I've been sharing this lesson ever since I first learned it in 1972 at sea on a USN Destroyer in the middle of the Atlantic. The cocky, smug, dud of a human being who shared it with me wanted desperately to be one 10th as cool as you, He couldn't pull it off. You are a master teacher and solid guitar player but a natural entertainer; one who has learned the "Secret" of being a great teacher. You have to hold their attention all the way to the end of the lessons. Fabulous video Sean! After teaching piano/guitar privately since 1992, I think you're the best!
The polite injection of humor actually makes it much more memorable. Thanks Sean much appreciated. I keep looking for you in more of Dovydas Street videos too.
So nice to see someone in this world of crap being upbeat and always happy. Your attitude and personality is contagious and needed. Thanks!!!! BTW, your lessons are really easy to understand making them easy to remember as well, even with limited music theory although some theory is required.
I really appreciate your videos. Thank you. The guitar in standard tuning, begs to be played in E. The open E strings and open B are a great little power chord. No "expression" notes. No third to be sad with. No seventh etc. There in the middle, all nestled together, are three more strings on which any number of tri tones can be played up and down the neck for a huge variety of voicings. I invite you to try this one: Index on A at 11, middle on D at 12, ring on G at 13. Nice little E7 stair step shape. Here's some magic: Move this down a half step and there's an A chord. Move it up a half step from the original position and it's a B chord. More:: Move this same shape down so it's centered on the 6th fret (index on 5th) and you can do the same little routine and walk through a I-IV-V progression still in E. More: of course it works up around the 17th fret. Wait! There's more: if you drop the two third notes of the original shape down a half step the shape changes to a very popular three note power shape that in this position with all strings singing, is an Emin7. Move this shape up a half step and now it's Emaj7. Magic.
I picked up a guitar 🎸 for the first time two years ago and have been using your videos to go from being an absolute beginner to advanced beginner thanks to you . I practice everyday and get lots of enjoyment from my acoustic six string guitar. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge while having fun doing it
Back in 1982 , sitting at home on Christmas morning 2AM after my first son was born. I sat down w/ my new Yamaha acoustic and accidentally discovered that E,B,A thing you were playing. I made it into a little thing I play to remember that day, and my son. At the time I couldn't play much else. I was amazed to see you do it too !
I have been using the E shape chord and sliding it up and down the neck for a few years now. I lack the theory so never new the names but always thought they sounded beautiful but never saw anyone using these shapes. Thanks Shawn you’ve filled in some holes in my knowledge.
I learned the bar chords early on and never had much problem playing the B chord. On the other hand, I've always found the classic B7 chord very hard, and mostly don't use it. Now that will change, as I didn't realize you could play it with using your pinky!! Glad to learn this. Thanks Sean.
Thanks man for including notes, intervals, and scale degrees in your lessons. You have really helped me learn how to play and make music more than anyone else has!
I think it's good to play chords all the ways they can be played. It adds character and different voicing to what it is you are playing. For one part of the song you can play a chord one way and then another way for another part of the song. It keeps your playing from sounding too repetitive. Thanks for sharing this. I got my start playing guitar in the key of E 25 years ago, so I already know much of what you show in the video, but it took me years and years of experimenting to figure it out because there was no YT back then. And yeah, that dreaded B chord is a summamabeach that I STILL can't get right after all these years!
I'm sort of an intermediate guitarist, but because I learnt from the" guitar magazine" era. I missed some basic theory . I learnt some basic theory today, thanks 😊
Sweet ! Great Instruction. The key of E does have alot good vibes to it. Everyone wants to stay away from B, but you can't. You need it mon. Really mon. (man).
This stuff is pure gold! Thanks so much for all your amazing videos - I stumbled on one a few weeks ago and am now lapping them all up. You have superb delivery and a great teaching style, it's like having lessons with a good friend! Keep it up Sean, you are making the mystery of good guitar playing disappear, one lesson at a time! I salute you sir, thank you!
