I had similar experience with my wife in regards for meditation and aquariums :) Her scolding is a sure sign of her paying attention to what I do - it also means that she is still crazy in love with me and jealous to fish ;) At one point, I suggested to move some of my aquariums into our bedroom - do not ever suggest such things!
i love your channel because these are things anybody could do to enjoy and learn about the hobby. this is such a better place to start than with a betta or goldfish in a bowl. i myself am still using filters and lights in most of my tanks but i've also got some old plastic peanut jar aquariums like yours. i find them just as interesting.

I seriously love your videos, I have done alot these similar tanks for my betta fish. They love it. It's the closest I can get them to wild setting. After only being in the new aquarium when I get them home. The next morning they have made big bubble nests, which means they are extremely happy with their tanks. I own 19 male betta's. They all except for 3 came from Walmart. I didn't pay for a single one, that only fuels the need to send a horrendous amount fish to our lil store and our area. Most of them die. The ones I have where all really sick and on death's door. I have saved all but one. He had Popeye that got way out of control. It was too late for treatment. I was able to give him a good month of life before his eye got out of control. Lol sorry I got off track. Any ways. Keep up the awesome videos plz. I love glass shrimp. They play a important roll in my tanks. They are a food source, and they clean up the flooring of my Aquariums, be eating uneaten foods, and such.
I have Never liked small aquariums... Never understood whats so great about nano aquariums, i love to see big ponds overpopulated with fish... Untill now... Your aquariums are so great! I have seen some of your videos... In one of them you talk about your desire of a %100 self sustainable small aquarium, I hope one of this days you finally achieve it

Thank you very much! There are could be number of reasons for troubles in aquariums.... The number one cause of most problems is overfeeding. I still have to make a video explanation on this matter...been working on it for long. Anyway, if you have well planted aquarium with fish that eats plants (most fish food flakes are made largely from plants) than try to reduce feeding amount and frequency. It may helps in many ways ;) All the best!
Hey i love your videos and breed guppys myself. Males really stress out females trying to breed so i would suggest doing a 1 male to 2 or 3 females ratio, so the male isn’t pestering just 1 female. if you have too many males make a male only tank for them. thats what i do! happy fish keeping! : )

I love your philosophy and agree completely. I have a few tanks with plants, but I am getting conflicting information on whether to do water changes or not. I do not change the water in my pond, I only top off. But my nano I change every week 10-20% just in case. My breeding tanks I am setting up an overflow filter system but do not plan on water changes.

I see you are succesful with this technique, im glad. So, for this kind of setup, do we have to worry about water condition? Like ammonia and nitrate level?
I do not worry about water conditions. But I do regular observations (daily, weekly, monthly) on regular basis taking pictures and videos (not only for youtube). Regular observations and timely corrections are the keys of success in keeping any and all aquariums. I spoke about observations and what I do to improve quality in number of videos...I make changes year after year based on what I learn from experiments and observations I made through them. Through those experiments I learnt that land plants growing with roots in water are very powerful in taking dissolved in water chemicals we don't want there - as result all my aquariums are gardens now. I learnt that common green algae is the most powerful filter on our planet that feeds on ammonia and nitrates at different stages of development. I learnt that many tiny aquatic critters feed on algae. So I populate my aquariums with critters and plants and...well, I made sustainable aquarium gardens with fish. Those aquariums can be left without my attention for weeks - I still prefer to check on them daily :) And I keep improving my routines. No, I don't worry about water conditions in particular - I worry about the whole aquarium. Changes in water conditions happens all the time through the day. Observations help to understand the cause of the changes and gives me ideas what I have to do or not to do. Overfeeding is often the main cause of most problems in aquariums including high ammonia and nitrate levels. Keep your fish hungry (not starving) looking for food growing in your aquarium is the most effective way of preventing spikes in ammonia and nitrates levels.

