The owner of the Santa Paula Airport was a friend of my father and I. We had numerous friends on the airport. If you love old airplanes, Santa Paula is THE PLACE TO GO. I was clued in earlier that I was not to ask for photos or autographs, but he was very kind and would sit and speak with anyone that wanted to visit. The "Yellow" airplane you refer is a Boeing PT-17. He had another extremely rare Pitcarin PA-5 which had won Grand Champion ata very popular West Coast. Steve also had a huge collection of antique métal toys that he was quite proud of. I was at his hangar for about a half hour, and a short visit. Very nice gentleman. He lived life to the fullest. RIP.

So, he also had a fabulous rural property near Hayden, Idaho that was a big Real Estate item about 7 (give or take) years ago.

I’m a refrigeration and HVAC mechanic and I have a few clients that live on tiny airstrips in really nice hangar homes. I’ve always found the homes and the clients to be pretty exceptional individuals . Steve McQueen living in one sounds about right .

Myself and some friends landed in Santa Paula in 1978; were invited to his hangar and visited with Steve. His request was no pics no autographs; he was a real gentleman. The hangar had a Stearman and another plane, probably 40 motorcycles, and a big collection of old gas pumps. His wife Barb was there and we all visited; good memories

So cool! You were so lucky to have met Steve. What exactly did you guys talk about ?
No cars were in his hangers ? I thought he had places to store his car collection. Did he say if he planned to move into his new place when renovated and then to still keep this hanger or future plans ?

@@jasonknight5863 No cars in hangar; he had a red Ferrari parked outside. Maybe 50 Harley’s and a few Indians in the hangar; he mostly wanted to talk about the motorcycles but did mention they were building at a ranch out of town for privacy. Was just like an everyday person you would run into--

@@Pilotc180 wow you had such an amazing story. Do you know which red Ferrari he had. I’ve got one too.
Sounds like he was more a Bike guy having 50 of them inside the hanger. A red Ferrari Parked outside but talked about the bikes instead. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 🤣
Sharon Tate had a Red Ferrari 275 GTB. Did he talk about her at all being her friend.
Just a regular guy nice. Did he mention Political Affiliation at all. I always wondered what he was.
Sounds like he was a cool guy. My mom doesn’t like him at all because of his womanizing bad ass ways he had. But he sounds great. So more laid back then and friendly ?

Jordan, back in the early '90s I used to fly to Santa Paula (SZP) from Hawthorne in my Cessna 150 a couple times. Oddly enough a year or so after I told it, the new buyer had it located in Santa Paula for several years. I remember having to make a "slam dunk" approach into the airport, as there is a 1,500-2,000 foot peak that we had to fly over to get into the pattern. Once over the peak, power to idle, add flaps and steep decent to get down to pattern altitude! Only 2,600 foot runway, so you had to make sure you had a stable approach on final and zone in on the approach speed.
I know how Steve felt living (or just hanging out for hours on end) at the airport, it is the most relaxing thing one can experience as a pilot, other than flying.

I met Steve McQueen shortly before he passed. He was out on the East Coast and visited the Motorcycle Shop where I was working part time in Norfolk, Va.. Yes Yes, beautiful airport location in a beautiful farming community/valley. It was a perfect motorcycle ride in early AM on weekends for me since the 70s. I would stop in at the airport for breakfast at the great cafe to watch the cool vintage aircraft fly around. Nope, I never saw Steve McQ nor knew he hung out there. The locals would never rat on a guy like him anyway. I recall seeing a yellow bi-plane doing touch & go's - little did I know.

In 1978, I took a few flying lessons when I turned 18, and one morning, my flight instructor said, "Hey Bob, let's have coffee with my friend a"Steve!" So I said sounds like a plan. Well, it wasn't until about 2 hours later while on a flying lesson that the instructor asked me if I knew who "Steve" was? I said, ya, that's Steve?? Hahaha 😁 I had absolutely no idea who he actually was! The instructor told me everything, and after we landed, I wanted to talk with Steve again, but unfortunately, he had already left for the day. That was my one and only times meeting Steve McQueen!! After all these years, I remember the moment like it was the other day! Rest in peace, Steve!!

@@tomking1890 I've got a quick story about not knowing who someone was at the time that was famous. In 1972 I was stationed at Dyess AFB outside of Abilene Texas. Me and a couple of other guys used to ride dirt bikes out in the boonies on the weekend when we could find a place. One of the guys said he scouted a place and got permission for us to go out for the weekend as long as we didn't bring guns to shoot because they had cattle out there grazing. We showed up Friday night set up a tent rode a bit and spent Saturday riding. Sunday we got more riding in and were getting ready to pack up our stuff and head back out.
An old red Ford pickup truck drove out to our campsite and I figured it was someone to make sure we picked up our site. It was an old man in coveralls and a straw hat. He asked us where we were from and we started talking. He said you boys want to share a watermelon with me? It's hot today and you might like it. He lowered the tailgate and we ate watermelon and he started to talk about Texas history and was an interesting guy. He said call him T and he owned the ranch. Prior my buddy got permission from the ranch manager thinking it was his place. We wrapped up the visit and he said goodbye and drove off. On the way out we stopped at the ranch house to thank the manager for letting us camp out over the weekend and assured him we didn't leave anything behind. He goes you boys had a visitor? Yes we said. Do you know who he is? He said call him T. The manager said you boys were talking to T Boone Pickens one of the wealthiest men in America! He owns many oil wells in Texas.
We had no idea at all,we thought he was just a rancher/ farmer. The guy laughs and said T enjoyed talking to people who don't know who he is because people don't act normal if they knew who he was. That's my story I hope you liked it!

I grew up in Norwalk it's about 18 miles out of Los Angeles and around 1977 I pulled up next to a fire engine red Harley-Davidson Bagger. I looked up and Steve McQueen was on it. He had shoulder length hair and was heavy set at the time. I was shy and didn't say anything to him and he looked deep in thought. When the light turned green I went straight and he went right. A year ago I figured he was about 80 miles away from his home.

I was lucky enough to spend almost an entire weekend chatting with Neile at a celebrity show. She told me some really juicy gossip about Steve. I told her I loved the movie "The Blob" which Steve had said he despised. But Neile told me the only movie poster that hung in their house was for "The Blob". She also said they had double dated with Suzanne Pleshette and her boyfriend to a drive-in to see "The Blob". Steve went on to have an affair with Pleshette.

At 77 & not too many hero's in my life. Never owned a TV and stopped watching movies about 1980. Steve McQueen was my fave, and Jim Clark was right up there with him.

Barbie lives just down the street from me. She’s a very nice lady. She wrote a book about her life with Steve. It chocked full of all those pictures she took. Funny as I am a medium I have never figured out why when I walk by her house I hear. From Al Jolson song mammy. I’d walk a million miles for one of you smiles. Just that line. I think that he must have loved her smile so much. Someday I will have ask her. But I never push myself on people. No matter what I might pickup. There is a right moment and time for such things.

We lost him too soon. I had finished missile training at Fort Bliss, TX near El Paso across from Juarez, Mexico. I was in Europe when I heard of his death in Juarez. I think he was looking for a cure. Sad he didn't get one. I liked him in Bullet and Great Escape but wouldn't lend him my car or motorcycle. No one but him could have played Papion just like no one but Anthony Quin could play Barabbas.
