This is when singers knew how to sing. They didn’t need dancers, flashing lights, smoke, or breaking guitars on stage. They just needed to have a great song and a great voice.

Maurice Gibb wanted to keep this song for themselves. It was a huge hit for her. But… The Bee Gee’s version is so much better. ❤️❤️

Its Barry Gibb and Michael Jackson dueting on a song they wrote together. The studio recording is the video. So great to see these great friends and songwriters getting together to write and perform this.
The name of the song escapes me right now but if you search you'll find it - it's the only one with Michael and Barry singing. Brilliant together.
I am a huge BeeGees fan, I have devoured everything to do with them on UA-cam, watched every video, every interview. Anything you need to know, Ask me....I couldnt know more.

@@billybob042665 - True, Barry did write solo, but many songs done by others were written by all three of them together. This song "Heartbreaker" for Warwick, "Guilty" for Streisand, "Chain Reaction" for Diana Ross, "Immortality" for Celine Dion, "Islands in the Stream" for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, "If I can't have you" for Yvonne Elliman, all written by B, R and M Gibb as were most Bee Gees songs. "Woman in Love" for Streisand, "Emotion" for Sandra Sang were written by B and R Gibb. They gave away SO MANY great songs!

I don't know that the Bee Gees ever sang the whole song in concert. They sang it as part of their medley, which was great.

@@lauravettoretti1323 - They gave away SO many good songs (Islands in the Stream another great one) but the radio stations in the US STUPIDLY wouldn't play their music. The UK wasn't far behind. Their loss.

Maurice said in an interview that he was always sorry they didn’t keep this song to record and release themselves. You can tell how much he loved it when they were doing their medley versions in all of their live concerts. I just bought several new CD and video version from Amazon. Just love BeeGees… They remastered and released the 1989 Australian live, at their prime, especially Robin…❤️❤️❤️❤️🎸🎸🎸

This was my Favorite song by Dionne Warwick and it was years before I knew the Bee Gees wrote it. That was an aha moment.❤

@@Georgia__Girl - It was credited to all of them but the title is a giveaway for me as to the basic idea. Robin was a voracious reader and "Islands in the Stream" was Ernest Hemingway's last novel in 1950. Definitely his genre of reading material. Robin did a beautiful acoustic version. It is on You Tube.
Although Warwick’s voice is lovely, I prefer the BeeGees version. I wonder what it was about the lyrics that didn’t resonate with Dionne? Enjoyed your reaction Chad. Thanks.
Imagine her having to be convinced with some serious Barry arm twisting to do this. Mo said he was in the car after it was recorded and just sick that they didn't record it themselves. She is fabulous, and you are right Chad. She just needs to sit there and sing, nothing else.
I saw one interview where Mo said he was literally "crying over it, but realized he'd have to settle with doing the backup vocals; and that was 'nice'😏". I've never understood why she kept being reluctant to do the song, though.
@@DianaJG8 I could see that. They put everything into a song, knew how good it was, and she sent it back to them multiple times. Feels like she was happy it was a hit, but didn't love the song itself, like they did. (especially Mo, since he was so emotional about it).
Their version is gorgeous.

Chad, a wonderful song whether Dionne sang it or our precious Bee Gees covered it at one of their concerts, though I definitely prefer their version to hers. Real shock, right? Great reaction as always. I really feel like we've gotten a head start on our Bee Gees marathon weekend. Can't wait!

it has always been something special when BeeGees have written a song for other artists. I read that BeeGees already had an artist in mind while writing. Barry once said that it was then a conviction to present the song to the artist. In my opinion, they always got it right. Above all, there are songs that they were able to present themselves fantastically 👍👏🙋♀️

Songs the Bee Gees wrote for other people often gave those singers their biggest hits in years including for Warwick, Streisand, Ross and Rogers/Parton. Ironic that they wrote so many great songs that became massive hits for others and yet couldn't get airplay (let alone a hit) for years for themselves. It was as if their name was toxic. They gave away so many songs that other bands would have killed for! The Bee Gees used to do "Heartbreaker" practically acapella...just a simple rhythm guitar and three (magnificent) voices. Dionne did have a lovely voice.

She’s Whitney Houston’s Aunt, where do you think she got it, oh & Whitney’s Mom, Dionne’s Sister sings too, another very Talented Family! And she is being backed up here by The Bee Gees, who wrote this song for her, can our ears get any luckier!!! This is one of my favorite songs ever, I love it to this day!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏻
Ms. Dionne and Whitney are maternal 1st cousins. Both their mothers are sisters.
Even in the sixties, they gave great songs to others. 'Morning Of My Life' to Esther and Abi Ofarim, 'Only One Woman' to The Marbles or 'Sweetheart' to Engelbert Humperdinck. BTW, 'Words' was written for Cliff Richards. But his company sent it back, so they recorded it by themselves. Lateron, Cliff heard about what his management had done and was very, very angry about them. They didn't inform him. True story!

I don’t think Cliff would have given it the depth it needs.He’s a bit too pop.(For my liking).

You can see in many videos from the earlier years that singers performed without much around. Here was only the singer and the song in the foreground. Dionne has a wonderful voice and I think her performance is brilliant but I like the BeeGees version even better. Listen to it. Therefore, I strongly recommend you to watch one of the live medleys.
I have always loved Dionne Warwick's voice, starting back in the '60s with all those Bacharach/David hits. I love the arrangement of this song, too.😊🥰

I don’t know if anyone else has told you…she is Whitney Houston’s aunt. I did know that she resisted this. It sounded more BeeGees than her. But, as you know, she trusted the brothers and it was a huge hit. I did not know how strongly Maurice felt about it though. They mostly included it in their medley around the microphone. Barry has said many times that singing around the microphone was his favorite part of their concerts. It always reminded him of their beginnings. Take Care

Apparently when the Bee Gees presented this song to Dionne she wasn’t completely sold on it but went ahead and recorded it trusting the Bee Gees judgement that it would be a hit, the rest as they say is history, a great song, a great vocalist with in point backing vocals by ……… the Bee Gees, it doesn’t get much better and the Bee Gees did the same thing for Diana Ross, the write and did the backing vocals on Chain Reaction too!!
The fact that Dionne Warwick is a great singer is a matter of record. ( No punn intended) However, the reason it looks so effortless here is because she's lipsinching to the studio version of the song.
Your observation on point!!. I like to add, Ms. Dionne voice always brings her "A" game to a song. Ms. Dionne evented effortless powerful singing, lol. I always loved Dionne Warwick. Of course I'm a kid of the 60s and 70s so there was no such thing as bad music. Whatever you liked it was there for you from British Invasion II to Motown and the southern rock of Lynard Skynard and Southern California sound of the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac New York City had their own sound with folk singers like Peter Paul and Mary and Simon and Garfunkel. Chad you're going to be a very busy man. Hope you enjoy this journey as much as it was first hand.