I just want to know why u are not changing water in your aquariums? Because everything that I read about small aquariums it needs full water change at least twice a week
Just to be clear - I used to do water changes on different schedule. I stopped changing water in 2016. Changing water is a drastic step in aquarium fish care that should be reserved for emergency situations. Most of emergency situations can and should be prevented with proper care. I spend years of learning how to provide the most natural care. And as a result I have now sustainable aquariums with fish that require very simple care and does not involves water changes, man-made filters or air pumps. Guppies are tropical fish. Which means they should be fine in tropical range temperature that have little to no fluctuation (no fluctuation is the main thing for that matter). 65-70 F is fine if that is your room temperature at winter. Warmer temperature in Summer would just prompt them for breeding ;)
0:20 I have 3 of those, they are a "biscotti-cookie" container. Listen to this man, he knows what's up. Half of my plants are in recycled plastic containers in one form or another.

Getting wild samples is always full of surprises :) Let the plants grow in your nursery for about a week or more before adding fish. You may want to get some aquatic plants and samples of water from the pond/lake/river where you catching the fish. Wild plants are home for many aquatic critters - those could be dangerous or very beneficial ;) Either way your wild fish would most likely be accustomed to those critters and the plants. Hello, I believe you are a fellow New Yorker as per the "Metro Card plastic scraper ? Love your stuff , and maybe we will meet ? I am in the hobby of turning "china cabinets into reptile enclosures . With custom Plexiglass tanks in the back of the top 2 sections/enclosures . And a Rubbermaid pond in the huge bottom cabinet area . I do have a pump and heater in all three , as the snake goes in one , the chameleons drop turds in another and a turtle in the bottom . Guess I will make a video myself , someday ? I am 56 and not at all , tech savvy . Love your simplicity , and videos . Nature does take care of itself . BUT ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Can we TAKE CARE OF NATURE ?

Most likely one (or many) water parameters in this aquarium is not suitable for your shrimp. I would setup a new nursery to quarantine new shrimp and every other new "thing" you may get from pet stores or anywhere else. Make it simple, without any plastic decoration...use just natural things like rocks, plants and dechlorinated water. Let that aquarium sit for a couple weeks or so before adding shrimp into it. Though, you can add snails or some other tiny aquatic critters much earlier. I just start my aquarium by a pasta sauce bottle. It is quite small so I decide not to put too many creature into it. I got two small shrimp and one small suckermouth catfish from the river. Also I put some Egeria densa which floating under the water. I am wondering should I put some gravel and plant the Egeria densa on the gravel? On the other hand, is it have enough light source for the Egeria densa creating oxygen if I put it under the normal indoor LED light? I am also wondering should I put some duckweed on the surface or it would consume more oxygen in the water?
I like to add gravel in all my aquariums for number of reasons. It sure helps rooted plants to hold in place. Gravel is great for critters to hide. It adds microelements into water. And it holds together any accumulated over long period of time waste. Different LED bulbs emit light of different lightwaves and power...There are LED bulbs designed for plants (red lightwaves). Duckweed gets nutrition dissolved in water, and it gets oxygen and CO2 mostly from atmosphere. I add duckweed in all my nurseries ;)

I am so regret to watch your videos this late and didn't have enough time for the Egeria, algae, critters (I haven't seen any seed shrimps yet) stabilized before letting the shrimps lived in. I hope my shrimps can survive in this bottle. Right now, I cannot see any bubbles released by the Egeria. I am not sure if the shrimps get enough oxygen to breathe. I will try to improve the environment as your advice if they can survive in next few days.
Elodea grows in fresh water ponds and rivers. Fast growing intrusive plant banned in many states. Warm time of the year is the best time to look for it in your local ponds and lakes. Or look for it in local or online pet stores. Though, pet stores in NYC do not sell it (it's banned here). I bought Elodea for my aquariums on Ebay. Happy holidays to you and your family!
@@wolfhound2 I've never seen them in this cold weather. They may be there, but just hard to find... Early Spring through later Autumn is the best time to pick them up in my experience.
I let all new aquarium sit for a couple weeks (some times months) without fish. Only add some snails, scuds and whatever tiny critters you can find. It takes a couple weeks for bacteria to settle. You don't have to feed snails and scuds at that time - they will feed on plants and algae. Weeks later you add fish in perfectly set aquarium and start feeding them small amounts of food. That's all to it.
19 with fish. I am actually reducing number of aquariums with fish for 3 main reasons: lack of time, they all in my living room, new projects need space ;) All the best!

