I worked at a wild bird rehab center so I saw dozens and dozens of birds daily & the personalities are wild. I guess with dogs it's similar with different breeds having certain traits, Robins were definitely the sweetest birds imo, but even within species they're unique. I had 4 Blue jays I helped raise from little babies & they were SO goofy in their own different ways I loved them so much!
Hi Colleen! I work for farm sanctuary near LA. (side note you should visit! I think your sister just visited us!) I work with all types of animals: chickens, emus, goats, cows, horses, and pigs. And LET ME TELL YOU from the smallest bird to a 3,000 pound cow, their personalities are all so distinct and unique! It is so magical to get to learn each animals quirks! Thank you for taking such great care of your chickens, it is so refreshing to watch you care for them and love them like the little babies they are!
I lived on a small farm for a while in my mid 20’s, I had always loved animals, but looking after them that closely and getting to know their likes and dislikes gave me an entire new outlook. My daughter had twin boys March 4. Her daughter turned 1 March 18th!! So she has her hands so full. You were her guru through her difficult twin pregnancy and then c section. She’s rewatched all your videos from that experience. Thank you for sharing your stories… it really does help other moms going through the same thing. TTQ: Hi Colleen, I have dermatillomania as well. It helps a lot when you talk about it, so please keep going and don't feel like you're annoying, because you're not! I wanted to ask, do you get blood stains on your bed sheets from the wounds you create as well? If so; how does Erik react to this? How do you handle this? I literally don't have any bed sheets without blood stains anymore (and no, none of them are period-related), and whilst I don't have a partner I do get embarassed when a friend comes over and they might see it. I have the same problem! I figured out that I have to get dark linens because the blood stains are less obvious. My partner used to think is was upsetting, never disgusting though. Now, it’s just a part of life. ❤️
I don’t have this sort of experience, but, I’ve known ppl who get nose bleeds thru the night and I’ve been a housekeeper.. it helps more times than not, to use hydrogen peroxide on more fresh blood stains. But, for something on a more consistent basis I would recommend darker sheets or patterned ones 😊
I have dermatillomania as well and blood stains are a nightmare for me. Bed sheets, pillow cases, shirts, undershirts… Every time I get something new (e.g. clothes) I try so hard not so scratch/pick but eventually everything gets stained.
I have a similar problem and because of it I tend to buy black or dark color sheets, so its harder to see. I also use a waterproof mattress protector under the sheets incase I ever bleed threw. Never an easy things to deal with but don’t ever feel ashamed💗 best of luck.
Depending on the color of the bed sheets, you can google how to get blood stains out of white or colored fabrics with regular household products and they legit work. And if you get dark bed sheets, then the blood stains don’t really show. I too struggle with dermatillomania, so I totally get it! 💗

I really love it when you talk about "negative" things like how you never thought you could do things you've accomplished because I just turned 18 and I feel like I will never get to my goals but you give me hope and make me have less anxiety because now you have accomplished things and you still have struggles but you do your best everyday and thats so impressive its so hard sometimes. I had chickens for over 10yrs you are totally right that you can tell the difference in their personalities & markings after getting to know them. They are such loving & intelligent birds people don’t realise until they actually care for them how much that’s the case.

My favorite thing about watching these vlogs is when the babies laugh hysterically and I go into a full on hyena cackle and then I catch myself and I basically am like oh well and I keep doing it cause it makes me so happy
SAMEEE Sometimes I listen while cooking and doing chores not so much watch. And ANYTIME one of the babies starts losing it I can't help but smile or laugh. It is SO contagious
One of the biggest shocks to me when I started looking in to getting Tarantulas was how each one had a different personality. I had over 30 Tarantulas at one point and EVERY SINGLE ONE was different. Love you're seeing that w/ your chicks 🥰🥰
Some birds are just lovely and like to be held and interact with you, some are mean, some couldn't care less about you lol. Every one is indeed different. Applesauce is a treasure. She's going to be your first sweet one forever 💕

Hey Colleen. You will be able to know if they are roosters before they start laying eggs if they are hens. Roosters have different feathers compared to hens. The feathers of their tail and on their neck are completely different from females and you can notice them pretty early on. Their combs will start showing sooner if they are roosters and they will grow much bigger than hens. Does are all early signs of a rooster before they start going cockadoodledoo so if some of them are roosters, you can plan ahead🐓❤
4:11 totally agree with you, unfortunately many pet store employees aren’t properly educated on the animals need and usually give out incorrect and dangerous advice and products…a lot of things sold in pet stores aren’t appropriate for animals such as salt licks, mineral blocks, sawdust/wood shavings, cotton/fluffy bedding, scented bedding, some types of food, small cages, incorrect sand for hamsters and small animals as well as rawhide, bones, food etc for dogs, cats…the list goes on and on unfortunately and they do this for profit.
We had 2 hens and no roosters in the area around us. But we always heard a similar sound to a rooster. Turns out the leader of a group of hens will start acting like a rooster, like making that sound. We were so confused when our vet had told us that information