You’ve just helped me out big time. I’ve been playing those chord shapes for a while - just noodling! Now however I feel I have the “guild” secret knowledge to maybe play these with confidence in a song! So thankyou “Handsome Gentleman” 👍🏼🤣😬
Oh, it's a blues lesson. First time I truly understood the essential format of the blues. And I can already write rock progressions in Lydian, so this is a milestone for me. So thank you for the blues lesson. Gratitude to infinity and beyond.😎 Ha now I'm going to be bluesing it up lol
yes,,when frank zappa asks (tongue in cheekedly) "does humour belong in music" ? sean,,, you have answered this emphatically, your guitar tuition is a pleasure to experience,, thankyou 😊👍
Hi Sean, You are really helping me a lot. Those beautiful off sounding chords that I have always loved, you run into them often showing how to play barr chords easier. Added with your great humor, is such a wonderful way to teach. Thank's from George
Exellent lesson.....U shift easily and understandably between Theory and just playin ...and!, contextualizing it in simple, relatable language, for us untrained aspirants who play by ear to understand and assimilate!....THX!!🙏
Great lesson A+ You where run over by the E Train @ 10:11 and then came back at 18:30ish to completely derail the E train with all blues passengers onboard(?)!. Thanks for imparting you wisdom an expertise. PS I'm watching Hallmark with the wife. Good luck in your douchie quest.
Sean, some time ago, I heard you (offhandedly) mention how people are impressed when you play further down the fret board. Been trying to figure out how to do that for years. I would call this a Master Class. Thanks for laying it out so nicely...
With Drop D, the E shape up the neck is great, you can fret the 6th string by using your thumb, doubling the 4th string, for a more satisfying sound (to me). You can also do a similar thing in D by doing 3 note chords on top strings, while including all 3 open bottom strings. I switched to drop D on my acoustic this last year after 25 years of playing, and I'm not going back. Bar chords are easier and more enjoyable (you can even play 1-4-5 bar chords w/o even moving your index finger barre position--very nice). 6 string D-shape bar chords become possible. You can throw in transitional 3 string power chords anytime you want. Love shapes with ringing open strings though, makes everything so interesting even though I usually don't know what I'm playing. lol
Hey Sean… since one of main reasons some of us first picked up a guitar was to impress girls, you should do a video to teach us how you get the most beautiful girls in town to play and hang with you!
The B chord is easy. Just cheat a little and barre the whole 4th fret but don't strum the high e. The 5 chord being substituted with the 7 is something new for sure, thanks!
Holy cow! I have been learning the “Across the Universe “ intro and the F#m barre chord is a pain in the butt. Your fingering of F#m will solve this issue. EUREKA! Thank you 🙏
Great video! A really lovely example of those chord voicings being used is 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' by Fairport Convention, as beautiful a song as you'll ever hear imo
Great remiminders. Your triad trick, with E AAdd9 and B, I do the same, but I use my index finger playing the 1 string, leaving 5 and 6 open. It is just as pretty, but it has a nice following bass addition.
So there I was, listening to (but not watching) another video at half speed when this come on auto-play afterward. I thought "man, did Sean have a stroke? That sounds like him!" Turned around and there you were, slurring through the intro. :D Great video and information as always. I highly recommend watching this intro at 50% speed. Just because. ;) Peace, love and a happy New Year to you. Thank you for all you do!
Sean, you have a great talent at explaining what should be obvious but isn’t. I am totally stunned sitting here on Christmas Day drinking Irish Whiskey wondering why after all these years I hadn’t realised that transposable E and Em shape. I’ve been doing it without realising what I was doing. Mind blown. Merry Christmas. 🥳🥳🥳👍

Bsus4 is that chord you are sliding up to get, with an E bass and can be played at the nut also, instead of laying your pinky, play a barre chord using the 1st, ring and pinky placed on the B (2rd fret on A string), G flat (also called F#) (4th on D string), B (4th on G string) and leave the b and high E open, mute the low E or leave it open, if you want the sound you get from sliding the E chord fingering up to the 9th fret
That 000-15 is a wonderful guitar (yes, I have one). Well made, sounds great, looks great - even smells great (yup!). And not unaffordable, especially for someone who wants to move up from an entry level guitar, but doesn't want to spend a lot for a more elite instrument.

Sean... I have been learning so much !!! Thanks !!!
Sean, I think E is the "people's key" because you're right, it's so easy to navigate around the neck in terms of chords and soloing
I still stand by G being the People's Key, but it's a contender
Beauty...good humor with your teaching
Thanks so much!