I build aquariums for fish based on the fish size. The narrowest side of any aquarium is 3 or more times the fish size. It works very well for fish and...I deem the same should work for most live creatures. Surely, there are doomed to be some exceptions, I can think of couple of such right now. But shrimps seems to be fine ;) All the best!
I buy food in boxes from Wholefood, Costco, Trader Joes and etc. Bacteria grows persistently everywhere. In water, on the land and in air. Bacteria is on my and yours hands and inside our guts. Different types and strains of bacteria are literally everywhere. As to where it originally come from...it is a question about origin of life. Hmm...I will let you know the answer as soon as I could figure it out myself ;)

Thanks to them I don't have to change water and etc. Since 2016 ;) I deem your question is more about man made filters. Well, you can use them too. I did. Choose right plants for your aquarium to start with ;) I prefer to grow mix of fast, slow and very slow growing plants in each aquarium. Planted, submerged and floating plants. La observación ayuda a detectar problemas y hacer ajustes oportunos. Use una tarjeta de plástico para fregar algas de las paredes dobles. Recoge tantas algas como puedas. Lave las paredes dobles antes de volver a colocarlas en el acuario. Alimenta las algas recolectadas a las mascotas en acuarios. ¡Los guppies y muchos otros peces y animales, incluidas las personas, también comen diferentes tipos de algas! I have Never liked small aquariums... Never understood whats so great about nano aquariums, i love to see big ponds overpopulated with fish... Untill now... Your aquariums are so great! There are could be number of reasons for troubles in aquariums....
The number one cause of most problems is overfeeding. I still have to make a video explanation on this matter...been working on it for long. Anyway, if you have well planted aquarium with fish that eats plants (most fish food flakes are made largely from plants) than try to reduce feeding amount and frequency. It may helps in many ways ;)

Hey i love your videos and breed guppys myself. Males really stress out females trying to breed so i would suggest doing a 1 male to 2 or 3 females ratio, so the male isn’t pestering just 1 female. if you have too many males make a male only tank for them. thats what i do! happy fish keeping! : )

I love your philosophy and agree completely. I have a few tanks with plants, but I am getting conflicting information on whether to do water changes or not. I do not change the water in my pond, I only top off. But my nano I change every week 10-20% just in case. My breeding tanks I am setting up an overflow filter system but do not plan on water changes.

I see you are succesful with this technique, im glad. So, for this kind of setup, do we have to worry about water condition? Like ammonia and nitrate level?
I do not worry about water conditions. But I do regular observations (daily, weekly, monthly) on regular basis taking pictures and videos (not only for youtube). Regular observations and timely corrections are the keys of success in keeping any and all aquariums. I spoke about observations and what I do to improve quality in number of videos...I make changes year after year based on what I learn from experiments and observations I made through them. Through those experiments I learnt that land plants growing with roots in water are very powerful in taking dissolved in water chemicals we don't want there - as result all my aquariums are gardens now. I learnt that common green algae is the most powerful filter on our planet that feeds on ammonia and nitrates at different stages of development. I learnt that many tiny aquatic critters feed on algae. So I populate my aquariums with critters and plants and...well, I made sustainable aquarium gardens with fish. Those aquariums can be left without my attention for weeks - I still prefer to check on them daily :) And I keep improving my routines.
No, I don't worry about water conditions in particular - I worry about the whole aquarium. Changes in water conditions happens all the time through the day. Observations help to understand the cause of the changes and gives me ideas what I have to do or not to do.
Overfeeding is often the main cause of most problems in aquariums including high ammonia and nitrate levels. Keep your fish hungry (not starving) looking for food growing in your aquarium is the most effective way of preventing spikes in ammonia and nitrates levels.

