hears depressing lyric (the chorus starts playing) "WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE"
😂
Hearing "Oklahoma City bomb" and "pokemon" in the same breath is really something, let me tell you
this guy got us headbopping to the most traumatizing events LMAO
good reaction!
Honestly though isn't that what the point of the song is? The world is a bad place but you just gotta keep fighting.
first person i’ve seen on youtube to say they think its cool they don’t go in order 🤘some people are so stuck up. it’s a cover song, they made it their own way!
I think it is because Billy Joel turned 40 in 1989, which is a bit of a milestone age and he was chatting to some 20-somethings back then who were saying it was an exciting time in history, what with the Cold War coming to an end.
Billy had said he knew the feeling because he remembered what was going on when he was their age but they were a little dismissive, implying that nothing of any real significance was going on back then.
He then as more of a mental exercise, began to list the key events and people from his year of birth in 1949 to him turning 40 in 1989, but he did so in chronological order and it then became the song We Didn't Start the Fire.
It does seem more impressive though to be in date order and to still rhyme too.
Agreed. It was annoying that that was the takeaway for A LOT of people. Ruined their own experience.
Apparently that was on purpose. It kind of fits how random and full on the last 34 years have been.
I like how it’s out of order because it kinda captures the chaos the last few decades were….also I can’t drive playing the song because I headbang way too hard
My weak ass started crying and head banging at the sametime😭😂
Same
I was born in '81 It was interesting to see an updated version. with new events. Fall Out Boy did a great job.
after I listened to the original by Billy Joel I was wondering if he or someone else would make an updated version of the song and I think it would be awesome if every 20-30 years someone would update the song so future generations would have a fun way of learning history through music.
Exactly, music is our time machine 🎉
Billy Joel did say in an interview he has wanted some one to do an updated version of his song for a while now and gave fallout boy his blessing on the cover.
I just love that we have an updated version of such a CLASSIC for Millennials and gen Z. I cried the first time I heard this cover.
Born in 85, shit im 5 days from my 38th b day and this shit equally made me tear up, feel old and was an awesome remake of a fantastic o.g. song.
Now the Gen Ziers and the Millenials have their own version of The anthem of Boomers, and i find that beautiful
@@SovLestlandia technically a lot of us millennials were alive when the original came out haha
The genuis lyric people are sobbing rn
Once you hear it you can never un hear it… but when they say the word “SpongeBob” you can hear the beloved character laughing in the background
1987 right here and grew up with Fall Out Boy as well. Your takeaway was mine: this was my life in song. As someone who feeds off of nostalgia and having a band of my youth sing this song (and also a Billy Joel fan), this song resonated with me hard. To say that I enjoyed it doesn’t say enough.
I'm born 1990 and I completely agree 100% with this entire sentiment. It was almost an out of body experience to listen to this the first time and realize exactly how much crazy shit has happened in my life and it's not even near all of it either. This was absolutely brilliant
Dude same. Sick of Gen Z shitting on it.
Born in 1983 here. Turned 40 this past April. I can’t believe how much us 80’s kids seen and witnessed in last years. I saw another person comment on different channel that someone else in 40 needs to update this song. This is one song that needs to keep growing.
As someone who was born in 1988 (my birthday is a week from tomorrow), I totally relate to your reaction! Some of those memories of those events were traumatic for me, especially with COVID while my dad was going through cancer in 2019-2020. But I rocked out to this anyway when I first heard it, fist in the air, and mouthing the lyrics. My dad LOVED Billy Joel, and Fall Out Boy is my all time favorite band. They really did the song justice, and it ties in with my dad so much since he passed away in 2020. Thank you for posting this! I can't wait to do a karaoke version of this song next Saturday at my karaoke party when I'm 35!
this isn't a bad attempt by fall out boy, the brilliance of the original is that he did it in chronological order so he was limited in the way he could get things to rhyme, not just throw throw them in randomly so they fit
The reason it's random is because our lives these last few years have had no order, no followable story, no rhyme or reason. It's been ten times more chaotic than Joel's time..
@@maddoxioyou completely missed the point of the original song if you think that. The point is there’s always shit happening in history, you can’t just blindly say one period of time was harder just because it’s happening now and you’re living through it
I kinda like that it's not in order because it matches the nature of the Internet. One thing leading to another in these randomly related ways to recap these decades of chaos.
Lyrics of the first version england gets a new queen.
This version the queen died. Coincidence? When did the wall fall?
The german wall? 89
I cried when Cobain died. I was in just starting high school. His poems (songs) were like my own personnal feelings. When i think about the frality of childhood and just childhood in general. Cobain stage dives thru my memories.
Theres one glaring omission from this song. Covid...
I would have loved if they kept the "trouble in the suez" line the same because we would have ALL known what that was referencing XD I'm at least glad the line is in the same place. It's interesting they didn't mention Covid at all. But I love the fact it's not in order. In todays age, we gets news on a second to second basis, and it's so hard to keep up sometimes. It's confusing and overwhelming and this encapsulates it perfectly.
the last 34 years have definitely been random and full on, it fits perfectly. Apparently they didn't mention COVID as that was worldwide and will never be forgotten whereas they wanted to include some things that might otherwise drift into forgotten space, they sort of had a small reference in "Tiger King" as that was the show everyone watched haha
And now think of our (grand-)parents who've been alive for both parts.
We all saw the second plane. Before we wondered if it was a accident. Only to see that it was intentional.
Most normal breathing people know planes don't just crash into buildings
@@Yoursistersazz the first plane could've been a horrible accident. The second one proved it wasnt.
Much the rest of their songs, Patrick Stamp's voice always tells a story so this feels very organic, and you can hear every emphasis on each historical moment.
