I'm rather surprised that Michael hasn't read Tolkien's books. I've read them all and love them, but I have minimal experience with more classic literature that he tends to reference.

I had to watch the movies to get myself hyped up to read the LOTR books. Once I found out that the extended edition was a thing, I was determined to read each book all the way through before I watched each installment. They are indeed amazing books. The first two are a bit of a difficult read but the Return of the King is much easier.
