Regardless of opinion, nu metal was the last time that heavy music was mainstream and reached millions of people. Bands like Korn and Linkin Park were gateway band to heavier music for countless fans. EDIT: Wow, thanks for the 10k likes everyone! Nice to see how my little comment generated a robust discussion! 😁
@@cammac66 that genre never saw half the success nu metal did. Limp Bizkit had the fastest selling rock album of all time. Like it or not Nu Metal was the last real movement in rock that dominated all the way to the top of the mainstream.

As much of a snob as he is, he has the best take on the genre. It was simply people being creative and just mixing shit around and writing heavy riffs. It wouldnt surprise me if he was also being ironic just to be annoying because every other musician at the time was clowning on Nu-Metal and him saying it was badass probably upset some people haha

Sebastian gets it. There was a time when music was so elitist, only the very wealthy would ever hear it. Being snooty about music is some Louis the 14th, French aristocracy nonsense.
Heavymetalfan 11 I feel like when it comes to music and art overall, there’s no such thing as objectively good. Everyone’s different and has their own opinions. I definitely have my favorite bands but if someone else didn’t like them and preferred Justin Bieber that doesn’t make either of us wrong or correct. Some music that is considered legendary nowadays had a terrible reception when it was first released, was it objectively bad at first but became good later? 🤔
I've never been a fan of Smashing Pumpkins but I have seen a lot of interviews with Billy Corgan and in my opinion, he seems like he is genuinely in love with music and the creation of art through sound and I find that quiet endearing
Billy, in my opinion, is one of, if not the most talented musical creator i know of. His (and his bands) style varies so much from song to song. With songs from Cherub rock to Tonight, Tonight. Their songs all vary so much. Not just between albums but within albums. Its like heavy opera. So creative. I don’t see them get enough credit for the pure art they produce.
I think bands like Korn and Linkin Park are the exact opposite of "misogynistic and fratty" most lyrics are self deprecating and misanthropic than anything . I guess its mostly testosteronic but so was practically every metal genre before the 00s Compared to Glam and death metal or pop punk Nu Metal is probably the least misogynistic of anything
Most people can’t tell you why they hate limp Bizkit or why Fred sucks. They say no substance, then you point to lyrics with substance or shitty lyrics from bands they like and they say because he’s a dbag. Honestly don’t care if a rock star is a dbag. Billy (Corgan) is right again. System of a Down and Deftones alone justify that entire genre. Toxicity is one of the greatest albums ever created, in any genre.
It was cool. But an embodiment of the 90s, no. It was a subgenre and a single facet of tons of different colors and shapes that the 90s offered. It also hasn't gone away.
Tom morello is cringe if cringe were a person. Because it's not really rooted from heavy metal, and it's much more experimental, poppy and punkish compared to the subgenres considered true metal. Which is not really a bad thing, we already have too many heavy, thrash, death and black metal bands, and bands like Slipknot and Deftones wouldn't have their unique sound if they were real metal.

In all fairness, most of these interviews are from the early 2000's, a time when being catty, petty and close minded as hell was "the culture". Nu metal was really hated at the time too, it was "the other" for a lot of genres (pop, punk, metal) and speaking of it positively was rare and almost rebellious. @Mooky Nu metal isn't really a "black" thing, however rap metal definitely is! Nu Metal bands like Korn didn't really have the rap vibes, they had guest rappers like Ice Cube on their earlier albums but most of Korns body of work has more of an Alternative/Metal vibe in my opinion, especially the last 3 albums, their influences come more from bands like Pantera, faith no more, Primus, Dokken, RHCP, Metallica, ETC!
Butthurt would only apply if it was actually a "competition". I don't like the growling, I'm an old school metal guy, as far as singing is concerned. I don't see competition from something I'm not interested in to begin with, they certainly are not competing with anything that I would listen to. There also seems to be plenty of room for everyones taste these days with technology, nobody is really " competing" to get a record deal with a label anymore, I record all the instruments myself in my garage with a computer, from drums and guitars to vocals and percussion, no labels, no paying for studio time or engineers. It's a different world for musicians than the one I grew up in (42 years old). Opinions are like smelly buttholes, we all have them and everyone else thinks they stink😋.
Also, Chino said this about nu metal in general as Deftones went on, using Korn as an example. "As Korn go on, it's the same things-bad childhoods and mean moms. It gets too old after a while. How old is Jonathan? Thirty? How long has it been since he lived with his parents?"