Perhaps the idea behind the FOB’s version was for the order of events to mirror how a persons typical social media feed looks like. Almost no videos are in chronological order. Ya know?
Yes, and I want the next generation to do next one
They forgot harmabe
Haha good point!
Where's Covid-19? Not one line in that song was dedicated for it.
Also, funny how the suez canal has had been mentioned in each version
True, but for two very different reasons.
And the queen
From being coronated to dying
Y2K was a potentially really bad economic disaster that was first really noticed around 1993 when airlines were making purchase contracts for new aircraft and the date problem made the interest rates ridiculous. It was never going to make microwaves go nuts, but international banking and commerce was potentially terrible. This disaster was averted by a herculean effort by the international IT community over the last half of the 1990s.
Please put respect to the people who fixed this because these corporations were so cheap they were still using 30-year-old programs instead of modernizing regularly.
RESPECT!
thank you again for doing it , always ready to make you headbang !
more than a cover....this is an update
The signs also reminds me of Bob Dylan's "Subterrean Homesick Blues"
80 years!?
It took the Cubs over 100 years to make it back
108, to be exact.
I never thought thought I would be dancing when he said more war in Afghanistan
Haha I love your reaction to this
Can I get a desk pop for this song?! It absolutely slaps.I was driving in my car the other day when I first heard it, I had the same reaction as you. I almost had to pull over!
I've been so obsessed with this song that I went looking for reactions to it. Definitely shared similar feelings to yours!
87 here too and this song defines our generation. This is OUR SONG.
Edit: I did end up subbing because of your reaction. Go listen to Not Afraid by FoB. It's a remake for that new Ghostbusters film that too many people slept on. 😩
Also, Love From The Other Side is a banger too.
How many items in the song did "Back to the Future" get right?🤔
It was 108 years for the cubs
Did you ever check out "We didn't start the fire" Marvel version?
1985 baby joining in on this as well. Same bro.
And the assassination of Shinzo Abe happened like just last year. So, that’s recent recent.
So was Texas's failed electric grid
It's not a cover. It's a continuation from 1989/1990 to 2023
The original didn't just feature fun pop culture references. It also featured traumatic events too. Which is why I liked that the updated version didn't shy away from the more devastating events that happened in these times. The whole song was meant as a 'history lesson' of sorts. Billy Joel wrote it with events from the year he was born '49 to '89. If I recall correctly he ran into some younger kid (I think John Lennon's son) who said something about a life he's lived through (Can't remember the exact quote) and Billy thought about all the events that happened during his life time. I'm assuming this convo happened in '89 because the original stops in '89. But the point was not to necessarily be a happy pop song even though the music reflects that. But to point out how young this kid was in comparison and how there's still more he could go through. The only thing I don't particularly like about the update is there's no sense of order. Billy Joel rhymed yes but he also managed to make most of the references in chronological order. There were a few exceptions that weren't necessarily in order. But for the most part they were in order. And I don't mind putting The Queen's death and Prince's in the lyrics but it seems weird to put them together. Since Prince died in 2016. Though I suppose putting him first then Her works for some sense of order. But yes it just feels too random at times.
Update to my comment: Nevermind some do appear kind of in order like the original but not quite as in order as the original and Meghan Markle was after Bobbit so that was in fact correct and my adhd brain was thinking it was 'wrong'. But a lot of it still seems random. So I deleted the last bit of my comment. Anyways I am getting used to it.
shocks me that they never included covid
The only thing the song forgot was "2012 the end of the world and covid"
I'm surprised Kobe and Covid-19 didn't get a mention
I dont understand why Hurricane Katrina was never mentioned
See Climate Change.
Yes I know everything isn’t in order but they had to do it like this to make it rhyme the reason why billy joles worked because it was just dumb luck that everything fell in order
y2k was a thing but we spent billions preventing it.. it was a huge success.
Did they miss Katrina?
They couldn't get everything. But did they get kobe
It could have been better if the events were in chronological order like the original.
"we didn't start the fire" is about the Cold War
We Didn't Start The Fire is about Billy Joel's 40-year span of current events between 1949 to 1989.
@@desimonium Which is the Cold War. All of the events listed on the song involve the Cold War in some way.
@@paznerkiller Not exactly. Because you had events that featured the Civil Rights movement (Malcolm X), major sporting events (Brooklyn's got a winning team, Liston beats Patterson), US, UK, and international politics (JFK, British politician sex, Belgians in the Congo), health and environmental catastrophes (Children of Thalidomide, hypodermics on the shore, AIDS, Crack, etc.) and entertainment icons (Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Beatles, etc.)
@@paznerkiller When asked if he deliberately intended to chronicle the Cold War with his song he responded: "It was just my luck that the Soviet Union decided to close down shop soon after putting out the song", and that this span "had a symmetry to it, it was 40 years" that he had lived through. That was from a 1994 live Q&A at Oxford University.
hated it.
try to pause on every syllable next time.
that is a terrible cover/reimagining. They didn't even put the events in order. They didn't mess with the composition hardly at all, just translated it from piano to guitar which most guitarists can do on the fly by ear... It's like they took this hugely iconic song and were like, "we'll spend a few hours on it".
Ah, I was on board with this reaction until the RIP George Floyd BS.
Nothing MORE annoying than a dude stopping it every 5 seconds for his own takes,, Drink your cheap energy drink, then Wait till the end then give your takes. Bad Look Dude
iht.. its the worst remake.....
nothing makes sense & the
events are not in order, its a
big mess😂😅😅😂
NO..!! THIS SONG IS NOT GOOD !!!!! my opinion....
"Its not in order like the original" -🤓🤓🤓