I just want to know why u are not changing water in your aquariums? Because everything that I read about small aquariums it needs full water change at least twice a week
Just to be clear - I used to do water changes on different schedule. I stopped changing water in 2016.
Changing water is a drastic step in aquarium fish care that should be reserved for emergency situations. Most of emergency situations can and should be prevented with proper care. I spend years of learning how to provide the most natural care. And as a result I have now sustainable aquariums with fish that require very simple care and does not involves water changes, man-made filters or air pumps.

Okay, you keep your home very warm. My house is much cooler especially in the winter.
Guppies are tropical fish. Which means they should be fine in tropical range temperature that have little to no fluctuation (no fluctuation is the main thing for that matter). 65-70 F is fine if that is your room temperature at winter. Warmer temperature in Summer would just prompt them for breeding ;)

Getting wild samples is always full of surprises :)
Let the plants grow in your nursery for about a week or more before adding fish. You may want to get some aquatic plants and samples of water from the pond/lake/river where you catching the fish. Wild plants are home for many aquatic critters - those could be dangerous or very beneficial ;) Either way your wild fish would most likely be accustomed to those critters and the plants.

Why my shrimps die each time I move them into the tank
Most likely one (or many) water parameters in this aquarium is not suitable for your shrimp. I would setup a new nursery to quarantine new shrimp and every other new "thing" you may get from pet stores or anywhere else. Make it simple, without any plastic decoration...use just natural things like rocks, plants and dechlorinated water. Let that aquarium sit for a couple weeks or so before adding shrimp into it. Though, you can add snails or some other tiny aquatic critters much earlier.

I just start my aquarium by a pasta sauce bottle. It is quite small so I decide not to put too many creature into it. I got two small shrimp and one small suckermouth catfish from the river. Also I put some Egeria densa which floating under the water. I am wondering should I put some gravel and plant the Egeria densa on the gravel? On the other hand, is it have enough light source for the Egeria densa creating oxygen if I put it under the normal indoor LED light? I am also wondering should I put some duckweed on the surface or it would consume more oxygen in the water?
I like to add gravel in all my aquariums for number of reasons. It sure helps rooted plants to hold in place. Gravel is great for critters to hide. It adds microelements into water. And it holds together any accumulated over long period of time waste. Different LED bulbs emit light of different lightwaves and power...There are LED bulbs designed for plants (red lightwaves).
Duckweed gets nutrition dissolved in water, and it gets oxygen and CO2 mostly from atmosphere. I add duckweed in all my nurseries ;)

I am so regret to watch your videos this late and didn't have enough time for the Egeria, algae, critters (I haven't seen any seed shrimps yet) stabilized before letting the shrimps lived in. I hope my shrimps can survive in this bottle. Right now, I cannot see any bubbles released by the Egeria. I am not sure if the shrimps get enough oxygen to breathe. I will try to improve the environment as your advice if they can survive in next few days.

Where do you find elodea
Elodea grows in fresh water ponds and rivers. Fast growing intrusive plant banned in many states. Warm time of the year is the best time to look for it in your local ponds and lakes. Or look for it in local or online pet stores. Though, pet stores in NYC do not sell it (it's banned here). I bought Elodea for my aquariums on Ebay.

how do you keep the water from fouling?
My aquariums keep turning unhealthy a few days after being set up.
I feed minimal food only every other day.
I let all new aquarium sit for a couple weeks (some times months) without fish. Only add some snails, scuds and whatever tiny critters you can find. It takes a couple weeks for bacteria to settle. You don't have to feed snails and scuds at that time - they will feed on plants and algae. Weeks later you add fish in perfectly set aquarium and start feeding them small amounts of food. That's all to it.

