    I managed to get everything setup as instructed. One thing I had to do that wasn't instructed here was to edit the config.php which is in the hidden folder ~/.owncloud_docker/config.php
    I had to add my local server ip address and external domain name into the trusted domains section
    0 => '192.168.1.67',
    1 => 'mydomain.com',
    I couldn't connect with my phone or from another computer if i didn't do this.

    A developer should write an easy setup and run application for OwnCloud like MAMP. A simple windows, where the user can select the docker container for the OwnCloud application, a docker container for the OwnCloud database, fill in some network settings and press run. I would also pay for an app like this.

    Hi Todd, would Owncloud allow me to see proxies of the shared files rather than actually syncing everything? I have bandwidth issues at work but would like access to my files if I need them.

    • @ToddOlthoff
      @ToddOlthoff  5 років тому

      Thanks for the comment. No it syncs the actual files so this solution is probably not for you. You may want to store the files online somewhere or you could use file sharing to gain access to your files. Hope that helps!

    Hi, I have a question please, i recently moved on HIGH SIERRA CLIENT on a macbook connected to our server EL CAPITAN with network folder located on it. So I would like recreate on macbook a MOBILE account. El capitan permitted to me to create a mobile account in the user&groups system preferences (in high Sierra too) and immediately I got the pop up menu with the folder to be synced and modality (home folder or some of its folder, login, logout,manually etc..On OS High Sierra this pop up menu disappeared totally and I can NOT control the syncing mobile account anymore!!! AAAAH!!! Did Apple decide to remove also that option? Thanks in advance for helping me.

    Somehow I'm unable to get loclahost running even though I did the setup as per video .I've tried changing ports / running it in different browser but I always get site not reachable in browser. In docker it shows application is running and logs are also normal. Any idea what could be wrong

    What are your thoughts on Tonido, Pogoplug or Spotdox? I believe they are more turnkey solutions than ownCloud with native macOS support. Spotdox seems interesting to me because it piggy backs off DropBox to access all your machine's files.

    Hello, how do you update OwnCloud in Docker? do you have to do some special procedures to do it? or you simply update within the app? also how do you manage Storage for Data? is it unlimited? ( meaning you can use as much storage as you have available on disk that docker is installed on?)
    Please advise

    Once I’ve get this setup on my MacBook Air will this work on all of my devices because I set it up on virtualbox it didn’t work once I shut down virtualbox like iPhone that I’ve got the app on plus android device didn’t work as well the text you paste in atom it’s not there I couldn’t find it.

    • @ToddOlthoff

      Thanks for the comment. This needs to be run as a server on a machine that is always on or it won't work with your other devices. I wouldn't' recommend running it on a laptop unless you are leaving it in one place and on all the time.

    one more question I would like to copy a bunch of files to my owncloud without using a client. I understand it's ok to do this and use occ files:scan to update the data base. All the commands i've tried don't work. Do you have the correct code to use?
    This is what i was using:
    sudo -u www-data php occ files:scan

    i am getting the following message when trying to create the admin account in Owncloud for the first time; "Error while trying to create admin user: Failed to connect to the database: An exception occurred in driver: SQLSTATE(HY000)(1045) Access denied for user root@172.18.0.3 (using password:YES)"
    What could be the issue here?

    • @ToddOlthoff
      @ToddOlthoff  6 років тому

      Thanks for the comment. Yes I could do that but for now, you would open the port that you used in the set up (8080 or whatever you have after the localhost in your url you use to get to the owncloud instance. Hope that helps.

    Awesome video! I have been using nextcloud for a little while now on a raspberry pi and I kept hearing about docker. I was not sure what exactly it did... and now I know! ahahah Can you easily do the same thing when installing nextcloud with docker on the mac?

    • @ToddOlthoff
      @ToddOlthoff  6 років тому

      Thanks for the comment. You should be able to do the same thing with Nextcloud if they have an instance you can run on it. I’ll have to do some research and look at doing a screencast on that in the future.

    Is it only I who got this: net/http: request canceled (Client.Timeout exceeded while awaiting headers)" trying to fetch OwnCloud/High Sierra...bummer when video instructions made it look easy while not speaking of issues and how to address them! Wasted an evening it seems...wow, lots of others on Githud did also!

    • @ToddOlthoff
      @ToddOlthoff  6 років тому

      Thanks for the comment. So sorry you experienced that error. I didn’t have that come up for me at all and it is difficult to do a video on all of the possible things that might go wrong for any particular user in setting things up. Usually there are some kind of fix that comes out on Github for it or through the updates. You could also try reinstalling it to see if that works.

  • @srmpc882

    First its a great video, that you made. I do not understand why you picked owncloud and not nextcloud. This guy macminicolo.net/blog/files/install-owncloud-on-a-mac-mini-server.html made a manual for owncloud, no need for docker (at least pre Server 5.6.1). Earlier I ran owncloud and now nextcloud w/o Docker. I only have one minor htts issue. Keep up the good work.

    • @ToddOlthoff
      @ToddOlthoff  6 років тому

      Thanks for the comment. Seems that your mariaDB part of your installation did not happen or it didn’t get set up initially when you first launched Owncloud. I would go back and do the install portion and see if that doesn’t fix it.

    • @ug8036
      @ug8036 6 років тому

      Thank you. Installation was successful. It seems that an error has occurred because of different Volumes PATH.

    Great video Todd. Iam getting this error : ERROR: yaml.parser.ParserError: while parsing a block collection
    in "./docker-compose.yml", line 10, column 7
    expected , but found '?'
    in "./docker-compose.yml", line 11, column 7
    Can you help please?

    • @ToddOlthoff
      @ToddOlthoff  6 років тому

      Looks like there are a couple of errors in the .yml file on line 10 and 11. It is looking for those block ends as shown instead of a question mark. Look for the errors as mentioned in the .yml file and make the changes and it should run ok.

    But the sharing services aren't going to be removed , right?

    • @ToddOlthoff
      @ToddOlthoff  6 років тому +1

      If you mean file sharing, that is included in the OS now so that is still available. The calendar, contacts, etc is not there but you could use iCloud. If you don't want iCloud then you could use something like this instead.

      One of the caveats to Linux (and this is from someone who uses Linux exclusively) is that sometimes there's some drama and projects fork, as with OpenOffice/LibreOffice, and the forked version becomes better for one reason or another (more features, better security, or otherwise a better foundation/etc).
      But yeah, awesome video resources for people who learn from audio/visual! :)
