- Originally released on July 6, 2016. Guest host: Theo Von. In Drew's absence, Theo Von is sitting in for him. Adam tells the detailed story behind his departure from Loveline including how Dr. Drew was being offered roughly three times the salary that Adam was offered. Even though Adam asked Drew to meet for lunch to discuss their strategy for getting a "favoured nation" contract, he signed his contract without ever telling Adam. And while Adam says that he forgave Drew after he found out from the agent that he eventually fired, you can tell from the sound of his voice that he still resents Drew to this day. It's an interesting story that hasn't been told very often by Adam.

I’d love to hear Drew’s side of this.
Drew was afraid they'd fire him too, and has some kind of pathological fear of going broke and being ruined. A fact that Adam noticed and mocked him for while they were still on Loveline together.
I think that's a Jewish thing which explains why they work so hard
Because he has no actual talents or capability of doing anything on his own so he needs his security blankie
Dr. Drew is a legit MD, had/(maybe still)has a private practice, specialized in addiction medicine, and later became a Psychiatrist with very valuable knowledge and skills sets. There was never a possibility of Dr. Drew going broke even without a radio and TV career, other than by some freak accident like a serious head injury.

@@andreas.9175 He's still a practicing physician and addiction medicine specialist but he's never been a psychiatrist and even if he got a serious head injury I expect his insurance would cover his medical bills
I listened to Loveline once when Adam was running late and it was just Drew by himself for about half an hour. It was pretty boring. I didn't agree with everything Adam said, but I didn't agree with everything Drew said either. Together they made for great radio. Telling Adam to take a pay CUT after years of service meant "We want you to leave." Which he did.
Adam doesn't get enough credit for his role on Loveline and it's a damn shame.

Drew had been at the show since its inception, so they probably felt that they should reward his commitment and loyalty. Whereas Adam is a comedian and could always be replaced by another comedian. Obviously it didn't work out
^Exactly, which is why when Drew wasn't there, they filled in with Dr. Bruce or Dr. Marcel but Adam was irreplaceable
I love how Adam is more concerned with the principle then the money. He wanted the exact difference between his and Drews contract when he could have easily had them round it up. Pretty much sending a message to the bosses that he just wants what he should have been paid.

I remember that show from the 90’s. It was a head of its time for sure.
Whomever is right or wrong .... Loveline went on life support immediately when Adam left.
It was a bad decision by the Radio Corporate interests & it was a bad decision by Dr. Drew too.
I have to respectfully disagree. I came across the show in 2013 and it ended in 2016 (11 years after Adam left). Life support implies that it should have ended shortly after he left. Not at all the case.
@@UnofficialLovelineMoments Loveline was on TV when Adam was on. In the later years, they had to cut down on co-hosts cause they didn't have the money for it. Loveline lost its cultural relevance long before it got cancelled. That's what life support means.
Curious why they would even offer him less. Not normally something done unless you want them gone. More to the story I think.
I was a big fan of Loveline from 98-2003. I hate old man Carolla.
Damn. Adam _never_ shit-talks Jimmy even a little bit. Even when he's going on a rant specifically about late night hosts, he will make sure to leave Kimmel out of it. Never understood why until I heard him tell Ben Shapiro about how he managed to break into the business.
Kimmel gave him one piece of practical advice... which is like precious gold in show business. They _love_ giving academic advice to people, with no practical application. But _none_ of them want to share usable info like "Go to this place and talk to this person and tell them this." Kimmel bought Adam's life-long loyalty by giving him one nugget of _real_ advice. "Create a distinctive and funny character and call into the show _as_ that character." That's it. He just... pointed out a back door for him. But in Hollywood, that level of actual usable help apparently makes them blood-brothers forever, no matter how much they fundamentally disagree about things now.
Loveline doesn't exist without Dr. Drew. You can't have Loveline with Adam and some other random doctor.

Sounds like corporate wanted Adam to leave. Lowball offer gets people to voluntarily spilt without having to pay for another 3 year deal
Drew is an embarrassment of a man. It's crazy people don't see him for what he really is.
I think it's pretty obvious what happened here. As soon as Drew was given his contract, he signed it because he knows he would never leave Loveline, he knows they know it, and probably never gave it another thought. He considered it a public service, talking to callers during commercial breaks and even doing long stints without getting paid at all.
The agents lowballed Adam because they knew they had all the power in the negotiations once Drew signed, and when Adam brought it up to him, I'm sure it worried Drew but I'm guessing he was hoping it'd work itself out.
I think that tracks with Drew's slightly naïve personality. I'm glad Adam forgave Drew but I don't blame him for being upset. Drew should have had more sense than to sign the contract so soon.