I find it super interesting and adorable that Applesauce is OBSESSED with Colleen. We had puppies a while ago, and the smallest of the litter was OBSESSED with my mom. And I find it so cool that the smallest chicken Applesauce felt safe with Colleen just like our puppy was with my mom. Maybe Applesauce senses your a mama? Hey Colleen you will be able to tell rooster from hens between 6 to 8 months. Hens will start laying eggs between 6 to 8 months. Once the chicks reach six months you will have to pay close attention to them to see who starts nesting and laying eggs. I volunteer at a farm and have worked with chickens also have read books about them as well.
Colleen! I highly recommend following The Gentle Barn, they really taught me and gave me an appreciation for the personalities non-traditional pets have. They’re also an amazing organization and deserve all the love they can get
I’m so relieved that you are making sure your kids learn how to swim. Here in Australia kids learn to swim in school. It’s rare that someone doesn’t. Water is so dangerous if you don’t know how to swim and how to stay safe, I genuinely believe every person who has the physical capability to get into a large body of water should learn. We have a show called Bondi Rescue that basically covers what the life guards do and them saving people at Bondi beach and it’s terrifying how many people come to Australia from overseas for a holiday and go right into the ocean with little to know experience swimming. The water is a wonderful place, but without the right skills and knowledge it’s so dangerous, so thank you for making sure your babies learn how to swim
I love how you explain these chicks have individuality. I also had pet chicks and duckling growing up. They are so fun and funny at times. My mom used to say our 1 duck probably thought it was a chick as well. Lol it was the cutest. ❤

When you were talking about purchasing the chicks all I could think about was when I worked at tractor supply and it was chick season. I can tell you that pretty much every other customer that walked in be like oh my God they're so cute I'll buy some when it came to the chicks or the ducks. And whether it's controversial or not I would go through the list of why you should not own a chicken because you're not ready to own a chicken or duck. I would start off with yes they're cute and then I would go into the but.. after I would start listing the reasons of do you have means to take care of them do you legally have what it takes to care for them 95% of the people would walk away and be like okay you're right they're cute now but there are commitment. I used to get in trouble for doing this because obviously it's a business they want to push selling. But they're living creatures and just because they're cute when they're babies doesn't mean they're not a whole commitment you need money you need space you need time and people would just see the little ones and be like oh that's easy. it was so angry because the company would sell quantities of like two do people who didn't have the space or time. I would also include the pricing in my sales pitch of you need this amount of money each month to care for them. I'm fully aware it's controversial but I feel like in the long run I saved many chickens and ducks their lives. I know in-store we personally cleaned the cages every hour and that was not enough. We fed them every 30 minutes and that was not enough. I'm also not going to say anything about the quality of them are arriving to us. But we would have to soak all of them in warm water to clean them (butts) . I feel like too many people will view them as just chickens and not pets. Which is sad. But to be fair don't get me started on the meat chickens, those were the enemy!
Thank you SO much for doing this, you basically were advocating for the chicks and no one else would. I would always see the chicks at tractor supply and know that tons of people would buy them and then care for them poorly. Living things should always have someone like you to stick up for them ❤

I find it super interesting and adorable that Applesauce is OBSESSED with Colleen. We had puppies a while ago, and the smallest of the litter was OBSESSED with my mom. And I find it so cool that the smallest chicken Applesauce felt safe with Colleen just like our puppy was with my mom. Maybe Applesauce senses your a mama? I don’t know but I thought that was super cute!!

Colleen! When you chop your hair you should look into donating it! There are different orgs. Some sell the hair but I think some don’t. You hair is very beautiful and healthy and it makes you feel so good afterwards 😊

Hey Colleen you will be able to tell rooster from hens between 6 to 8 months. Hens will start laying eggs between 6 to 8 months. Once the chicks reach six months you will have to pay close attention to them to see who starts nesting and laying eggs. I volunteer at a farm and have worked with chickens also have read books about them as well.

I’m so relieved that you are making sure your kids learn how to swim. Here in Australia kids learn to swim in school. It’s rare that someone doesn’t. Water is so dangerous if you don’t know how to swim and how to stay safe, I genuinely believe every person who has the physical capability to get into a large body of water should learn. We have a show called Bondi Rescue that basically covers what the life guards do and them saving people at Bondi beach and it’s terrifying how many people come to Australia from overseas for a holiday and go right into the ocean with little to know experience swimming. The water is a wonderful place, but without the right skills and knowledge it’s so dangerous, so thank you for making sure your babies learn how to swim

When you were talking about purchasing the chicks all I could think about was when I worked at tractor supply and it was chick season. I can tell you that pretty much every other customer that walked in be like oh my God they're so cute I'll buy some when it came to the chicks or the ducks. And whether it's controversial or not I would go through the list of why you should not own a chicken because you're not ready to own a chicken or duck. I would start off with yes they're cute and then I would go into the but.. after I would start listing the reasons of do you have means to take care of them do you legally have what it takes to care for them 95% of the people would walk away and be like okay you're right they're cute now but there are commitment. I used to get in trouble for doing this because obviously it's a business they want to push selling. But they're living creatures and just because they're cute when they're babies doesn't mean they're not a whole commitment you need money you need space you need time and people would just see the little ones and be like oh that's easy. it was so angry because the company would sell quantities of like two do people who didn't have the space or time. I would also include the pricing in my sales pitch of you need this amount of money each month to care for them. I'm fully aware it's controversial but I feel like in the long run I saved many chickens and ducks their lives. I know in-store we personally cleaned the cages every hour and that was not enough. We fed them every 30 minutes and that was not enough. I'm also not going to say anything about the quality of them are arriving to us. But we would have to soak all of them in warm water to clean them (butts) . I feel like too many people will view them as just chickens and not pets. Which is sad. But to be fair don't get me started on the meat chickens, those were the enemy!
Thank you SO much for doing this, you basically were advocating for the chicks and no one else would. I would always see the chicks at tractor supply and know that tons of people would buy them and then care for them poorly. Living things should always have someone like you to stick up for them ❤

We used to have an Americauna (bearded Easter Egger) and she would walk up to the other ladies chin up waiting for them to clean her beard for her, it was the cutest thing ever!