19 with fish.
I am actually reducing number of aquariums with fish for 3 main reasons: lack of time, they all in my living room, new projects need space ;)

I kept breeding couples (1 female and 2 males) of guppies in 2 liter bottles. My adult guppies were under 3 cm. So, that is what I think you can go rather safely. Also, you may want to build a couple spare aquariums to move newborn fry when it comes to it ;)

I build aquariums for fish based on the fish size. The narrowest side of any aquarium is 3 or more times the fish size. It works very well for fish and...I deem the same should work for most live creatures. Surely, there are doomed to be some exceptions, I can think of couple of such right now. But shrimps seems to be fine ;)

Bacteria grows persistently everywhere. In water, on the land and in air. Bacteria is on my and yours hands and inside our guts. Different types and strains of bacteria are literally everywhere. As to where it originally come from...it is a question about origin of life. Hmm...I will let you know the answer as soon as I could figure it out myself ;)

Look for them at freshwater ponds/lakes during warm season - that is how I get them. Pick some aquatic plants - seed shrimp usually come with those plants ;)

I got it from constructors. They were fixing something in my building. I explained to couple guys what I need it for and asked for handful to try in one aquarium. The give me enough for couple dozen tanks :)) I use and reuse it all over and over again.

Yo uso la segunda caja para hacer paredes dobles.
Cortar la parte inferior y la parte superior de la segunda caja para hacer paredes dobles.
Las paredes dobles son útiles para cultivar algas y para simplificar la limpieza de las paredes.
Coloca las paredes dobles dentro de la primera caja.
Añadir grava o unas rocas.
Hice una base de madera para este acuario.
La base hace que sea más seguro mover el acuario alrededor.
Coloque un fondo inclinado detrás de su acuario.

La mayoría de las mascotas de agua dulce están bien en agua a una temperatura ambiente normal de 70-78 F durante todo el año.
Es la temperatura en mi apartamento, no hay necesidad de un calentador de agua;)

Es mejor comenzar un acuario con peces jóvenes o recién nacidos.
Uso una pipeta para mover peces recién nacidos a este acuario de 10 semanas.
Camarones, caracoles, otras criaturas, bacterias y microorganismos hacen de cualquier acuario un hogar muy bienvenido para los peces recién nacidos.
Los guppies recién nacidos se alimentan de microorganismos y algas.
Doy de comer a todos mis guppies, incluso a las crías recién nacidas, una vez al día con una pizca de hojuelas de comida casera o algas.
¡Reduzca la cantidad de alimentos o salte la próxima alimentación si toma más de 2 o 3 minutos para que los peces coman!
La comida no consumida se pudre en el agua, lo que contribuye a condiciones insalubres.
Dejo crecer algas en las paredes dobladas.
El agua en los acuarios es cristalina!
Las algas, bacterias, microorganismos y plantas son los mejores filtros en nuestro planeta y en los acuarios.
Y son fuente de alimento;)
Muevo acuarios semanalmente para que cada lado aproveche al máximo la luz proveniente de una ventana, nunca exponiendo los acuarios con peces a la luz solar directa.
Cubra los acuarios para reducir la evaporación.

Tiempo para cosechar algas.
Saque las paredes dobles.
Las paredes del acuario están limpias.
El agua es clara, las plantas se ven saludables y los peces están activos.
La observación diaria del comportamiento de los peces y el crecimiento de las plantas son partes agradables del cuidado de los peces.
La observación ayuda a detectar problemas y hacer ajustes oportunos.
Use una tarjeta de plástico para fregar algas de las paredes dobles.
Recoge tantas algas como puedas.
Lave las paredes dobles antes de volver a colocarlas en el acuario.
Alimenta las algas recolectadas a las mascotas en acuarios.
¡Los guppies y muchos otros peces y animales, incluidas las personas, también comen diferentes tipos de algas!
Las algas son una parte fundamental de la pirámide alimenticia.
Cepille las algas de las paredes según sea necesario en acuarios sin paredes dobles.
Este es un acuario de más de 2 años y 1.6 litros.
No cambio el agua en ninguno de mis acuarios.
Mueva las plantas de repuesto a otros acuarios, utilícelas para hacer copos de comida para peces o compártalas con sus viejos y nuevos amigos.
Compartir es demostrar interés.
