When I was in the 8th grade I wore a Black Sabbath shirt to school and the principal tried to confiscate it and make me wear a shirt from the lost and found. I went along with it just to save myself trouble . After school I went to get it back and he told me I could get it back after the school year was over ! I was pissed so I went home and told my Dad , an old school WW2 sailor who had an open mind and liked a lot of rock music , although he preferred Chet Atkins above anyone else. He absolutely hit the roof when I told him I was made to change shirts and was mad as hell when I said they would not return my shirt that day. Next day he drove me to school and followed me into the building. I was a little concerned but I couldn't do much about it. I don't know exactly what he said to the principal but my shirt was at my house that evening and Dad said ' wear it to school tomorrow, nobody will be trying to tell you to change it ' . I did and he was right. Nothing was said about it. I wore rock shirts almost every day. Judas Priest, Sabbath , Iron Maiden, Motorhead , etc so it would have been a real pain in the ass to have metal shirts prohibited from school. After that day lots of my friends wore their concert T shirts and I think my Dad was the reason why they were allowed. Thanks Dad you were the best

I work for a large corporation and am supposed to wear company clothes every day but I make an exception every Friday when I wear either a punk or metal tee shirt . I've had it questioned many times but I'm nearly 50 and I don't intend to change my ways.

I'm thankful my dad got me into rock and metal when I was a kid. He grew up when metal just started, and heard a lot of groups throughout the 70s and 80s. After I was born, he would still listen to all of it, even when I took trips with him. It was a shame I never got to go to any concerts with him.

When I was younger and playing in my band, I was stopped inside of a Wendy’s by a woman in her 70’s by the soda fountain, and she asked me all sorts of questions about my tattoos and stretched ears. She said she used to be a hippie in the 60’s and loved my whole look, and to keep being myself and never change for anyone. We were in a rush to get to our show, and I regret not getting to talk to her longer than I did. I will remember that interaction for the rest of my life. I got conservative parents, but they never criticized my love for metal. My mom just simply told me, "You can listen to metal, just don't blast it so loud in the house." That was her only rule. She never touched the band merch I worked hard to buy. And my Dad even rewarded me with tickets to one of my favorite local band's show one time, and he's no metal fan as well. Basically, they don't care what music you listen to, as long as your character is good. I got lucky for having this type of parent.

It's refreshing to hear stories about conservatives being sane, rational and tolerant people. I KNOW they exist. I've spoken to a lot of them over the years, but these days their side of the media is dominated by crazy lunatics. It's hard to find genuine, sane conservatives speaking up - and when you do, they get labelled as traitors or RINOs.

@@AnonEyeMouse Yeah being conservative just means you want smaller government. State/local level solutions to issues and not federal solutions to issues. That's all a "Conservative" really is. The issue is that over years all these things become attributed to "Conservative" or "Liberal" and it's bunk. No such thing as "liberal music" or "Conservative music" music is music, it's universal. The media mis-informs and plays up every incident for drama and ratings. Our whole society is based on mis-representations of people and groups. It's honestly a crazy time to live right now.

They would periodically ask me questions about it to see if it was affecting my mental state. Like asking if the music gave me violent thoughts or if I was getting into Satanism and stuff like that (because the Satanic Panic was still going then.) Which it didn't and which I wasn't into. I just loved the music. So they knew that it wasn't a problem. Years later, I began reflecting on a memory of my parents actually having to buy some of my CDs because of the Parental Advisory sticker. One album in particular stands out in my mind -- Cannibal Corpse's "Bloodthirst". Which had a pretty graphic cover. I was 12 when I got it. So I asked them years later why they let me listen to these albums and they basically just said: "Because it's not like it was changing your personality in any way. You weren't lashing out or anything." Plus my parents grew up listening to Sabbath and Zeppelin. So they kinda understood. I'm still a metalhead as well. 🤘🏽

