I’ve been playing for 52 years, mostly self taught until I started watching online videos this past year. I’ve learned a lot and easier ways to play the fretboard. I watch a lot of beginner videos and see things I’ve missed over the years. Thank you!
going a bit fast. If I might suggest slowing down a bit with the finger stuff. So those of us older guys can grab it easier. But other than that and having to watch t several times for the finger positions, great lesson!
I've been playing acoustic for 40 years and I have always stayed away from soloing up the neck because I thought I would never understand it. I made it a goal this year to open up my mind and see If I can learn it. This video has kicked a door open that is long overdue. I have 4 original albums worth of cowboy chord songs and I'm finally excited again about playing guitar. I have always loved Clapton's melodic soloing and I think I'm gonna make a run at it. I could hear my solos in my head but really never learned how to navigate it. Thanks Dude. Keep up the good work.
I want to learn from you so bad but every time I watch one of your videos, you’re way over my head as a beginner. Maybe some of this will make sense in a few years. 😢
@@thedeathcake I’m a self taught rhythm guitar player that is still fairly new. I can play a half dozen chord shapes reliably but haven’t been able to find a lesson on pentatonic scales that makes sense to me. I don’t have a music background so when I hear people jumping around and talking about this note or that note, I gloss over because I don’t understand the basics. I’d really love to learn to play some lead guitar one day or pick up a guitar with someone else playing rhythm and be able to adlib into it and jam together. This video goes over a lot of things quickly that I just don’t have the basic knowledge of.
@@JasonLestage I was where you are not long ago. Any question I had I’d look it up and eventually it clicked. Everything seems built of the major scale. It’s like an ancestor tree imo.
That has been happening to me for years. I always return to videos I didn't understand months ago and then the information clicks into place as I learn more. Just keep practicing more basic things and watching other videos and they will start falling into place.
Hey hey hey! What's up with dissing singers on music ignorance... This one loyally watches Sean Daniel videos, just to increase knowledge on precisely this topic. Now, if you wanna talk drummers.... 😂
Sean, the only reason that I clicked on this video was to leave a note that these clickbait titles, "A Simple Guitar Trick You'll Never Forget" are super unhelpful. Maybe you get more views on these types of titles, but they don't work for me and many of your other subscribers, I'm guessing. ...Just a little constructive criticism because you're a long-time favorite of mine.
Thanks for the feedback. Trust me, I wish it was different but there's 0% chance youtube would show people my videos if they were specifically titled what they are.
Hey Sean - this was a pretty great lesson...I find symmetric or at least somewhat repeating patterns like that a lot easier to process as a long time beginner. From the standpoint of using these in a musical context, how would you recommend practicing them ? (i.e. stick with one key and work on specific chord progressions at various portions of the fretboard or go thru the maj/min chords & patterns within each key sequentially ?)
Damn it, Sean! I've been putting these pieces together for the past six or seven years of my life. Knowing the theory, but fleshing out how to best express these ideas to people. You always seem to beat me to the punch at just the right time, and I love you for it brother.
I am not a beginner at the guitar, but I always try watch beginning guitars videos by musicians that I respect, to see if there is something I may have missed, or another way of looking at a subject that I am familiar with. Thanks for the lesson.
I am struggling towards intermediate. Your comment is bang on the head. If you think you know everything, you know not much. If you mock the beginner, you are really just a jerk.
You had me until the 9 minute mark. Then, my head exploded. Valuable lesson. Your enthusiasm, as always, is infectious. Please consider playing your initial examples slowly, so I don’t have rewind ten times. Thanks!
The great thing about UA-cam is that we have the options to slow it down, and rewind as much as we need to, till we get it. Then, we can aim to play it as fast as Sean., when we’re ready 😆
Great lesson again Sean thank you. I think you should have said clearly at the beginning that this was the key of C. This was essential for understanding the lesson It took me forever to work that out and once I had reaped the benefits multifold.
Please mention that your lessons are for experts only. I dont know what is quicker , your fingers or your tongue. No doubt you play and know a lot, but in my opinion quite advanced. Thank you.
Uh ya no...still way over my head. I guess I'm more like Dave Grohl. Couldn't tell you a note on paper if my life depended on it. Should have been learning this stuff with paid lessons as a kid then maybe it would have stuck with me. Pentatonic what?? Is there vodka in it? At 58, I'm going to have to stick to my strumming and limited picking and call it good. Old dog, new tricks sort of thing. But I do like dreaming that someday I could play like that.
Have to agree with the comments about singers. My wife is a singer with the unique gift of being what I call "Key Fluent", doesn't matter what key we play she starts singing in that key (she's amazing, also, btw). I, too, do vocals, but I am aware of my key limitations. Fortunately, by also playing rhythm guitar I am able to transpose to a key that keeps people from throwing fruit at me. And, BTW, she does help with setting up and tearing down.
My choir director (CD) commented once that just get the singers they may not know the theory. With our core choir, they all know the theory and I am trying to catchup. My range? Top end is 1st string open E or F, but the CD pushes me to G before falsetto. Lower end is about G or A 6th string frets 3 and 5. I am enjoying learning the different keys of the songs we sing and learning the fret board by playing the tenor notes. I use a 1963 Mel Bay Bass Method - 1 book for reference to the 3, 4, 5, 6 string notes mapped to the bass clef excluding the transpose assumption. Sliding rules guitar is helpful as well.
Dang SEAN! This TOTALLY blew up my brain too! Yeah, it must just be something about how some of our minds conceptualize shapes in the fretboard. I’ve had the minor pentatonic under my belt for a long time, but had been thinking of it mainly in the scope of soloing. It was never really “connected” into my chord or rhythm work. Simply by re-framing the shape of it - POW! It slips right into rhythm/strumming/chord playing and becomes a completely fluid extension that is now always right there and available. It’s AMAZING the way there can occasionally be major changes in how we see something we’ve already been looking at for ages. I’m shaking my head at MYSELF for not seeing this one before. But hey… better late than never, right?! 100 extra thanks for this one! The first 100 were for the introduction to that lovely new Gretsch you got and demoed just recently. 🤘🤓🤘
The NFC East was wild this year. If the Commanders head coach didn’t have a brain fart by starting Wentz again they may have all made the playoffs. Singers doesnt know what they are doing is 90 percent right. Because they don´t see their voice as an instrument like a piano or guitar where you can play your notes. Its often that singers just work with their emotions and try out which song they can sing. But when they dive into musictheorie they quickly discover that they could sing every song when transcribing it into their favourite key.
Thank you that was super helpful I know these scales fairly well but I didn't always know where to start annoying just to start on the root note makes perfect sense I kind of feel dumb not knowing that but thank you