So here’s my thing… as a person of color… Nu-Metal basically was my gateway getting into rock… having that hip hop element was dope for me. Seeing Linkin Park and Korn really incorporate those elements where cold to me. The genre introduced me to the likes of Deftones, Coal Chamber, Static X, System of a Down and Slipknot I do agree with Tom Morello with the aspect of how some bands in the sub genre basically put this misogynistic, frat-esque aspect, however, I feel that post-Grunge did that way more and way worse.. I feel they basically singled out Limp Bizkit there.
It's incredible how sour they are about a band that never took themselves seriously and happened to have bangers that millions of people enjoyed, the stuck up mentality that defies of what rock was, they hate limp biskit cause they sang about parties and "going crazy" when they had other themes in their lyrics, but still if they only had the "rollin" lyrics, rock always had this "party" vibe, hell how much classic rock songs talk about partying all night or getting wasted? People forgot glam rock, even since the 60s there we're light hearted and party rock songs and nobody flinched, it seems they hate that a band that have members that don't hate themselves or their parents and were succesfull without becoming depressed f*cks after that (like most of the people talking s*it in The vídeo)
Tom Morello sounded so weird to me like "what are your thoughts on nu metal" -" yeah rage against the machine was fucking awesome, we'd make an album every for years" Like wtf xD I get he's explaining the context of his opinion but he sounded like he just started talking about his band out of nowhere, being completely indifferent to the question

If you're a true musician, you are always open to musical genres and influences from all sides. That means you don't always have to like everything (because personal flavor varies) but at least consider listening and getting exposed to different genres and types of music. Just as it helps to have played different instruments a few times.
I listen to just 'bout everything and my UA-cam "Recommended Playlist" Is a thing of complete chaos. Classical, like Beethoven and Mozart, Folk music, from the 30s-80s, including in 6+ languages, Pop-punk, Pop, Heavy Metal, Thrash, Grunge, Bit of Hip hop, EDM, to straight Orchestra or experimental. I don't like everything in each genre, but it's pretty hard to find a genre with nothing in it for me. Morello and Billy are just mad that a lot of Nu Metal bands out sold them. Plain and simple, they believe themselves to be better than everyone and thus should have more success. Ego is the killer of creativity.
I don’t care for the new age of metal. The super fast almost scale type guitar and chug breakdowns with sonic playing drums, I like the rhythm changes, tempo changes, scream/clean/almost rap and sure enough riffs that were melodically put together.
When Billy Corgan speaks, I listen. The guy writes music from the future CONSTANTLY! Their albums sell kinda iffy but never fail, 5-6 years later it's the new sound. Plus, what he said is true for all music: intermingling of genres almost always creates better music down the road.

I've been defending Nu-Metal for years because as Billy Corgan says, it's the mix of all these different genres that makes this style unique. Of course, some bands represent this thing quite awkwardly but if I had to introduce a person to this environment it would be Nu-Metal because much more accessible!
Basically this. Korn made the genre mainstream and Korn is HEAVILY inspired by Mr. Bungle. Mike Patton is the pretentious one who should be apologizing.
Nu Metal has always been incredible. It has spawned so many albums that have helped so many people through the darkest of times. To hear musicians try to undermine the importance of this genre by stating that it is not as credible in nature as their own message is sad to see. The fact is, Nu Metal has saved countless lives and has offered up memorable songs that kill it by even today's math-metal standards.
@Maldito Mur They love you when you aren't known by the masses and turn on you when you are. You really can't win if you care about the opinions of others.
Nu metal was like any other genre. Only a handful of the artists who fell under that label and became successful were truly great and the others were so so. Like the Deftones created some really amazing music with staying power. And, they've got a cohesive style that's unique and recognizable without every song having to conform to a "sound". I've never thought of them as belonging to a certain genre. To me really great music isn't concerned with fitting into a particular style. The style arises from what you're trying to express.
Literally everyone back then who complained about nu-metal did so because they were piss scared that nu-metal was going to wipe them off the map like grunge did to hair metal. Think about it. And once nu metal died so did the success of rock music. It’s never been the same since. Still stuck doing heavy metal for 40 years now.

I only like last resort but I don't mind people liking their music. Music is subjective that's why metal elitists should shove their hate up their own ass
When I was a kid, I uses to be scared of Metal music, like a hell lot. My uncle/godfather is your typical old school metalhead and I was scared of him and what he listened (Krator, Slayer, Metallica, etc), that whenever I was forced to visit him, I would grab his cassette tapes and hide them. As years passed and I was getting more acquainted with music channels (MTV, VH1, among others), I got into bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed and, of course, Linkin Park. However, I never paid close attention to the "Metal" side of things but that of the rapping vocals. To this day, nonetheless, I think this music genre we all know as "Nu Metal" might have deeply (and unconsciously) helped me to overcome the irrational fear I had towards Metal in general. Currently I listen to Prog rock/Metal and jazz and its derivations (particularly jazz fusion), but I'm also open to a wide variety of other metal genres and music styles in general. With that said, I can't hate on Nu Metal at all, and will honestly never understand the hatred it gets. To me, I guess, it is all a matter of attachment and not knowing how to let go that is getting others to hate on it. But what do I know. Love music. Music is not supposed to divide but unify us all.
They aren’t. Everybody in this clip is hating on Limp Bizkit. In fact the only one that was being genuinely supportive was Billy and when he talked, MTV played One Step Closer over him like implying that THAT was the nu-metal he found so fantastic.
Regardless of opinion, nu metal was the last time that heavy music was mainstream and reached millions of people. Bands like Korn and Linkin Park were gateway band to heavier music for countless fans.

However, I never paid close attention to the "Metal" side of things but that of the rapping vocals.
