The problem is the title of this video, it should have been "Most sold songs year by year (1890-2019), but not "evolution of popular music".
If an Act didn't have the Billboard, (USA), No.1 Single of the Year, they are not in the List. That is how Andy Gibb had the No.1 Hit of 1978, with 'Shadow Dancing'. I love songs by Pink, Sarah Bereilles, Dixie Chicks, Blonde, Nickel Creek, Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley, Kingston Trio, Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Allison Kraus, Good Charlotte, Etta James, Nancy Sinatra, The Weather Girls, Dolly Parton, Mary Mary, .... to name just a couple and missing a lot (the list goes on and on and I'm always discovering new to me music). There's always good new music. And there's always good old music. The are disturbing and unlikeable songs amoung any age of music. Older music features all kinds of sexist and racist themes (really listen to 1950's pop songs or try and get your hands on US political songs from when bringing along music was part of any mildly successful political campaign). Newer music has sexist and racist messages too. There's not some perfect age of music where there weren't bad messages in music as well as good.

Notice Jazz by far dominated the 20th century. Until Rock came along you either listen to Jazz or Country. Music like Blues and Classical music that was still being made at the time kind of took a back seat to Jazz. Without Jazz and blue you don't Rock. I guess Rock is kind of its own thing. At the same it has it origins in Country, Blues and Jazz.
