Arturia Origin Synthesizer Faulty Encoder Replacement/Repair

- In this video I show how to replace the faulty encoders which occur on the Arturia Origin desktop synth.
This could also apply to the keyboard versions too.
I replaced all 33 encoders with the Bournes PE16 series encoders which are of a higher quality than to factory fitted Chinese ones but you might just want to replace a few.
Cost for the parts was approx $70 including shipping and tax to the UK from the USA.
I show which ones are needed, the tools to do it as well as some of the issues i faced doing the job.
The new encoders are made by Bournes and the part numbers are as follows.
I got them from www.digikey.com/
The datasheet on the Bournes encoders is here www.bourns.com...
3x PEC16-4220F-N0024
Dentent with No Switch
OSC waveform, Filter Type, LFO waveform
8x PEC16-4020F-S0024
No Detent with Switch
User white knobs around screen area
5x PEC16-4220F-S0024
Detent with Switch
Jog wheel, OSC select, Filter select, LFO select, ENV select
17x PEC16-4020F-N0024
No Detent with No Switch
Sequencer knobs and sequencer rate
Here is a post from Electromusician.com which prompted me to make this video

Many thanks for this video! I have just successfully replaced all the 33 encoders with Bourns ones from Digikey and it changes the life. Very instructive and detailed video. My Origin is now like new :-)
Great video thanks. I have just replaced all the encoders on a friends unit. I had an issue with the OSC waveform, Filter Type and LFO waveform encoders which essentially got destroyed. The issue was the Select encoder below them being higher than the originals and when I tightened these encoders nuts it stripped the previously mentioned ones apart. Suggestion here is to put two washers instead of a single one and don't overly tighten.
Paul: Thank-you so much! I consider the Arturia Origin one of the greatest synthesizers of all time - this video of yours should be mandatory watching for anyone and everyone who either own's an Origin, or is seriously considering purchasing one - you know: it just might be a good idea to immediately replace *all* the encoders right off the bat, eliminating the majority of frustration associated with using this world-class synthesizer!
+goldenanalog Yes, i a pain that you have to do this your self because Arturia cant or wont do it for you but we know it is a fixable problem out side of the factory so we can bring the Origins that are laying around in the corners of studios with knackered encoders.
I HAVE TWO - I REPAIR WHAT I CAN, I COLLECT PARTS AND METHODS TO REPAIR :)) I'M HAPPY TO CORRESPOND:))
- these are the best synthesizers, but the parts are bad, often from the very beginning the manufacturer wanted to save money - at our expense and the inability to process the sound right after the warranty expired, I broke the ribbon with my finger, I have strong fingers, it is extremely delicate but the best in the world, watch out for it All:))
Thank you Paul you are a life saver!
Man I'm fairly sure my cheap mini lab has the same encoders which is kind of ridiculous. I'm thinking I'm just going to chuck if I can't fins cheap encoders.
I tried this operation but now getting only color bars when powering on. Hope I didn’t brick it somehow
I'm trying to find replacement rotary encoders for the Arturia Keylab 49, will the encoders specified in this video work?
Hello, does anyone know if those are the same encoders used in other products? I have a Minilab MKII ... a LOT of bad encoders, wanting to repleace... and wondering is the same part... or wich part number are compatible
My Origin cant save patches and multis anymore despite i have deleted about 15-20 sounds
Thank you for this video, anyway i have a problem, after opening, detaching/reattaching wires and closing it, the screen seems to have no "backlight" - I can barely see the shape of the pictures in it, but it's almost black - Can possibly be the small stripe (36:48) that is not attached well, or should i have to investigate elsewhere ?
@37:23 or 38:38 - Could it be one of those power cables not properly plugged in? (replies 2 years later ;)
What is the average price of replacing an encoder on a synth? One of my encoders on an Analog 4 mk2 is a little wonky. The person I bought it from is willing to give me a partial refund for the faulty encoder fix. Thanks!
Love you, Thanks alot! :D
So, the encoders can not be cleaned with "DeoxIT" spray?.
+Pete Urbann Some people have had success with that method but I find its getting the cleaner in to the encoder. The bodies are quite well sealed and the other way is wiggling the shaft whilst spraying it but i'm not sure if there are any lubricants used or seals around the shaft, could really do with taking one apart to find out.
Arturia beat step also have encoder problem it is not good electronic components using for arturia products it is like Chinese toy
First of all, before touching inside a synth, you ought to ground your self ! You will avoid killing IC with static electricity, it's deadly for these little things !
I had this accident in my A6 Andromeda, cost 700 € and it was not easy to find a replacement part, I had to wait more than one year ....
Friendly advising !
All this because a greedy manufacturer wanted to save about $15 on each unit produced.
I'm sure that even the Bourns ones will eventually fail... Despicable mechanical digital encoders, and dreaded TACT switches should be banned from any product.
You mentioned the service department, they a horrible, and will not return emails.
+Pete Urbann I requested a return when it first had the problem and i had no reply.

Arturia doesn't seem to have a 'post-sale-service' department. Or a capability. Or even an interest to support their products. I won't buy any more. I own an origin too.
I just purchased a BeatStep(really good sequencer) and plan to buy a MatrixBrute. I will be writing a letter to support groups to get them to write letters so Arturia can get their collective head out of their ass.