The oldest loves progressive rock and classical as well as hard rock and metal. The youngest one likes thrash and black metal. They like some of my metal, but they prefer their own and that is fine with me. Blaming a style of music for bad behaviour is ridiculous. It's not the fault of the music. My mom REALLY doesn't like my most metal (the sound is just too rough and aggressive for her, most of the time), but she and I have our own rules for all the music we listen to:
      - isn't blasphemous against God (we're both born again Christians)
      - isn't really sexual
      - doesn't sound like it's from the pita of Hell (ultimately, I hate black and death metal)
Then we're good with listening to it. A few montha ago, my mom told something amazing. She was curious about the Red Baron, so she did some reading up about him. And you know what she discovered? "The Red Baron" by Sabaton. She listened to it.
      And she LOVED it.
      I. Was. ECSTATIC!!!!!!! I *LOVE* Sabaton, and I'd been trying to get her to listen for a while. I'm very much a softie when it comes to metal, but I like Metallica, Rammstein (not all of their music, obviously), Skillet, the HU, Babymetal (I didn't think it was possible to combine kawaii with metal), and many others I need not name here. Soon, I get her to ease up on some of my metal tastes. We're both conservative Christians, so that should be a testament to how varied the metal subgenres can be.

Also I think it's good that teenagers acknowledge and understand that there is pain, injustice, and suffering in the world. It allows them to build up resilience for the tough times that are going to come into their lives, and gives them a community to share that pain with. Right on! My parents were the same way. They didn't like the music, but they would let me listen to it. They would periodically ask me questions about it to see if it was affecting my mental state. Like asking if the music gave me violent thoughts or if I was getting interested in Satanism and stuff like that (because the Satanic Panic was still going then.) Which it didn't and which I wasn't into. I just loved the aggression and the energy behind the music. You weren't lashing out or anything. So it was harmless." Plus my parents grew up listening to Sabbath and Zeppelin. So they kinda understood. I'm still a metalhead as well. 🤘🏽

And yeah, both of my parents can appreciate some meaningful lyrical content, and even though thrash isn't really his thing, he still appreciates the talent and dedication to reach it.
Norwegian, (mostly) cause it's super huge there, but totally, agreed.
I really try to listen to as many bands I can get my hands on. I still have standards and preferences, but I also try to latch onto smaller bands I find on the internet just trying to promote their debuts.
If you look hard enough, you can find some pretty neat stuff.
And yeah, thank you. People can be super strict on gender roles and stereotypes.

@@justforplaylists6375 There is a channel here on UA-cam that throws out full releases of the most underground bands. Usually in the Black Metal/Thrash/Doom/Death Metal vein. The channel is called OdiumNostrum. You should check it out. The channel always drops quality releases. There's also Black Metal Promotion as well.

Everyone always has an opinion about what others do. Growing up in the 80s and 90s it was music, today its video games. In the USA the same people saying we should ban music, art and games (let's call them the arts) are the same ones saying we are losing our freedoms. Now that I'm a parent, ive explained to my son that the arts are a way of a release from the pressures of day to day life but thats all they are. When I was growing up, I beat the shit out of a drumset. Later, I played some video games (think doom, not solitaire). Its a disconnect from reality. Try getting to know someone before you judge them.

I get it all the time from the various cult like 'tribes'. Those on the extreme left want to ban Eric Clapton & Phil Collins & now John Lydon. Those on the extreme right & neo-liberals want to ban bands who profess to be left wing such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The extreme feminists want to ban who they call misogynists & even all male bands or mixed sexed bands where the female member(s) aren't the lead singer such as New Order & Arcade Fire. The extreme Eurofanatics say that the British music scene is finished. The toxic positivity movement would hate most metal, indie rock, Roxy Music, the Clash and the Duke album by Genesis.

I once just played Infant Annihilator to my parents to see their reaction. They were always chilled of me listening metal, but I wanted to see if I could push it. They just shrugged, told me that I should listen to it with my earphones. I asked them if they're not concerned. They replied that they'd only be concerned if my behavior changed significantly and that they could see i wasn't a troubled kid. I really had great parents

0:16 Kid on the left seems to have an Alice Cooper T-shirt there. - I know it was more "shocking" back then, but Alice Cooper is literally one of the nicest guys.
On the other hand there's MetallicA's '...And Justice for All', which... yea, is quite dark you really listen to it, but also really not the most offensive thing.
Just because music and imagery sounds or looks aggressive, some people think it drives people to become bad. Yes, occasionally, particularly the mentally unstable, but not in general. - Then go listen to those lazy-ass rappers talking about gang-crap, shooting up people, selling/doing drugs, making money and showing off their bling to get bitches...