Loveline got bad when it was just Adam talking about his projects and they took 10 calls a night. Best years we’re 2000-2001 cuz the two hosts hit a groove and anderson was there with the drops and to give Adam pushback

That is such a Drew move, lol. I bet someone in management got him alone and just squeezed him a little bit and he immediately folded to avoid any awkwardness. It sucks, they had such great chemistry.
That is the polite corporate way of saying "thank you for being here, but Drew is an actual doctor and we're tired of your rants now. We need new blood."

Drew was there, but everyone tuned in for Adam. Any other doctor couldve done Drews part.

Drew plus Riki Rachtman (sp) and/or Psycho Mike made for a nice local radio show ... Drew & Adam made for a national radio show juggernaut.
Yeeeaahh .... Somebody in the 'powers that be' believed (mistakenly) Drew had the majority of the talent, and was the most interesting.

Dr. Drew discovered him, put him on Loveline, then got treated like shit for the next decade. Drew doesn’t owe Adam anything. Adam owes Drew everything!

Adam was a liability and they wanted to pay him what he was worth.
I like Adam, but Dr. Drew built the show and was the core of the show. Dr. Drew started out doing the show for no pay and sacrificed more for the show. Adam would even joke about how Dr. Drew's kids and wife would go out "without papa" when Dr. Drew was at the studio doing loveline. Adam could have been replaced, not easily but could have. Adam should have gotten paid about 60-70% of what Dr. Drew got paid.
I just think Adam should've been content making six figures on late night radio making fun of teemagers' sexual problems and not worried about what Dr. Drew was making.
there were both host of loveline. its equal pay in that sense. There's no getting around it, they both show up every work day both talk, it has to be equal to be fair.

Adam has worlds more radio appeal than Drew. Drew could have been replaced at any time and I would've hardly flinched.

Drew should get 3 times the salary, he's a doctor. Adam Carolla was hired to be funny then starting to think people wanted to hear his philosophy; he's so narcissistic he can't read the writing on the wall.

Adam is the reason I listen...Drew is cool but Adam is the show.
Think about which talent is easier to replace....that’s the key. But it doesn’t matter really because Adam is right; you have two persons as a team they should be paid the same if they are relatively equal.
Umm his philosophy is awesome.
What made it good was Drew hit the medical side, Adam hit the 'common sense' angle .. which was more than just humor.
@young nino. yeah hes a doctor but he wasnt performing surgery. it was a talk radio show where they talked to teens and young adults. so close to equal pay would be better to offer. plus, if it was just dr talking to kids no one would listen. it would have been boring.

This is pure envy. I'm sure Drew didn't think up some scheme to find out how to screw Adam. It's what he was offered and he accepted it. Misplaced anger if I ever heard it. It was decided by the company that Adam is less valuable than Drew and thus was offered less money. How is any of this Drew's fault? The anger is fueled purely by jealousy.
Maybe Drew thought Adam would be offered something he would be happy with, and I'm sure they never gave Drew a number or even an idea of what they're giving someone else and he would never ask what Adam is being paid. That's not his business.
The show was great with the two of them. It really was great. But maybe some exec got tired of Adam's ranting and overall assholishness and wanted to go in a different direction. So he got priced out. He was given the option to take less money than he wanted or walk, so he walked. Don't piss over someone else's success. Be a man and accept that you were not worth what you thought you were worth.

Adam has the stupidest fucking argument in the world here. He's claiming he "built" loveline, and loveline succeeded because of the success of the man show? You got pulled out of obscurity because of Drew. Man Show doesn't exist if you're still teaching driving school and boxing lessons down at the chuckle fuck factory, Adam.
Drew started the show. Adam is a weird talking head that could easily be replaced. Voice is annoying, unfunny, and early adds value. Team Drew.
What's interesting is that Adam claims that when he left the show, it died. He says this despite the fact that the show continued for another 11 years after he left and could have continued. Reality? You decide!
