    You can put 2 of your favorite cows in a pen and hope for the best all day. You still won't get a calf. You need a bull to make things happen.

    I don't see the big deal here that everyone is outraged by. It's faster, selective, and the breeding is basically just using surrogates. It's probably even better for the enviorment if there are less cows in the world because the inferior cows are being replaced with the new ones. If one superior cow can give the same milk as three inferior ones, then less resources are being used.

      Cheapest, sure but that because its genetically modified crops, sprayed in chemicals at nearly every stage of growth then heavily refined and full of chemical additives.
      It can sit on a shelf because it doesn't have enough nutrition to support fungal or bacterial growth.
      And thats why America is so full of cancer and diabetes. Because its amazingly profitable growing chemical laden crops to make poisoned food to support sales and profits of the health care system, Monsanto and big petro-chemical.

    Selective breeding DOES have disadvantages (for the animal). Selective breeding specifically and entirely for milk production, for example, can (and often does) compromise other parts of the animal. Cows typically get to breed with each other more randomly, and that means all of their genes and traits, more or less, balance out. But when you selectively breed for one thing and actively ignore everything else, they suffer in areas. I think the guy who denied that knows very well that he's misleading Vice, but ultimately, he cares about profit.

    • @whitneya.6930
      @whitneya.6930 6 років тому +12

      Where did he say he selected for milk yield and nothing else? You can crank milk all day, but if your cow doesn't have strong feet, strong immune system, adequate body capacity, good fertility, among many other traits for a healthy animal, she'll leave the herd before she can make you any money or have more than one calf. Especially if she costs $20,000 or more.

    • @mariab1631
      @mariab1631 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I disagree with the dairy economist, selective breeding's biggest disadvantage is that it reduces the size of the gene pool - as you said it may cause negative genes and traits to be overexpressed while trying to express a positive gene. Another issue is that eventually, it may cause interbreeding as there are so few non-related animals.
      My parents are dairy farmers, a much smaller operation than the one shown on vice and they're not based in the USA but one of their problems is getting suitable bulls for breeding (bull = male, cow = female). There are very few breeding bulls available due to a variety of reasons (most bulls are used for meat production, you only need one bull for one heard of cows - so it makes little sense to keep additional bulls around and selective breeding - less sophisticated than the genomic index in the video but in general bulls that are likely to produce cows with good milk yield would be chosen for breeding).

      They also live much shorter,out producing their health.They may only live for 4 years instead of 10 years.You then have the cost of all the down time to consider of waiting of a calf to grow for 2 years before it is producing any milk.It will take most of its first lactation to even pay for the cost of raising it.Less productive cows that live longer have their advantages

    • @mariab1631
      @mariab1631 6 років тому

    • @q-_-p.d-_-b
      @q-_-p.d-_-b 6 років тому +8

      It's a scam. It's just almond colored water. Theres literally like 20 almonds per gallon of almond milk. 1 cup is a measly ~30 calories. A handfull of real almonds is 3 times that. You're better off just eating them. Unless you're lactose intolerant or trying to lose weight. Besides it's not good for toddlers.

      These folks are far from hillbillies. Don't mistake their speech patterns for ignorance. That's a common mistake. Among other things, many high end farmers BUILD their own very large tractors and other equipment, and I don't fucking mean recycling junk! It's a competitive, sophisticated industry.

    One day when you grow up you will realize that cows and farm animals are just like a plastic container, they "make" cows just to cut them up in pieces put them in a sealed box and store them in some warehouse until the buyer comesand picks up his product, or the buyer orders the product and they ship it to him, the end.

    There is something called Humane and Inhumane and Insane. This is
    totally Inhumane. This kind of testing is hell on earth for these poor
    beings. Humanity always shows cruelty and barbarity on the weak. Where
    is the justice for them. Be it the slaughter houses or the horrible
    animal farms humans have the habit of imposing cruelty on the
    defenseless . There will never be peace on earth, never.

    The parts we don't see in this video. The calves are seperated from their birth mothers at a specific time for superfast weaning purposes. The birth mothers literally howl for days on end with separation anxiety. Stuff the animals mental state - its all about money and lots of it!. Same old story which ultimately does not end well.

    This all sounds great, but also a little worrying. One of the things I wish they would've touched on is how the selective breeding affects resistance to viruses/bacteria etc or how super cows affect market. Maybe they look at immunity in the genetic tests ? Hopefully vice does a pt 2 cause there's a lot more to talk about I think.

  • @DoubleDogDare54
    @DoubleDogDare54 6 років тому +1

    Just out of curiosity - I assume half the produce of the "super cows" must be male - unless selected against that possibility - so, how have the bull calves from such a breeding program worked out as breeding stock? Is there a method by which they can be genetically tested early on and determined to be "super", same as the heifer calves?
    Just wondering. Fascinating video, by the way.
