarable over launching it in Steam VR mode?
I'm asking this, because in the past (with Rift S), as soon as I installed the Oculus app, it would always launch in Oculus mode. I couldn't even start in Steam VR mode. So no way back I guess if I make this choice.
You may need to set oculus as active for openXR. On oculus PC app go to general settings then select active OpenXR Runtime

@@bullsback23hardware is so much better. Only negative atm is theres nothing new software-wise. U can play all the same games on your Quest 2. So if u are deciding to move up a tier I would say do so in couple of months or even later when there are Quest 3 specific/exclusive games (hope there will be)

Virtual Desktop sucks major ###, because it doesn't work if you have a proper anti virus, which is outragous. To spend 20 dollars on something that does not work, unless you disable all kind of security is absurd.
Agreed. AVG Pro throws a fit. I either need to disable it (not good), or figured-out how to add "exceptions" to AVG.
who uses antivirus software nowadays, Windows Defender is basically all you need.

Saying that Windows defender is a "good" anti virus program is painfully wrong. Windows defender does not protect you from phising, trojans, ransomeware and other rats. If all you do is browse UA-cam and TikTok, then yes it will work, but if you wanna download software and files, then you are in big trouble...

when it comes to files, you can use VirusTotal to check what multiple antivirus databases think of the file.
not to mention services that through virtualization automatically detects what actions the executable performs and if they resemble anything malicious.
i don't know what files you deal with that you need to constantly scan them, unless you always work with files hosted on dodgy websites, but you do you.

Is it possible to record gameplay on the quest 3 using PCVR but using your own mic as I’ve heard how awful the built in mic is on the quest 3. I have a Corsair headset with a pretty good sounding mic which I would love to use. Is it possible to use the Corsair mic instead??
You can cast to your PC and use obs to capture your gameplay. You can run your mic through your pc to capture your voice.

So can I play non vr steam games on virtual desktop. So let’s say play ratchet and clank using a Bluetooth Xbox controller running wired off my laptop? How would it look and run?
👀 if you like a lot of latency go for it, you can also just download xbox cloud native to your headset and play without linking to your PC but that is not what this video was about

Yeah, that game isn't high on action like contractors or breachers, Id go with wireless honestly. No wires to tangle up in but wired should work just fine.
Does battery do better when attached to cable?
it takes longer for it to die but it needs more than 20V to charge while playing from what ive been reading.
I would choose Virtual Desktop but I'd rather go into PCVR dedicated google. Valve Index or maybe next iteration of it in the future.

One of my problems is that Airlink loads Steam VR before my Oculus game.
Aahhh to prevent steam from loading first go to your oculus pc app, go to settings and general. Select Set Oculus XR Active. I probably should have put that in the video my bad
